To stop Handoff on managed Macs, create a macOS configuration policy in Microsoft Intune and set Block Handoff to Yes. Microsoft documents the setting as applying to macOS 10.15 and newer. It removes Handoff from the device. It does not, on its own, stop every way Apple devices exchange data, so the policy should be scoped and described as one control among several.
Set Block Handoff to Yes in Intune
Microsoft’s device restrictions reference defines Block Handoff as a macOS setting in which “Yes prevents the Handoff feature on devices.” If the setting is left at Not configured, Intune does not change it, and the operating system may continue to allow Handoff. The setting therefore has to be explicitly set to Yes in a policy assigned to the Macs you want to restrict. Source: Microsoft Learn: macOS device settings in Microsoft Intune.

Prefer the settings catalog
Microsoft recommends creating new macOS policies with the settings catalog where possible, and notes that the older Device restrictions template is no longer being updated and may later be migrated or deprecated for new policy creation. The setting is documented in the Device restrictions reference under the Cloud and storage category, but the documentation reviewed does not confirm an identical settings-catalog category path for every tenant. Configuration steps
- In the Microsoft Intune admin center, create a new macOS configuration policy and choose the settings catalog.
- In the settings picker, search for Block Handoff. If it does not appear for macOS, confirm the tenant and platform before continuing.
- Set Block Handoff to Yes and save the policy. If you must use the Device restrictions template instead, locate the setting under Cloud and storage.
- Assign the policy to a pilot group of Macs first, then widen the assignment once status reporting confirms the setting is applied.
- Review per-setting and assignment status before reporting the restriction as in effect (see the verification section below).
What users lose when Handoff is off
Apple describes Handoff as a way to start a task on one device and continue it on another, such as picking up a Safari page or a document in a supported app. Apple’s guidance lists the conditions for Handoff to work: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, the same Apple Account, devices that meet system requirements, and Handoff turned on for each device. Apple’s Handoff page notes that the feature supports many Apple apps and some third-party apps. When Block Handoff is set to Yes, a managed Mac cannot take part in Handoff. Users of that Mac lose cross-device task continuation. Apple’s user-facing control is labeled “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.” In current macOS versions it is in System Settings under General and AirDrop & Continuity. Some macOS versions and Apple support pages use the label AirDrop & Handoff, and older releases use System Preferences > General. A user should not expect the toggle to be editable on a managed Mac once the policy applies, but the documentation reviewed does not describe how the Settings pane presents the managed state, so verify that on a test device.
What Block Handoff does not cover
The title frames the goal as preventing unintended data sharing. The accurate scope is narrower. Handoff lets a user continue a task across devices, and the policy removes that feature on the managed Mac. The sources reviewed do not quantify the risk Handoff creates, do not describe it as inherently unsafe, and do not show that blocking it prevents every route by which data moves between Apple devices. Treat it as a feature restriction, not a confidentiality guarantee.

Apple documents several adjacent features separately, and the Intune documentation does not say whether Block Handoff changes them. The table below shows what is established in the reviewed material.

If the goal includes AirDrop, clipboard sharing, or iCloud sync, evaluate and configure those controls separately. Do not assume this policy covers them.

Confirm the policy is applied
Microsoft says settings catalog policies can be monitored in the Intune admin center. Per-setting status identifies devices where the setting applied successfully, conflicts with another policy, or failed, and assignment failures can be investigated from the same reporting. Use those views to support any statement that the restriction is in effect. A profile that was created or assigned is not, by itself, evidence that a Mac has the setting applied.
- Per-setting status shows the Block Handoff value as applied on the target Macs.
- No conflict is reported with another policy that sets Handoff or a related sharing setting.
- No assignment failure appears for the group that contains the test Macs.
- A test Mac running macOS 10.15 or newer has the Handoff control unavailable to the user, as described in the Apple documentation (on a test device, not as a claim made from documentation alone).
Also test with a real Handoff scenario, such as starting a Safari page on a managed Mac and attempting to continue it on a second Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account. Record the result before rolling the policy out more broadly.

The Microsoft documentation reviewed does not describe a test procedure for Block Handoff, so the steps above are a practical check, not a vendor-published one.
