Build an Italian Copy Reviewer That Cites Its Style Guide with Sanity Context

Sanity Context can give a custom Italian copy-review agent read-only access to a style guide in Sanity, but it does not provide the reviewer or its citation interface. Your application must run the agent, apply the editorial rules, and show the specific source passage behind each suggested edit.

What Sanity Context contributes—and what it does not

Sanity Context is a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that gives agents scoped, read-only access to Sanity content. For an Italian copy reviewer, it can retrieve relevant style-guide material so a separate agent application can use it while reviewing text. Sanity describes Context as useful for grounding agents in curated knowledge and for working with structured content. Sanity Context documentation

Sanity states: “It does not run the agent loop itself, and it cannot write back to your dataset.” In practice, you need an MCP-capable harness to run the review, prompts or other application logic to define how it behaves, and an interface for presenting suggestions and their supporting sources. The documented capabilities can support citations, but Sanity does not claim to ship a complete Italian copy-review product or a ready-made citation display.

Choose how the reviewer retrieves editorial guidance

Sanity Context offers two relevant retrieval paths. Choose according to where the guidance lives, how quickly changes must appear, and whether the agent needs to draw on several prose sources. Sanity’s comparison of Context retrieval modes

Mode How it works Best fit for a style guide
GROQ Queries the live Sanity dataset at request time. A structured guide stored in Sanity with a consistent schema, especially when the reviewer should see current dataset content.
Knowledge Base Retrieves material indexed ahead of time. Guidance spread across prose or multiple sources that the reviewer may need to reconcile.

The distinction affects freshness and content organization: GROQ reads live structured data, while a Knowledge Base relies on indexed material. Decide which is more important for your workflow rather than assuming the two modes are interchangeable.

Design recommendations that show their evidence

Make source traceability an application requirement. The goal is not simply to produce better-sounding Italian, but to let an editor see which rule supports each proposed change.

  1. Limit the available material. Configure the Context endpoint to expose the style guide and only the other editorial sources the reviewer needs.
  2. Ask for rule-based explanations. In the agent instructions, require each proposed edit to identify the applicable rule and explain how the change follows it. Specify how to handle conflicting guidance and what to do when no relevant rule is found.
  3. Preserve the retrieved reference. Have the application retain the source reference alongside each suggestion, then display that evidence to the editor. Do not rely on a model-generated rule name or explanation alone as proof that a passage was retrieved.
  4. Check traceability before release. Verify that reviewers can follow each suggestion to the precise supporting rule or passage, that unsupported suggestions are clearly marked, and that the evidence is legible in the interface. These are implementation checks, not reported test results.

Sanity says Knowledge Base entries are Markdown documents written from their sources with citations back to those sources. Context instructions can shape entries and guide how conflicts are handled. These features provide building blocks for a cited workflow; your application still needs to connect the retrieved references to individual edits. Sanity Knowledge Bases documentation

Requirements and access controls

Requirements vary by retrieval mode. Sanity’s setup documentation lists the following prerequisites. Sanity Context requirements

  • GROQ mode: A Sanity project containing content and a deployed schema. Server-side schema support requires Sanity Studio 5.1.0 or later.
  • Knowledge Base mode: At least one Knowledge Base that the token is allowed to read.
  • Either setup: Enable Context for the organization, use an organization API token with Context Viewer permissions, and connect through an MCP-capable model harness. Sanity’s quick start covers the guided setup. Sanity Context quick start

Access is bounded by the organization token, the sources attached to the MCP configuration, and a GROQ filter where applicable. Sanity’s security documentation says a project token is refused even if it has broad project permissions; Context Viewer is the least-privilege role listed as working. Keep the token on the server side. Context is read-only in both retrieval modes. Sanity Context content access and security

Set up and validate the workflow

  1. Choose GROQ or Knowledge Base. Base the choice on whether the guide is structured and must be read live, or whether the reviewer needs indexed prose from multiple sources.
  2. Enable and configure Context. Follow the guided quick start or configure the MCP connection manually using the Context MCP reference.
  3. Build the reviewer outside Context. Connect an MCP-capable harness, define the review behavior, and make the application display retrieved source references with its proposed edits.
  4. Test source traceability. Confirm the agent can read the intended guide content and that every recommendation can be checked against its supporting passage. Mark suggestions without support rather than presenting them as guide-backed.

Sanity’s documentation establishes Context’s retrieval and access boundaries, not the accuracy of an Italian grammar policy, a particular tone guide, or a tested reviewer implementation. Those depend on your guide, instructions, evaluation examples, and application design.
