Discord YouTube previews are the thumbnail cards that appear when you paste a YouTube link—usually showing the title and a playable preview. When they stop showing up, it’s rarely “your link is broken”; it’s more often Discord settings, client cache, or embed/unfurl being blocked.
This certified fix guide walks you through the full troubleshooting path for Discord not showing YouTube preview across Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android, and Discord Web—ending with advanced cache and permission checks.

What the YouTube preview is (and what it depends on)
Discord doesn’t embed YouTube by “scraping” the page in real time. Instead, it relies on its link preview system (historically called “unfurl” / embeds) to fetch metadata from the URL and render a card inside your message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Discord can’t retrieve usable metadata for the pasted link, the preview falls back to plain text—meaning the link is still clickable, but you won’t see the thumbnail card.

Common reasons Discord won’t show a YouTube preview
- Link formatting issues: extra tracking parameters, missing https, shortened links that don’t resolve cleanly, or copy/paste artifacts.
- Discord client glitch: corrupted cache, outdated app build, or a failed metadata fetch.
- Permission or channel restrictions: server admins can disable certain embed behaviors; some bots/tools also modify link behavior.
- Blocked outgoing connections: firewall, VPN, DNS filtering, proxy apps, or privacy tools can block the metadata request.
- Browser/app differences: Discord’s web client and mobile clients handle previews slightly differently.
- Video metadata isn’t accessible: age-restricted content, regional availability, private/unlisted videos, or YouTube pages that return metadata in a way Discord can’t parse.
Pre-flight checklist (fast, usually fixes it)
Before changing anything, do these quick checks. They resolve the majority of preview failures.
- Paste the link into Discord as plain text (no extra text around it) and press Enter/Send.
- Use the canonical YouTube watch URL format:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID. - Remove URL tracking parameters temporarily. If your link has
&si=,&utm_, or long redirect segments, replace it with a clean watch URL. - Try one known-public video from a channel you trust (not a private/unlisted video).
- Check whether other people in the same channel can see previews when they paste the same link.
- Try a different channel (preferably one without bots or custom moderation).
If previews work in one channel but not another, focus on channel permissions and bot moderation. If previews fail everywhere on your device/account, focus on client settings and cache.
Fix on Desktop (Windows/macOS)
Use these steps in order. If you’re on the Discord desktop app, the cache reset is often the real fix.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm you’re on a recent Discord build. Open Discord and check for updates. On desktop, Discord typically updates automatically, but you may need to fully restart it after an update.
- Hard restart Discord. Completely close Discord, then reopen it.
- Try with a clean copy/paste. Copy the watch URL directly from the address bar (not from a share button that includes extra tracking).
- Disable VPN/proxy temporarily. If you use a VPN, turn it off and try posting again.
- Check firewall/DNS filtering. If you use security software that blocks outbound requests, temporarily allow Discord.
- Clear Discord cache. Close Discord completely, then remove cache folders:
- Windows: open
%appdata%\discord(in File Explorer address bar) and delete the Cache folder. - macOS: in Finder choose Go > Go to Folder, enter
~/Library/Application Support/discord, then delete the Cache folder.
- Windows: open
- Re-test after relaunch. Restart Discord and post the same clean YouTube watch link.
- Log out and back in. If cache clearing didn’t help, sign out of Discord and sign back in.
- Reinstall as a last resort. Uninstall Discord, reboot, reinstall the latest version from the official site, and test again.
Fix on Mobile (Android/iPhone)
Mobile uses a different client stack, so cache issues or embed throttling can behave differently than desktop.
- Force close and reopen the app. Fully close Discord from the recent apps switcher, then relaunch.
- Update Discord. Install the newest version from the App Store / Google Play and retry.
- Try on cellular vs Wi‑Fi. Switch networks to see if your connection is blocking metadata requests.
- Disable VPN/private DNS temporarily. Settings like Private DNS (Android) or VPN apps can break preview fetching.
- Restart your phone. Sounds basic, but it flushes stuck network sessions.
- Android: clear app cache. Go to Settings > Apps > Discord > Storage > Clear Cache (do not clear data unless you’re okay re-logging in).
- iPhone: reinstall Discord. iOS doesn’t provide the same “clear cache” control, so reinstalling is the clean reset.
- Test with a known-public video. Post a clean
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_IDlink you know is public.
Fix on Web (Browser)
If Discord desktop/mobile won’t show previews, Web can confirm whether the problem is client-side (your app) or account/server-side.
- Open Discord in an incognito/private window. This disables most extensions that can block requests.
- Disable ad blockers and privacy extensions. Temporarily turn off uBlock Origin, AdGuard, Brave shields adjustments, or similar tools.
- Try a different browser. Test in Chrome, then Firefox or Edge (whichever you don’t normally use).
- Clear site data for discord.com. Clear cookies/cache for Discord Web only.
- Confirm popups aren’t blocked. Some embed flows can be impacted by strict browser settings.
- Turn off VPN/proxy for the browser. If you use one system-wide, disable it and retest.
- Copy a clean watch URL. Paste only the URL and send. Avoid surrounding formatting.
Advanced fixes when previews still won’t appear
If none of the basic steps worked, use these targeted checks. They address the less-obvious causes: server restrictions, bot interference, and network blocks.
1) Verify server/channel embed permissions
In many servers, admins control whether embeds are allowed. If you can see other embeds (Twitter/X, Spotify, GitHub previews) but not YouTube, it may be YouTube-specific metadata failing—or a rule affecting link previews.

- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
- Ask another member to paste the exact same YouTube link in the same channel.
- If their preview shows and yours doesn’t, try logging out/in and clearing cache.
- If nobody gets the preview in that channel, contact a server admin about embed/unfurl restrictions.
2) Check whether bots are stripping links or embeds
Some moderation or anti-link bots can convert rich previews into plain links. If previews work in another channel that doesn’t use the bot, you’ve found the culprit.
- Test in a channel with minimal bot activity (like a general chat without automod tools).
- If you have server roles/admin access, review the bot’s configuration for embed/link handling.
3) Inspect your link for redirects and tracking
Discord generally prefers straightforward YouTube watch URLs. If your share link is a redirect (common on mobile apps), replace it with the canonical URL.
Example of a clean link format:
| Use this | Avoid this (often breaks previews) |
|---|---|
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID |
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&feature=share (sometimes okay, sometimes not) |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID |
https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID?si=... (may work, but try canonical first) |
4) Check network blocking (VPN, DNS, proxy, firewall)
Preview metadata requires outbound requests. If your connection blocks requests to Discord’s metadata/unfurl services, you’ll only see plain text links.
- Turn off VPN and try again.
- Switch DNS (for advanced users) to a standard resolver like Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS and retest.
- Temporarily disable strict security tools.
5) Reconnect your Discord session
Sometimes the account session for preview rendering gets stuck. A full logout/login and restart can restore normal behavior.

- Logout from Discord, close the app/browser completely, reopen, and log in again.
- Then retry the same clean YouTube URL.
Special cases: Shorts, playlists, age-restricted videos, and region blocks
Not all YouTube pages produce the same metadata. If previews work for one type of link but not another, the issue may be the content type or accessibility.
YouTube Shorts links
Shorts often come in these formats:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_IDhttps://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID(sometimes resolves to Shorts)
If Shorts don’t preview, try converting it to a watch URL (if available) or test with a non-Shorts video from the same channel.
Playlists and channels
Discord previews are most reliable for watch pages. Playlists and channel pages may show differently or not show thumbnails depending on the metadata Discord can fetch.

When debugging, prioritize a direct watch link: /watch?v=VIDEO_ID.
Age-restricted or region-restricted videos
If a video is age-restricted, unlisted, or only available in certain regions, Discord’s metadata fetch may fail. Use a known-public, widely accessible video to confirm your setup.
Private/unlisted videos
Unlisted/private videos often won’t return metadata in a way that produces an embed preview for everyone. Your link may still open in your browser because you’re authenticated, but Discord’s preview may not.
How to confirm the preview is working (testing routine)
You want a repeatable test so you can tell whether the fix actually worked.
- Pick one public video and copy the clean watch URL from the address bar.
- Paste it into Discord in the same channel where it previously failed.
- Observe whether the thumbnail card appears within a second or two after sending.
- Repeat in a different channel to rule out channel-specific restrictions.
- Repeat on another platform (e.g., desktop after mobile) if you still don’t see previews.
If you see previews in one platform but not another, don’t assume the link is wrong—assume the client/network path for that platform is the problem.
Comparison: embeds vs previews vs link unfurl
Discord can render rich content in multiple ways. For YouTube, the most visible behavior is link unfurl/preview rendering.
- Link preview card: thumbnail + title, usually triggered automatically when you paste a full URL.
- Embeds: richer structured previews that some services support; may be controlled by permissions or bot rules.
- Plain text: occurs when Discord can’t fetch metadata or unfurl is disabled.
If previews are missing only for YouTube, it’s usually metadata fetch or content-type differences. If previews are missing for everything, it’s usually client settings, cache, or network blocking.

FAQ
Why does Discord show YouTube links as plain text for me?
Most often, Discord can’t fetch preview metadata for that link due to URL formatting, client cache issues, network blocking (VPN/DNS/firewall), or channel/server restrictions. Use a clean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID link and test in another channel or on another platform.
Does it mean YouTube is down?
No. If one public YouTube link previews for other people (or in another channel), YouTube isn’t generally the root cause. It’s almost always Discord unfurl/metadata access, not YouTube playback.
Can I force the preview to show?
You can influence it by pasting a canonical watch URL and removing tracking/redirect parameters. There’s no reliable “force preview” button for users; the preview appears when Discord’s metadata request succeeds.
Do Discord Nitro settings affect YouTube previews?
Nitro doesn’t typically control unfurl metadata behavior for YouTube previews. If other link previews work while YouTube doesn’t, focus on URL format and client cache/network.
Will clearing cache delete my Discord data?
Clearing cache removes local cached files. It shouldn’t delete your messages, but it may require you to log back in depending on your session state.
Final Thoughts
When Discord not showing YouTube preview, the fastest reliable path is: use a clean canonical watch URL, test in another channel, then clear Discord cache (desktop) or clear app cache/reinstall (mobile). If it still fails, rule out network blockers like VPN/private DNS and check for channel/bot restrictions.
