They are not competing technologies. Delta Lake ACID describes transaction guarantees for tables stored with Delta Lake; an Apache Spark DataFrame is a programming abstraction for working with distributed, named-column data. Databricks’ current Data Engineer Associate guide includes both Delta Lake and ETL with Spark SQL or PySpark, but does not publish a separate score weight or promise a question on this exact comparison.
What is the difference between Delta Lake ACID and a Spark DataFrame?
They belong to different layers of a data workflow. Delta Lake is a storage layer and table format: it uses a transaction log alongside data files to manage table changes. A DataFrame is a way to represent and transform distributed data using Spark APIs. A DataFrame can read from or write to a Delta table, so the concepts commonly work together.

Databricks describes Delta Lake as an optimized storage layer for lakehouse tables, extending Parquet files with a file-based transaction log for ACID transactions and scalable metadata handling. Its documentation also says Delta is the default format for Databricks tables and is compatible with Apache Spark APIs. Databricks: What is Delta Lake in Databricks?

What do the four ACID properties mean?
Databricks defines ACID as atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability. Its documentation describes these guarantees for tables backed by Delta Lake; other file formats or integrated systems may not provide transactional guarantees. Databricks: What are ACID guarantees on Databricks?
- Atomicity: A transaction succeeds or fails as a whole, rather than leaving a partially applied change.
- Consistency: Transactions preserve a valid table state, including when operations occur simultaneously.
- Isolation: Concurrent operations are handled with rules for conflicts and the state readers observe.
- Durability: Once a transaction is committed, its changes persist.
For exam study, connect each term to table transactions—not to a DataFrame object by itself. The precise guarantees and available features can depend on the system and platform version.

How do DataFrames and Delta tables work together?
Spark SQL and Apache Spark DataFrame APIs can perform most Delta Lake reads and writes, according to Databricks’ Delta documentation. In practical terms, Spark provides the interface and transformations; Delta Lake governs transactional table behavior when the operation targets a Delta-backed table.

What does the Databricks Data Engineer Associate exam really test?
The official Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate exam guide dated May 4, 2026, describes an introductory data engineering certification with objectives spanning the Databricks platform, ingestion, transformation, and related workflows. It includes Delta Lake as a core platform component and ETL using Spark SQL or PySpark. It does not identify “Delta Lake ACID versus DataFrames” as a dedicated exam section or publish question-level topic weights. Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate Exam Guide (May 4, 2026)

Study the contrast because it clarifies two concepts that appear in the broader platform and ETL scope. Do not infer that the exam guarantees a question on this exact wording, or estimate how many questions will cover either concept: the guide does not provide those details. Databricks advises candidates to check the current guide before taking the exam because the live exam can change.
How should you study the distinction?
- Define each term plainly. Delta Lake is the table storage layer and transaction-log system; a DataFrame is a Spark data abstraction.
- Memorize the ACID terms. Be able to explain atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability in the context of Delta-backed tables.
- Trace the workflow. Identify when Spark SQL or DataFrame APIs are processing data and when the read or write targets a Delta table.
- Keep the boundary clear. A DataFrame alone is not a transactional storage format, and Delta-specific guarantees should not be generalized to every file format.
- Use the live guide. Review the latest official exam guide before sitting the exam rather than relying on older objective descriptions.
For another explanation of Spark architecture, DataFrames, and Delta Lake reliability, Databricks also publishes a Guide to Apache Spark & Delta Lake eBook. It is optional study material, not a stated exam requirement.
