Use the issue or preview page as the main link when reviewers need the report’s description and discussion. Add a direct file URL when they need to open a particular attachment immediately. Before sharing, check that the intended recipients can access both links and that the saved report displays them as expected.
What should you link in a bug report?
The two links serve different purposes. An issue or preview page keeps evidence alongside the bug description, reproduction steps, and discussion. A direct file URL takes a reviewer straight to a screenshot, video, log, or other attachment.

For most reports, make the issue page the primary link. If one attachment needs separate, immediate access, include its direct URL as a clearly labeled secondary link. Use both when context and a specific file are independently useful. This is practical guidance based on how platforms handle reports and uploads, not a rule established by a controlled comparison of triage outcomes.

Will recipients be able to open the links?
Do not assume that a direct attachment URL is public just because it is shareable, or that it has the same access rules as the issue page. Permissions depend on the platform, project or repository visibility, file type, and sometimes configuration.

GitHub attachments
GitHub says files attached to issues, pull requests, and comments are uploaded and represented in the text field by an anonymized URL. Attachments in public repositories can be accessed without authentication; attachments in private and internal repositories are limited to people with repository access. An anonymized URL is not a substitute for checking whether the intended audience has permission to view the repository. See GitHub’s documentation on attaching files.
GitLab attachments
GitLab documents that uploaded files use direct URLs containing a random 32-character ID. For public projects or groups, anyone with the direct attachment URL can access uploaded files, even when the related issue, merge request, or epic is confidential. For private and internal projects, access rules differ by file type: non-image files are restricted to authenticated project members, while images have different defaults unless authorization checks are enabled. Check GitLab’s user file uploads documentation for the applicable rules, and be cautious about downloading files from unknown or untrusted sources, particularly executables and scripts.

When linking to an issue or internal documentation that some readers cannot access, explain that access is restricted rather than presenting the link as universally available. GitLab’s documentation style guide gives this advice for confidential issues and internal handbook pages.
What evidence should you attach?
Choose evidence that helps someone understand or reproduce the bug. For error messages, logs, and other text-based output, paste the relevant text into the report when appropriate; it can be easier to search, quote, and inspect than an image. GitLab Support’s policy says copying and pasting text is its most efficient option for customers and support engineers. That is guidance for GitLab Support, not a universal requirement for every tracker.

A screenshot can be more useful when the problem is visual or depends on interface layout. GitLab Support likewise notes that screenshots can help explain UI or front-end problems. Avoid uploading sensitive material, and do not share file types that can contain executable code unless the recipient and workflow explicitly support them. See GitLab Support’s General Policies.

A preview shows how a report looks before it is submitted; it does not by itself prove that the saved version will render every link the same way. Open the saved report and test the links in the form your recipients will use.

A GitLab issue opened on March 24, 2021, documented a specific discrepancy: links using schemes such as file://, smb://, or nfs:// were clickable in preview but became plain text after saving. This is a historical example involving particular non-HTTP(S) schemes; it does not establish that ordinary web links, or links on other trackers, generally fail. See GitLab issue #325840.

Quick checks before sharing
- Lead with context: link the issue or report page when readers need its description, steps, expected and actual behavior, or discussion.
- Label direct attachments: add a direct URL only when a particular file needs to be opened separately, and say what it contains.
- Check audience access: test each link with the permissions and account context available to the intended recipients. Pay attention to confidential issues and project or repository visibility.
- Inspect the saved report: confirm links remain clickable and point to the intended destination after submission.
- Review the contents: remove sensitive data and avoid sharing potentially executable files unless the workflow calls for them.
