Apple’s iPhone guide says the Recently Deleted and Hidden collections are locked by default; turning off the applicable authentication control changes their default to unlocked. On a device configured for Touch ID or passcode authentication, the corresponding control may be labeled Use Touch ID or Use Passcode. The available option and menu presentation can vary by device and iOS version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat changes when you turn off Use Face ID
The control applies to both Recently Deleted and Hidden. It is not a setting for Recently Deleted alone, so Hidden also becomes unlocked by default.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Show Hidden Album is a separate setting. Turning it off removes the Hidden collection from the Photos view, but it does not change the collection’s lock behavior.
Turning off Face ID does not delete or sync photos
This setting changes the collections’ default lock state; it does not permanently delete items or alter iCloud Photos synchronization. Apple says items remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days before permanent removal. During that period, you can recover them or delete them permanently. If iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting an item is reflected on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

Recover or permanently delete an item
In the current Photos workflow, open Photos > Collections > Recently Deleted, select an item, then choose whether to recover or permanently delete it. Apple’s recovery instructions describe an older interface variant in which Recently Deleted appears under Utilities and the album must be unlocked before you choose Recover.
