Before joining a public Discord server, set your own DM, message-request, friend-request and sensitive-media preferences in User Settings > Content & Social. Then assess the server’s rules, entry requirements and visible moderation practices. You control your personal settings; only the server’s owner or administrators can configure verification, Rules Screening, AutoMod and raid safeguards.
What to change in your account before joining
Discord’s menu labels and paths can vary by app version. Review the settings in your current client rather than assuming a default applies to every account.

Choose how to screen direct messages
Open User Settings > Content & Social and review the DM spam-filter controls. Discord describes options to filter DMs from non-friends, filter all DMs, or turn filtering off. Its support pages describe defaults in different contexts, so check what your app currently shows instead of relying on a universal default. Message Requests can keep unfamiliar conversations separate for review.
In Message Requests, you can inspect a sender’s profile, accept or ignore a request, or view spam requests separately. The preview hides attachments and shows links as plain text, which cannot be selected. That gives you a chance to assess a message without opening its files or following its links. Discord says requests are enabled for everyone; teen and unconfirmed accounts cannot disable them, while adults may be able to change the setting. Protections can vary by region, and a server can disable requests from its members. Keeping the request-review step is the more cautious choice if you do not want unfamiliar messages appearing in your ordinary DM list.

Set sensitive-media filtering
In User Settings > Content & Social, choose the sensitive-content filter that suits you. Discord says a blur setting applies to both historical and new media. This is a personal exposure control; it is separate from the explicit-image filter that server staff can configure.
Limit unsolicited friend requests and shared-server DMs
Review friend-request permissions before joining. Discord lets you limit requests to friends of friends and/or people in shared servers, or deselect all the listed options. Its Blocking & Privacy Settings guidance also documents controls for direct messages from people in shared servers. These settings can reduce unwanted contact from people you encounter in a public community.

How to evaluate a public server before participating
Members cannot change a server’s safety configuration, but they can inspect the rules, access model and how the community handles moderation. No single control guarantees that a server is safe.

Discord documents three join modes: Invite Only, Apply to Join and Discoverable. Applications give administrators a chance to review prospective members. Discoverable servers must meet Discord’s eligibility requirements for Community servers and can be found and joined through Server Discovery. For Community servers, Rules Screening can require new members to agree to the rules before they can talk, react or DM other members. The owner or administrators configure it, and manual verification can bypass the requirement. Read the rules regardless of whether screening appears to be active. Details are in Discord’s Rules Screening FAQ.
Understand verification levels and their friction
Discord lists five verification levels: None, Low, Medium, High and Highest. They set requirements for participating, not a guarantee that abuse will be prevented.

Discord’s Verification Levels guidance recommends Low for basic security on public servers. It says members who do not meet a server’s verification requirements cannot send text messages in server channels or join voice channels. The five-minute account-age threshold applies at Medium and above; the ten-minute time-in-server requirement applies at High and Highest. These are Discord’s operational thresholds, not evidence of a measured reduction in scams or abuse.
Look for signs of moderation and clear boundaries
Discord’s AutoMod can use built-in or custom keyword rules to block flagged content and send alerts to a moderator channel. Applicable custom rules can also time out users. Spam rules can target unsolicited spam and invite spam; a mention-spam rule can limit mentions. These tools only help if the server has configured them and moderators respond to alerts.
Discord explicitly cautions that AutoMod’s machine-learning spam filter is imperfect: “This filter is not perfect so it might not catch everything you may consider spam; for example, nonsensical words across multiple messages or ‘copy/pasta’ messages.” Treat filtering as one layer, not a substitute for judgment. If something seems suspicious, do not engage and use Discord’s reporting tools.
Discord’s raid guidance recommends safeguards including AutoMod, restricting @everyone and @here permissions to trusted roles, Raid Protection alerts, verification and explicit-media filtering. Raid Protection alerts may not be available to every server. During an active raid, staff can pause invites, enable slowmode, adjust AutoMod or temporarily raise verification. These are moderator actions, not settings a member can turn on.
A practical way to compare two communities
Use these questions to decide whether a server’s setup and culture fit your needs. They are a way to organize what you can observe, not a score or safety guarantee.

- Access: Is it invite-only, application-based or discoverable? Are verification requirements clear, and are you comfortable with the participation delay or phone requirement?
- Contact and visibility: Are rules screened before participation? Are the rules clear about DMs, mentions, media and member conduct?
- Moderation: Does the server describe its moderation process or show signs of configured safeguards? Is there a clear way to report a problem?
- Fit: Do the stated rules and content boundaries match what you want from the community?
If someone contacts you after you join
- Do not rush to accept a request. Review the profile and preview the message in Message Requests. Keep in mind that previews hide attachments and render links as plain text.
- Use your account controls. Ignore or block unwanted contacts, and revisit your shared-server DM and friend-request permissions if contact continues.
- Report suspicious behavior. Filters can miss spam, so report it through Discord rather than relying on server automation alone.
