Move through the available inputs, pausing about two seconds between presses, until the DISH picture appears. Select the HDMI number that matches the port used by the receiver’s cable, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
DISH’s replacement-TV setup instructions recommend pressing SAT before changing the TV input. If the receiver is connected through another device, select the HDMI input used by that device instead.
Can the DISH remote’s Input button change HDMI?
It depends on the remote model and its mode. The DISH 40.0 and 52.0 quick-start guides say their Input button changes the TV input when the remote is in TV mode. On the 52.0, the Input button in SAT mode is assigned to picture-in-picture or multi-view controls, not TV input selection. See the 40.0 guide and 52.0 guide for those model-specific controls.
If you do not know which DISH remote you have, use the TV’s Input or Source control. That method avoids relying on a button whose behavior may vary by model or mode.
If the TV still shows no signal or a blank screen
First distinguish an input-selection problem from a receiver or connection problem. If the TV is showing its own menu or another device, continue cycling through inputs. If the DISH guide appears but the picture is otherwise missing, follow DISH’s troubleshooting steps:
-
Check that the TV, receiver, and any device between them are powered on.
-
Press SAT or HOME on the DISH remote, then try the TV’s Input or Source control again. Pause a few seconds between selections and check each available input.

-
If the picture does not return, unplug the primary DISH receiver for 10 seconds, reconnect it, and allow up to 10 minutes for it to reset.
These steps follow DISH’s black-screen troubleshooting guidance. For a new TV setup that remains blank after checking the connections, DISH advises contacting the TV manufacturer for setup assistance.

On supported Hopper-family setups, HDMI-CEC can let one button turn on the receiver and TV and select the correct TV input. It requires an HDMI connection and a TV that supports HDMI-CEC. The setting path DISH documents is MENU once or HOME twice, depending on the remote, then Settings → Remote Control → HDMI-CEC. Check DISH’s HDMI-CEC instructions for availability and setup details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDISH also documents Limited Mode under Settings → Remote Control. It can help prevent accidental changes to the TV input.
If the DISH remote’s TV controls do not work
Programming the remote to control the TV is separate from choosing an HDMI input. For newer DISH instructions, press HOME twice or MENU once, then go to Settings → Remote Control, select the TV under Devices, choose Pairing Wizard, and follow the on-screen prompts. DISH’s remote pairing instructions also describe a different legacy procedure for ViP receivers; use the method that matches your receiver.
