1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no Discord-certified minimum for CPU or RAM. A small command bot may run comfortably on the smallest always-on plan that leaves measured headroom, while a bot handling media, image processing, databases, machine-learning work, or thousands of guilds needs substantially more capacity. Size the host from your bot’s peak CPU and resident memory under representative traffic, then reserve capacity for garbage collection, reconnects, scheduled jobs, deployments, and co-located services.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Keeping a bot online is an architecture problem as much as a hardware decision. Discord’s Gateway is a persistent, stateful WebSocket connection, so the host must run a long-lived process, reconnect cleanly after interruptions, restart after crashes, and expose enough monitoring to detect failures. A provider’s advertised uptime is not a guarantee that your bot will remain connected.

Discord publishes protocol limits and connection behavior, not a hardware table. The resources a bot consumes depend on several variables that can change independently:
- Runtime and language: The interpreter, libraries, garbage collector, native extensions, and number of worker processes affect both baseline memory and CPU.
- Command complexity: Simple slash-command responses are very different from permission evaluation, searches, recommendation logic, or large embed construction.
- Event volume: A bot in many active guilds receives more messages, reactions, member changes, interactions, and scheduled work than one serving a quiet test server.
- Cache policy: Keeping guild, member, message, or application data in memory increases response speed but raises resident memory. An unbounded cache can turn a modest bot into an out-of-memory failure.
- External services: Database queries, HTTP APIs, queues, image manipulation, audio/video processing, and machine-learning inference add CPU, memory, network, or storage demand.
- Co-located processes: A database, dashboard, worker, reverse proxy, or monitoring agent competes with the Gateway process for the same resources.
Consequently, a statement such as “every Discord bot needs 1 GB of RAM” is not an official requirement. The defensible method is to measure the actual application and choose a plan with operational headroom.

Measure first, then choose a plan
Use a production-like test rather than the idle process shown immediately after installation. The following sequence produces a sizing decision you can defend:
- Deploy the exact build you intend to run. Include production dependencies, environment variables, cache settings, database drivers, scheduled tasks, and logging. Development mode often has different memory behavior.
- Generate representative activity. Exercise every important command, interaction, permission path, scheduled job, and external API. Include the busiest guilds and realistic bursts rather than only a quiet test server.
- Record resident memory by process. Capture the Gateway process, workers, database, and other services separately. Record startup, steady-state, and post-burst values so a temporary spike is not mistaken for the baseline.
- Record CPU over time. Look at sustained utilization and short peaks on the actual vCPU allocation. A process that averages low usage but repeatedly saturates a shared or burstable CPU can still miss interaction deadlines.
- Track event and request rates. Count Gateway events, HTTP requests, database operations, queue depth, and failed or retried jobs. Rate-limit pressure can look like a CPU problem when the real issue is backoff behavior.
- Test failure and recovery. Restart the process, revoke and restore network access, recycle the host, and force a Gateway disconnect. Measure reconnection time, duplicate work, lost jobs, and memory after recovery.
- Select the smallest plan with clear headroom. Compare the observed peak, not the idle average, with the provider’s guaranteed RAM and CPU allocation. Leave room for garbage collection, deploys, reconnects, log rotation, and a temporary workload spike.
Repeat the measurement after major feature releases or a rapid increase in guilds. Resource use is a moving property of the workload, not a permanent label attached to the bot’s code.

How CPU affects a Discord bot
Gateway and command responsiveness
The Gateway connection must parse events, dispatch handlers, run permission checks, and send responses. CPU starvation delays heartbeats, event handling, and interaction replies. Predictable CPU is usually more useful than a higher advertised burst ceiling when the bot performs steady work throughout the day.
Bursty jobs and media processing
Image conversion, audio transcoding, video work, and inference can consume an entire core for short periods or remain busy for minutes. Run those jobs in a worker process or queue when possible, so a burst does not block the Gateway process. Measure worker CPU independently; an average across all processes can hide a saturated worker or an underpowered Gateway process.
Shared, burstable, and dedicated CPU
Shared or credit-based instances may be adequate for an inexpensive light bot, but their effective performance can change when neighbors are busy or credits run out. A moderate or heavy bot benefits from an allocation whose performance and limits are explicit. Check how the host defines vCPU, throttling, CPU credits, and sustained-use limits rather than comparing core counts alone.

How RAM affects a Discord bot
Runtime, cache, and database overhead
Resident memory includes the language runtime, loaded libraries, object graphs, connection pools, caches, buffers, and temporary allocations. If a database or queue runs on the same machine, its working set must be added to the bot’s peak rather than treated as free capacity.
Garbage collection and spikes
Garbage-collected runtimes may retain memory for reuse even after objects are released. A bot can therefore show a high steady resident set without a leak, while a real leak appears as continual growth across identical workloads. Observe memory after repeated command bursts, scheduled jobs, and reconnects. A plan that barely fits the normal working set leaves no safe space for collection cycles, deploys, or a malformed event burst.
What happens when RAM runs out
Once the operating system starts reclaiming aggressively or swapping, response latency rises and Gateway heartbeats can be delayed. An out-of-memory kill can terminate the bot without an application-level error. Configure alerts before this point, cap unbounded caches, and keep backups of state that cannot be reconstructed from Discord.

Discord limits that influence capacity planning
| Area | Documented guidance | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway events | Discord’s Gateway documentation (2026) says an app can send 120 Gateway events per connection every 60 seconds, an average of two commands per second. | Count identify, resume, presence, and other Gateway sends per connection. A reconnect strategy must respect the limit instead of retrying in a tight loop. |
| HTTP API | Discord’s rate-limit documentation (2026) states that all bots can make up to 50 API requests per second; limits vary by route and can change. | Parse response headers and honor retry_after. Do not hard-code 50 requests per second as a universal per-route allowance. |
| Sharding | Discord Developer Support guidance for 2025–2026 recommends planning for sharding near 2,000 guilds, requires it at 2,500 or more, and suggests about one shard per 1,000 guilds for best performance. | Begin design and load testing before the requirement arrives. Shards add processes, coordination, monitoring, and deployment concerns; they are not merely a larger RAM setting. |
| Privileged intents | Current Discord guidance bases review on unique users. Apps above 10,000 users must apply for privileged-intent access and reapply annually to continue access. | Track unique users and the intents your features actually need. Approval and continued access are separate from hosting capacity. |
What “24/7 uptime” requires
A bot stays available when the complete service, not just the virtual machine, is designed for interruption. Confirm each item before choosing a host:
- Long-running execution: The plan must not sleep, stop background processes, or shut down work after an HTTP request ends.
- Supervision: Use a process supervisor or container restart policy that starts the bot on boot and restarts it after a crash.
- Controlled reconnects: Implement exponential backoff, Gateway resume where supported, and protection against multiple workers connecting with the same identity unintentionally.
- Health checks: Check process liveness and useful readiness signals, such as a successful Gateway session or a recent event timestamp. A process can be running while disconnected.
- Logs and alerts: Retain startup, shutdown, rate-limit, exception, reconnect, and out-of-memory events. Alert on process death, repeated reconnects, rising latency, and exhausted disk or memory.
- Backups: Back up databases, queues, configuration, and encryption keys according to their recovery needs. Store secrets outside source control and rotate them if exposed.
- Network suitability: Choose a region and network path appropriate for your users and external APIs. Lower latency helps interactive commands, but reliability and route quality matter as much as geography.
- Maintenance handling: Know the provider’s maintenance notices, reboot behavior, recovery process, and support response time. Schedule rolling or graceful deployments so one update does not create unnecessary downtime.
Discord documents protocol behavior, but it does not guarantee the uptime of a third-party host. Provider SLA percentages, RAM caps, CPU allocation, bandwidth, backups, and support commitments are separate commercial terms that must be read individually.
Hosting approaches compared
| Approach | Strengths | Trade-offs and checks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed VPS | Control over runtime, supervisor, networking, logs, and deployment tooling; easy to add workers or a database | You handle patching, firewalling, backups, monitoring, incident response, and capacity changes. Verify guaranteed RAM, CPU policy, disk, and recovery options. | Operators who need control and can maintain a Linux service continuously |
| Managed application or bot hosting | Less setup, integrated deployments, and often built-in logs or restart controls | Check whether background processes remain active, which runtimes and worker models are supported, memory and CPU limits, deployment behavior, outbound networking, and backup responsibility. | Teams that value reduced operations work and can work within the platform’s limits |
| Private physical machine | Direct control of hardware and local services | Power, connectivity, hardware failure, physical security, redundancy, and remote recovery become your responsibility. This is a self-hosting decision rather than a universal Discord requirement. | A specific self-hosted environment with reliable power, network, and recovery procedures |
Compare total monthly cost, not the headline instance price. Include backups, monitoring, extra storage, database service, bandwidth, operational time, and the cost of an outage.
A deployment pattern that protects the Gateway process
- Keep the Gateway service focused. Put command dispatch, interaction acknowledgement, and session management in one clearly monitored process.
- Queue expensive work. Send image, media, inference, and long database jobs to workers. Return an acknowledgement promptly, then report completion through a controlled result path.
- Make jobs idempotent. A reconnect or worker restart can cause a retry. Store a job identifier and status so the same action is not charged, posted, or processed twice.
- Persist essential state. Keep configuration, user preferences, moderation records, and job state in a backed-up datastore rather than only in process memory.
- Automate startup and shutdown. Use a supervisor or container policy, graceful signal handling, and a deployment procedure that drains workers before replacing them.
- Instrument before scaling. Expose per-process CPU, resident memory, event rate, API responses, queue depth, command latency, reconnect count, and restart count. Set alerts based on trends and failure conditions.
- Test restoration. Confirm that a fresh host can receive secrets, restore a backup, start the service, reconnect to Discord, and resume queued work without manual guesswork.
Troubleshooting common hosting failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Useful corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Bot appears online but commands time out | CPU saturation, blocked event loop, slow database, or a worker monopolizing the Gateway process | Inspect per-process CPU and command latency; move expensive work to a worker and optimize or pool database operations. |
| Frequent disconnects and reconnects | Host restarts, network instability, missed heartbeats, rate-limit violations, or insufficient CPU during bursts | Review restart and Gateway logs, implement backoff and resume handling, and compare heartbeat timing with CPU and network graphs. |
| Memory rises after every job | Unbounded cache, retained references, queued results, or a library leak | Capture resident memory across identical runs, bound caches and queues, update the affected dependency, and isolate the leaking worker. |
| Bot dies during deployments | No graceful shutdown, overlapping identities, or a deployment that replaces all workers at once | Drain workers, stop cleanly, start one verified instance, and use rolling replacement where multiple processes or shards exist. |
| Requests receive rate-limit responses | Route-specific limits, bursty retries, or ignoring response headers | Parse headers, honor retry_after, centralize request scheduling, and remove blind retry loops. |
| Recovery loses moderation or job data | State existed only in memory or backups were never tested | Persist critical state, back it up, protect secrets, and perform a documented restore test. |
Pre-purchase and pre-launch checklist
- Peak resident memory and CPU are measured with production-like traffic.
- The plan’s guaranteed RAM, vCPU policy, storage, bandwidth, and throttling rules are written down.
- The host permits a persistent background process and supplies startup and restart controls.
- Health checks distinguish a running process from a connected, responsive bot.
- Logs and alerts cover crashes, memory exhaustion, reconnect loops, rate limits, disk, and latency.
- Database, configuration, and secrets have an ownership and backup plan.
- The region and network path suit users and external APIs.
- Worker separation, shard coordination, and rolling deployment are designed before the workload requires them.
- The provider’s maintenance policy, recovery process, SLA scope, and support expectations are understood.
The right host is therefore the smallest reliable environment that passes these checks with room for the bot’s measured peak and its operational events. Re-measure after substantial feature, cache, guild-count, or traffic changes; move to more predictable CPU, more RAM, separate workers, or sharding when the observed workload—not a generic minimum—demands it.
