DirectStorage and shader precompilation speed up different parts of PC game loading. DirectStorage helps move game assets from storage with less CPU overhead and can offload decompression to the GPU. Precompiled shaders reduce the work of preparing shader programs on the player’s PC, which can shorten first-launch preparation and reduce shader-compilation stutter when a game and system support it. Neither is a universal loading switch, and they are not substitutes.

Is DirectStorage the same as shader compilation?

No. DirectStorage concerns getting a game’s assets from storage into use: it can handle many small reads with less CPU overhead and, in supported implementations, use the GPU to decompress assets. Shader compilation turns shader programs into a form suited to a particular GPU and driver. Microsoft describes these as separate workloads: DirectStorage addresses high-speed asset I/O, while Advanced Shader Delivery delivers precompiled shader results for supported Windows 11 Direct3D 12 games.

Question DirectStorage Shader precompilation / Advanced Shader Delivery
What work does it target? Asset reads from storage, I/O overhead, and decompression. Compiling shader programs into GPU- and driver-specific results.
When might it help? Level loading or asset streaming when storage, I/O, or decompression is limiting. Shader preparation at first launch and runtime shader-compilation stutter, where supported.
What support is needed? A game that implements DirectStorage; storage, operating-system path, and hardware affect results. A supported game and storefront, Windows build, GPU, and driver/compiler combination.
Does a hardware upgrade automatically enable it? An NVMe SSD may help a storage-limited workload, but does not retrofit game support. No general-purpose hardware purchase substitutes for supported delivery of precompiled shaders.

Does DirectStorage make games load faster?

It can, when a game uses DirectStorage and asset I/O or decompression is part of the delay. Microsoft’s October 2022 DirectStorage 1.1 article said games installed on NVMe drives should expect loading-time reductions of up to 40%. That was a dated expectation, not a guarantee or a result for every game. In the same article, Microsoft’s optimized sample loaded a scene in 0.8 seconds with GPU GDeflate versus 2.36 seconds with CPU Zlib; Microsoft cautioned that performance varies by workload and hardware. The sample illustrates a particular decompression case, not a whole-game promise. See Microsoft’s DirectStorage 1.1 explanation.

DirectStorage is a game implementation, not a Windows toggle that makes every title use a faster storage path. Microsoft says games can work with different storage devices, while recommending NVMe for higher bandwidth and to maximize DirectStorage I/O gains. An internal NVMe SSD is worth considering only if the current drive is slower and storage is a meaningful limit; it will not precompile shaders. See Microsoft’s PC release guidance.

Does precompiling shaders reduce loading time?

It can shorten shader preparation at first launch, because the PC can use prepared shader results rather than compiling them locally at that point. Reducing just-in-time shader compilation can also reduce gameplay stutter caused by that work. This is not a promise of faster asset loading, higher rendering performance, or zero stutter from every cause.

Microsoft’s October 1, 2026 announcement for Gears of War: E-Day said shader compilation at first launch took a few seconds with Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD), compared with several minutes on a typical PC without it. That is a vendor-reported result for one game, not a universal estimate. In a separate May 2026 Forza Horizon 6 example, Microsoft reported four seconds versus almost 1.5 minutes and 95% time savings on a PC with an AMD Radeon RX 7600 and Ryzen 7 5800. Those figures describe that game and setup only; they should not be compared directly with the DirectStorage examples, which measured different work. What does Advanced Shader Delivery require?

ASD is conditional on the game, storefront, Windows version, GPU, and driver. Microsoft’s October 1, 2026 availability snapshot says Gears of War: E-Day supports ASD through the Xbox PC app and requires Windows 11 24H2 or higher. The announcement lists AMD RDNA 1, 2, 3, 3.5, and 4 GPUs with Adrenalin 26.6.1 or higher, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series with driver 2026.08.3 or higher.

That announcement described support for Intel Arc B-Series B570/B580, Intel Core Ultra Series 2/3, all Nvidia RTX GPUs, and RTX Spark as planned to expand later in October 2026. It did not establish that those additions were already available on October 1. Check Microsoft’s current announcement and the game’s requirements before relying on compatibility. These are requirements for the cited example, not a universal list for every game or every kind of shader cache.

How can you tell which kind of delay you have?

  • Shader-related clues: a first-run shader-compilation screen or stutter associated with shader compilation points toward shader work.
  • Asset-loading clues: a long wait as a level loads or pulls in assets can involve storage, decompression, CPU work, or other game-specific tasks.
  • Measure before diagnosing: what you observe can suggest a cause, but does not prove the bottleneck on a particular PC. Microsoft’s Windows game guidance identifies driver shader compilation as a potential CPU cost and recommends profiling; it is developer guidance, not a current benchmark for a specific computer. See Microsoft’s Windows title performance guidance.

Which should you prioritize?

There is no universal winner: each helps only when its own work is limiting, and a game can benefit from both. No official source cited here provides a controlled, same-game, same-PC head-to-head benchmark of DirectStorage and shader precompilation. Use the symptom as a starting point, then check title and system support before treating either feature as the fix.

  1. Check the game. Confirm that it implements DirectStorage or supports ASD; neither is enabled for every PC game by a Windows setting alone.
  2. Check the platform and hardware. For ASD, verify the Windows build, storefront, GPU, and driver against the game’s current requirements. For DirectStorage, consider the game’s storage needs and the drive it uses.
  3. Match the remedy to the measured bottleneck. Consider NVMe for demonstrated storage limits. For shader delays, look for game/platform support for precompiled shader delivery or the game’s shader-cache behavior—not a faster SSD.
  4. Keep expectations specific. A faster asset-streaming phase may leave other startup work unchanged, and shader precompilation does not eliminate stutter caused by unrelated work.
