If your DISH remote will not change the TV volume, start with fresh batteries and the correct device mode, then check whether the remote is programmed for the TV and assigned to the right sound device. The button sequence and any receiver menu depend on your remote and receiver model, so use the instructions for that exact equipment.
1. Check the batteries
Make sure the remote has batteries, that they are seated in the correct direction, and that they are not weak or dead. DISH’s remote troubleshooting guide specifies fresh AAA-size batteries when batteries are missing or dead.

2. Select the right mode and aim at the device
For direct television control, select TV mode. Select SAT when operating the DISH receiver. DISH’s guide says to point the remote at the device with a clear line of sight; it describes infrared signals as traveling less than 40 feet and not passing through walls or other solid objects. This is guidance from DISH, not a universal range guarantee for every remote.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Program the remote for the TV
If the MUTE and VOLUME buttons do nothing, DISH’s remote user guide directs users to program the remote to control the TV. Follow the setup instructions for your specific remote model rather than trying a button sequence from a different generation. Once setup is complete, test volume in the mode specified by that model’s instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- This Remote is compatible with the Hopper family of Recievers, including the Joey and the Wally. Internet connectivity required for full search functionality.
- Just say what’s on your mind to browse your channel guide, recorded programs, and On Demand shows with just a quick search.
- Backlit Keys: Your keypad illuminates automatically whenever you pick up your remote in a dark setting.
- Personalization: Program hot keys to launch an App, record shows, turn on closed captioning, and more.
- Remote Locator: Simply push a button on your DVR and your remote will beep and blink to help you find it.
4. Make sure volume is assigned to the device that produces the sound
Your sound may come from the TV or from a separate audio receiver or amplifier. DISH guidance describes assigning volume control to either target; if the remote is set to the audio system but you expect the TV’s volume buttons to respond, use the model-specific procedure to assign control to the TV. The cited guide also checks TV volume adjustment in SAT mode after the assignment is changed. Refer to the exact remote’s instructions for the correct steps.
| Volume target | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| TV | The television itself produces the sound. | Program the remote for the TV and confirm TV volume responds in the mode specified by its setup guide. |
| Audio receiver or amplifier | A separate audio system produces the sound. | Check that the remote is programmed and assigned to control that device, using instructions for the exact remote. |
5. Check TV and receiver volume settings
Use the TV’s own controls or its original remote to confirm that the television is not muted and its volume is turned up. Some DISH receiver manuals also include a receiver-side choice between TV and DISH remote volume control. This menu is not available on every receiver, and its labels and path vary; check your receiver’s manual rather than assuming a universal menu location. DISH’s receiver guidance also notes checking the TV’s mute and volume state.

6. If it still does not work
- Identify the model of both the DISH remote and receiver before following another setup procedure.
- Consult current DISH support or the manual for those exact models for model-specific programming steps and receiver settings.
- Do not assume a replacement remote will work: compatibility depends on the receiver and remote, and the reviewed official guidance does not establish one replacement model for unspecified equipment.
