Choose Discord if you want to join live conversations, find teammates, coordinate game sessions, or ask for quick back-and-forth help. Choose Reddit if you’d rather browse community posts, follow separate topics, and return to threaded discussions. The right choice depends on how you want to participate—and on how the particular game community is run.
Discord or Reddit: which fits how you play?
| What you want from the community | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Voice chat, finding a group, coordinating a session, or attending game nights | Discord | Servers support text, voice, and video conversation, which suits live coordination and rapid exchanges. Discord’s Safety Library describes these uses and also advises communities to consider whether members need real-time conversation before creating a server. |
| Browsing posts and comments, following distinct topics, or revisiting discussions | Subreddits are organized around posts and comments, with moderator tools for rules, flairs, wikis, and content management. The experience depends on each subreddit’s setup. Reddit’s moderation guide documents these tools. | |
| Both live discussion and public, organized posts | Use both, if the community supports them | Discord can serve as the live social space while Reddit hosts public submissions and threaded discussion. Each platform may have a different moderation team and set of expectations. |
This is a practical fit, not a universal quality ranking. The official materials cited here describe platform features; they do not establish which service game players prefer overall or which one consistently surfaces better answers.

How conversations and older information work
Discord: conversation first
Discord servers bring text, voice, and video conversation together. That can be useful when a question needs a few quick clarifications, when players are assembling a group, or when people want to talk while playing. A server’s channels may help separate subjects, but the usefulness of older messages depends on how that server organizes and maintains them. It would be too broad to assume Discord messages are always temporary or impossible to revisit.
Reddit: posts and threaded replies
Reddit discussions are built around submissions and comments. Subreddit rules, post flairs, wikis, and moderation choices can give recurring topics a structure that readers can return to. That does not mean every Reddit discussion is easier to find than every Discord conversation: the result depends on the specific community and its organization.

Community access and moderation matter
Discord servers may be invite-based
A Discord Community Server does not automatically become public or discoverable. People commonly join by invite; discovery is a separate feature with eligibility and opt-in requirements. Community Server tools include features such as Server Insights, Raid Protection, Rules, and Onboarding. Check that a server is genuinely associated with the game or its developers rather than assuming its name or presence makes it official. See Discord’s explanation of server types.
Subreddits vary in how they are run
Reddit’s moderator tools include community rules, post and comment moderation, AutoModerator, safety settings, moderator action logs, wikis, and discovery settings. Those tools can support organized publishing and moderation, but the moderators decide how to use them. Before relying on a subreddit for game updates or help, look at its rules, recent posts, and whether useful reference material is maintained.

Using both can mean two sets of rules
If a community runs on both platforms, do not assume the same people moderate both spaces or that the same conduct rules apply. Discord’s guidance recommends planning for separate ecosystems, clear escalation routes, and moderators with enough time and platform knowledge for their responsibilities. Check where to report a problem on each service.

Privacy and unsolicited contact
Review Discord’s DM and friend-request controls
Discord’s help documentation says that, by default, people in a shared server may be able to send you a direct message. You can disable DMs from non-friends and adjust the setting for an individual server. You can also restrict who may send friend requests. Review Discord’s blocking and privacy settings when you join if you want to limit unsolicited contact.

Do not treat Reddit public chat as a current alternative
Reddit announced in its October 7, 2025 changelog that public chat channels would be sunset by mid-November 2025. Private moderator-only channels and private group chats would remain, but Reddit said private group chats are not part of a community in the same way. So public community chat should not be a reason to choose Reddit as a current equivalent to a Discord server. Details are in Reddit’s October 2025 changelog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the specific game community before joining
- Look for recent activity: a platform is only useful if players are using its community space for the topics you care about.
- Read the rules and onboarding: confirm what belongs in each channel or subreddit and how new members are expected to participate.
- Check how help and updates are organized: see whether answers, announcements, and recurring resources are easy to identify in that community.
- Know where moderation happens: if the game uses both services, find the reporting or escalation route for each one.
- Set contact preferences: especially on Discord, decide whether shared-server members should be able to DM or friend you.
For voice chat, a microphone or headset may make live conversation more convenient, but neither is required just to follow a community; text channels and Reddit posts can be used without one.
