Open the TV’s Apps menu, find and install DIRECTV, then sign in with your DIRECTV account. A supported TV does not generally need a separate streaming device.
Check whether your VIZIO TV supports DIRECTV
DIRECTV lists VIZIO Smart TVs from 2017 onward as compatible and says there is no minimum VIZIO operating-system requirement. That does not mean the app will appear on every model: availability can depend on the particular TV and its app catalog. See DIRECTV’s VIZIO app support page for its current eligibility details.

If you do not know your TV’s model year, check the model number on the set or in its documentation, then use VIZIO support for model-specific help. If the TV is older than 2017, or DIRECTV is missing from its catalog, use the external-device option below.

- A VIZIO Smart TV that meets DIRECTV’s compatibility guidance.
- An internet connection for the TV.
- A registered VIZIO TV account.
- A DIRECTV account and its user ID and password.
For device-specific network instructions, consult your TV’s manual. DIRECTV gives Settings > All Settings > Network as a general example; the wording can vary by model.

Find and install the DIRECTV app
- Connect the VIZIO TV to the internet and open its home screen.
- Open the left navigation menu and select Apps.
- Find DIRECTV by browsing A–Z or categories. Alternatively, use the VIZIO search icon or look in the Movies+TV category of the app catalog.
- Select DIRECTV and download or install the app.
- Open the app and sign in with your DIRECTV user ID and password.
Menu labels and catalog availability can vary by TV model. DIRECTV’s VIZIO setup and troubleshooting instructions describe these routes.
If the app is missing or will not play
DIRECTV does not appear in Apps or search
Check the model year and confirm that the TV is online. Even within the supported model-year range, app availability is model and catalog dependent. If it remains unavailable, connect a compatible streaming device to the TV’s HDMI input and use the DIRECTV app on that device.

The app opens but playback fails
- Check that the TV is connected to the internet.
- Check for TV software and DIRECTV app updates.
- If the problem is limited to DIRECTV, remove and reinstall the app.
- Check the connection speed. DIRECTV recommends 8 Mbps per stream for in-home viewing; for mobile, on-the-go viewing it recommends 2.5–7.5 Mbps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of playback quality.

Use a streaming device if the TV is unsupported
When the built-in app is unavailable, an external streamer is the alternative. DIRECTV’s compatible-device list includes Amazon Fire TV Stick models using Fire OS 5 or higher. Check the specific device’s generation and software requirements before choosing one. You will also need an available HDMI input. A compatible VIZIO TV with the native app does not need this extra device.

Check account, package, and location limits
Signing in requires a DIRECTV account. The programming available in the app depends on the selected package and options. DIRECTV states that availability is limited to the United States, except Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. See its DIRECTV App viewing information for service details.
DIRECTV announced VIZIO Smart TV app availability on September 22, 2025, describing access to live TV, on-demand shows and movies, and personalized programming. Its current VIZIO support page is the relevant source for setup and compatibility.
