A reliable discount validator must reproduce the production promotion engine’s eligibility rules, application order, stacking policy, allocation, and rounding—not calculate a generic “expected discount.” Make every decision against a versioned cart snapshot and return a trace that explains how the final total was reached.
Why can two valid coupons produce the wrong total?
Because “apply both discounts” is not a complete calculation rule. The outcome depends on which promotions qualify, which one is applied first, what amount the next promotion sees, how savings are allocated, and when amounts are rounded. A validator that gets any of those details wrong can approve a total that checkout will never produce—or reject a price checkout would accept.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For example, on a starting amount of 100 abstract units, applying 10% off and then 5 units off yields 85. Applying 5 units off first and then 10% off yields 85.5. This arithmetic illustration is not a platform result or a measured statistic; a real platform’s currency precision and rounding policy can change minor-unit outcomes.

There is no universal stacking behavior. commercetools documents stacking and stop-after-this-discount modes for cart discounts, and applies product discounts before cart discounts, with cart discounts processed in order. Shopify documents that discount functions execute concurrently and do not know about one another; combination rules determine whether candidate discounts can combine. Your validator therefore needs to emulate a specific production engine and contract, not an abstract coupon model.

What should a validation request freeze?
Make each calculation reproducible by tying it to an immutable cart or quote snapshot and a specific promotion-rule version. If cart state changes while rules are being evaluated, the validator should not silently combine the old cart with new promotion data.
Include the inputs that can change eligibility or price
- A cart or quote identifier and version, plus stable line identifiers.
- Currency, quantities, unit prices, and any price basis that the target engine uses.
- Discount codes and the buyer, market, or other context required by the rules.
- The evaluation time or effective-time context for validity windows.
- Tax treatment when the validator is responsible for reproducing tax interaction; otherwise, define where tax calculation occurs and which amount discounts use as their base.
- The normalized promotion set and its version, including rule status, predicates, targets, priority, and supported usage constraints.
These fields are a design recommendation, not a vendor-mandated request schema. Shopify’s function model uses requested cart context, while commercetools discount rules include conditions, targets, activity, and effective-time information. Stripe’s coupon API represents a fixed amount with an integer amount and currency, and percentage-off as a percentage. Preserve the currency and the target platform’s money representation instead of silently passing amounts through binary floating-point arithmetic.
Reject mixed or stale snapshots
Return a conflict or stale-input result when the supplied cart version or promotion version is no longer the version being validated. Do not recalculate against whatever happens to be current and present that result as validation of the original request. A caller can then fetch a fresh snapshot and retry with an explicit new version.

How should the validator decide whether a rule qualifies?
Separate eligibility from arithmetic. First determine whether each candidate is usable for this request; only eligible rules enter the pricing pipeline. This makes “coupon failed” distinguishable from “coupon qualified but reduced the price by zero under the configured policy.”
- Check rule availability. Evaluate active status and whether the request’s effective time falls within the rule’s validity window.
- Check request compatibility. Verify market and currency compatibility, required discount codes, and any buyer or cart context used by the rule.
- Evaluate predicates and targets. Match the conditions against the supplied cart and identify the eligible lines or order amount.
- Apply supported usage constraints. Check redemption or usage limits when those constraints are part of the target engine’s contract and available to the validator.
- Record a decision. Preserve the eligible base and a machine-readable reason for every rule that does not proceed.
Reason codes such as inactive, outside_validity_window, currency_mismatch, predicate_not_satisfied, and blocked_by_stacking_policy are useful proposed API values, not standardized vendor error codes. Document their meanings and keep them stable for clients.
How should discounts be ordered and combined?
Represent the application pipeline explicitly. Do not let database row order, map iteration, or incidental execution order choose a customer’s final price. Define, for the target engine, the stages and tie-breakers that govern which eligible rule applies first and whether later rules can still apply.

Specify a deterministic policy
- Scope: identify whether a rule targets a line, an order, shipping, or another supported amount.
- Priority and ties: define the ordering field and a stable tie-breaker when priorities match.
- Stacking: state whether matching discounts combine, stop after a successful discount, or follow another documented engine policy.
- Best-deal selection: say whether the engine evaluates alternatives and chooses a best result; do not assume it does.
- Stage boundaries: specify whether line or product discounts run before order/cart discounts and how later stages see the adjusted amounts.
- Allocation: define how an order-level discount is distributed when the engine exposes line-level results.
The vendor examples show why these are contract details. commercetools documents product discounts before cart discounts and ordering among cart discounts. Shopify’s functions can execute concurrently, with combination rules governing whether candidate savings combine. A validator must implement the selected engine’s documented behavior rather than infer a sequence from rule creation time.

How should arithmetic and rounding work?
Use integer minor units or a decimal representation that matches the currency and production platform. Keep currency attached to every amount. Specify percentage precision, intermediate precision, rounding mode, rounding stage, allocation method, and any cap or zero floor. The correct choices are platform- and currency-specific; there is no single rounding policy established for every engine.
Round at the same stage as checkout
Do not calculate all discounts at extended precision and round only the final total unless the production engine does exactly that. commercetools documents that its cart rounding mode is applied after each discount calculation. Consequently, each step can change the base used in the next step. Preserve the intermediate amount and rounding decision in the calculation trace.

Cap discounts and preserve valid totals
Define what happens if a fixed discount exceeds its eligible subtotal, and whether a maximum discount cap applies before or after allocation. Enforce the target engine’s floor and cap behavior rather than allowing a negative line or order total by accident. For mixed line eligibility, calculate against the eligible base—not the entire cart—if that is what the engine’s rule specifies.
Make allocation a first-class operation
An order-level saving may need to be apportioned across eligible lines for reporting, returns, or tax interaction. commercetools documents proportional, even, and individual distribution examples. Record the selected method and resulting per-line portions; do not assume that two engines allocate an identical order-level amount the same way.

What should the API return to make a result explainable?
Return enough information for a caller to display a result and for an engineer to reproduce a mismatch. A total alone is not a useful validation response when the question is which rule, base, order, or rounding decision caused it.

In a real response, the currency, precision, rounding description, and amount fields must reflect the target platform’s actual contract; the example values and identifiers are illustrative. Include, as applicable, normalized input versions, ordered rule decisions, each rule’s eligible base and calculated saving, allocations, intermediate totals, final total, rejected-rule reasons, and a trace or audit identifier. commercetools exposes discounted amounts and portions; Shopify functions consume requested context and return ordered discount operations. The exact response fields above are design choices, not requirements imposed by either platform.
Which tests catch stacking and coupon-math regressions?
Build a fixed regression suite from known cart snapshots and rule versions, then add generated or property-based combinations. Run it against the validator and compare results with the exact production engine behavior for the version you target.
- Two percentage discounts in each possible order.
- A percentage discount combined with a fixed-amount discount, with priority reversed.
- Line-level and order-level discounts applied together.
- Stacking allowed versus stop-after-success behavior.
- A maximum discount cap and a discount larger than its eligible subtotal.
- Currency-specific fixed amounts and requests with incompatible currencies.
- Eligibility exactly at the start and end of a validity window, plus immediately outside each boundary.
- Inactive, expired, and predicate-failing rules.
- Multiple eligible lines under proportional, even, and individual allocation policies.
- Values at half-minor-unit and other rounding boundaries.
- Quantity changes and partial line eligibility.
- Repeated calculation of an identical versioned input, which must produce the same output.
For each case, assert not only the final total but also rule order, eligibility decisions, allocation, intermediate amounts, and rejection reasons. A property-based test can also check invariants that are part of your contract—for example, that the same immutable input produces the same trace and total. Do not assert that discounts always reduce the total by a particular amount unless that expectation follows from the engine’s defined rules.
How should a team handle a checkout mismatch?
- Capture the exact cart snapshot, rule-set version, effective-time context, and currency used for the validation.
- Compare the validator’s eligibility decisions with the production engine’s decisions before comparing arithmetic.
- Inspect the applied rule sequence, eligible bases, allocation, and rounding after each step.
- Check whether the production calculation used a different cart or promotion version, context, or combination policy.
- Add the smallest reproducing case to the regression suite and update the contract or implementation only after identifying which engine behavior differs.
Keep the validator conditional on the production engine and its version. The documented examples establish that platform behavior differs, but they do not settle every vendor’s policy or jurisdiction-specific tax, currency, and legal rounding requirements. Confirm those details against the exact API and deployment contract you operate.
