What “force wipe” means in Rust
In Rust, “force wipe” normally means the map reset associated with the game’s regular update cycle. The old procedural world is replaced, and the persistent map state that players created on it is cleared. Everyone begins building, farming resources and claiming territory on a new world.

The word “force” distinguishes this event from an owner’s routine wipe. A server administrator can wipe a map on a weekly, biweekly or custom timetable, even when the next game-wide update is still weeks away. That extra wipe is controlled by the server rather than forced by Facepunch’s update schedule.
Players also use “wipe” as shorthand for two different resets. A map wipe resets the world and construction on it. A blueprint wipe resets researched crafting progression. Those resets can happen together, but they are not the same operation.

When is the Rust force wipe?
Facepunch’s standard Server Wipe Timer documents a monthly wipe on the first Thursday at 19:00 in the London time zone. That is the reference schedule for the regular branch, but it is not a promise that every server will wipe at that exact moment. Server owners can select another cadence, time zone or override.

“19:00 London time” means the local clock in the configured London time zone. Your local conversion can change during daylight-saving periods, so use the server’s displayed countdown or published calendar rather than assuming the same wall-clock hour everywhere. Facepunch or an operator can also change update timing, making an exact calendar date less permanent than the cadence itself.
How server owners change the wipe schedule
The official timer exposes separate settings for the day, hour and time zone. An administrator can configure wipeDayofWeek, wipeHourofDay and wipeTimezone for a recurring schedule. The exact configuration interface depends on the server host or management tool, but the settings express the same three decisions: which day, which hour and which zone.
For a schedule that does not fit monthly, weekly or biweekly patterns, an owner can use a cron expression. A cron rule is useful for a specific weekday pattern or a repeating interval that the standard modes cannot represent. The operator, not the player, is responsible for checking that the expression resolves to the intended dates.
The timer also supports wipeUnixTimestampOverride. This lets an operator specify one exact wipe instant as a Unix timestamp. It is appropriate for a planned event, a delayed update or a one-off reset, but it can make a server’s next wipe differ from its normal recurring schedule.

- Identify the policy. Decide whether the server should wipe monthly, weekly, biweekly or on a custom calendar.
- Set the recurring values. Apply
wipeDayofWeek,wipeHourofDayandwipeTimezonewhen using the standard timer. - Use an override only when needed. Enter a cron expression or
wipeUnixTimestampOverridefor an exception or exact timestamp. - Publish the result. Put the next wipe time and whether blueprints are included in the server description, community channel or website.
- Verify after an update. Check the actual in-game countdown and logs; an update delay or override can move the event from the expected calendar date.
These controls explain why two servers can advertise different “wipe days” while both follow the broader Rust update cycle. One may retain the monthly default, another may run weekly, and a third may use a custom timestamp.

What a map wipe removes
A map wipe generates a fresh world and removes the player-created state attached to the old one. In practical terms, players lose the bases, storage layouts, deployables and other construction that defined the previous map. The old territorial landscape no longer exists, so monuments, routes and resource access must be learned again on the new world.
- World state: the existing procedural map is replaced by a new map state.
- Player construction: bases, building pieces and player-placed structures on the old map disappear.
- Deployables: placed objects associated with the old settlement are removed with that map state.
- Territory and routes: control of locations, travel paths and resource spots starts over.
A server’s announcement should define any additional data it resets. “Map wipe” by itself establishes that the world and its construction are cleared; it does not automatically tell you whether researched blueprints or other progression is also reset.
What a blueprint wipe removes
A blueprint wipe clears researched crafting knowledge. After it, players must research recipes again instead of immediately crafting everything they had unlocked on the previous cycle. The map may be brand new while blueprints remain intact, or both may be reset in the same event.
Facepunch explained the gameplay reason in its official “Pivot Or Die” update on 6 November 2025: “When you join a freshly map-wiped server but already have everything unlocked, you’re effectively skipping the entire early and mid-game.” The same announcement said Facepunch had wiped all servers and blueprints, reduced tech-tree and research costs, and was evaluating the result. It also stated: “We’re not committing to anything yet.” That wording is important: the announcement did not establish a permanent monthly blueprint-wipe rule.

Therefore, never infer a blueprint reset solely from the phrase “force wipe.” Confirm whether the server advertises a map-only wipe or a full wipe that includes blueprints.
Do Rust servers wipe every month?
No. Monthly is Facepunch’s documented default timer, not a universal requirement for every server. Community and modded servers can wipe weekly, biweekly or according to a custom schedule. Some owners choose frequent wipes to keep competition intense and bases small; others keep a monthly or longer cycle so players have time to build larger projects.
The server’s own policy is decisive. A monthly server can still perform an emergency or mid-cycle wipe, while a weekly server can keep blueprints between map resets. The game’s broad update rhythm and the server’s local administration are related but separate.
How to check a server before joining
Use the following checklist before investing time in a server:

- Check the reset scope: determine whether the notice says map-only or map plus blueprints.
- Confirm the time zone: a listed hour is incomplete without the zone used by the operator.
- Read the next-wipe notice: a countdown, calendar or exact timestamp is more reliable than an old server title.
- Check the administration type: official, community and modded servers can apply different rules.
- Look for exceptions: owners may announce an emergency wipe, delayed update or one-time timestamp override.
Server titles and descriptions can become outdated. If the information conflicts, check the owner’s current community announcement or countdown and ask whether blueprints are retained.

Why the wipe changes the way Rust is played
A wipe synchronizes a large portion of the server’s population at the same starting point. Established groups lose their locations, newcomers are not immediately surrounded by finished compounds, and early resource routes become valuable again. Competition is usually highest near the reset because many players are gathering, building and contesting the same objectives at once.
The length of the cycle changes the strategy. On a weekly server, a compact base and rapid progression may be sensible because the map will be replaced soon. On a monthly server, groups can justify more elaborate defenses and longer-term projects. A blueprint wipe intensifies the early game further because crafting progression must be rebuilt rather than carried into the new map.

What staging wipes are for
Facepunch’s staging branch is an advance-testing environment rather than the ordinary live-server schedule. Its documentation states: “Staging map wipes occur one week prior to regular Rust.” A staging wipe can therefore provide an early look at a fresh map cycle, but it does not mean that every live community server will wipe at that same time.
Players using staging should treat its wipe as a test-cycle event. Live-server owners may have their own weekly, biweekly or custom timing, and the regular branch can be affected by update scheduling.
Common wipe misunderstandings and fixes
The map is new, but all recipes are unlocked
This is normally a map-only wipe. The owner regenerated the world without clearing researched blueprints. Check the server policy before assuming a bug.
The server did not wipe on the first Thursday
It may be using weekly, biweekly or custom settings, a different time zone, or a Unix-timestamp override. Read the advertised countdown and ask for the configured next-wipe time.

Two servers show different wipe days
That is expected when operators choose different timer modes or override the default. Compare cadence, time zone and reset scope rather than relying on the word “force.”
A staging server wiped before the live server
That follows the documented staging relationship: staging map wipes occur one week before regular Rust. Staging is intended for advance testing, not as a universal live-server calendar.
