Dipolar Molecules vs. Atoms: How Do Their Collisions Differ?

Polar molecules can collide through long-range, direction-dependent dipole forces. See how that differs from contact-like atomic interactions, and why the comparison depends on the system and conditions.

In the ultracold comparison most often made, polar molecules can interact through long-range, direction-dependent electric dipole forces, while dilute ultracold atomic gases are commonly described by short-range, nearly isotropic contact interactions. That contrast is useful, but not universal: collision behavior also depends on the particles’ species, internal states, quantum statistics, energy, and applied fields.

What makes a dipolar molecular collision different?

In their 2010 study of ultracold potassium-rubidium (KRb) molecules, the authors described polar molecules as offering interactions that are “strong, long-range and spatially anisotropic.” They contrasted them with the “much studied dilute gases of ultracold atoms, which have isotropic and extremely short-range (or ‘contact’) interactions.” These phrases describe the systems and comparison in that paper, not an absolute division between every molecule and every atom. Read the 2010 Nature paper, “Dipolar collisions of polar molecules in the quantum regime.”

Range and direction

A contact-like interaction is effectively confined to very short distances. Dipole-dipole forces act over longer distances and depend on the relative orientation of the dipoles. As a result, the approach geometry can influence molecular collision dynamics, alongside the short-range details of what happens when the particles get close. An anisotropic interaction does not mean every measured outcome must display the same directional pattern.

Atoms are not always nondipolar

The atomic comparison is a useful model for dilute gases with contact-like interactions, but it should not be read as saying atoms can never have dipolar forces. Some atoms carry magnetic dipole moments. The relevant question is which interactions are significant for the species and state being studied.

Why species, energy and quantum statistics matter

At ultralow collision energies, quantum statistics constrain which partial waves—quantized forms of relative motion—can contribute. Whether particles are identical bosons or identical fermions changes those constraints, and different collision energies can change which pathways are important. Consequently, a collision rate or scaling law measured for one molecular gas cannot be treated as a general “molecules versus atoms” rule.

The 2010 KRb experiment concerned fermionic polar molecules in a particular ultracold regime. Its authors observed a steep dependence of the measured loss rate on the induced dipole moment and interpreted the trend using quantum-threshold laws. They concluded that the long-range dipolar interaction could be used for electric-field control of chemical reaction rates in that gas. This result demonstrates a control mechanism in that system; it does not establish the same rate dependence for every species or internal state.

How electric fields and resonances provide control

Tuning an induced dipole

An electric field can induce a dipole moment in a polar molecule and vary its strength. Because the dipole-dipole interaction depends on that moment, changing the field can alter collision behavior. In the KRb experiment, the measured loss rate changed steeply with induced dipole moment, connecting field control to reaction behavior under the experiment’s conditions.

Field-linked resonances

A 2023 experiment reported a field-linked resonance in ultracold polar molecules. The authors said it provides a way to tune elastic contact and dipole-dipole interactions, observed through a change in thermalization rate. They also noted a challenge: rapid short-range loss makes conventional Feshbach resonances difficult in many ultracold polar-molecule systems. A resonance is therefore a possible control tool, not a guarantee that losses disappear. Read “Field-linked resonances of polar molecules” in Nature (2023).

Collisions can be reactive, not just elastic

An elastic collision changes particles’ motion without changing their chemical identity. Inelastic or reactive encounters can instead change internal states, produce reaction products, or remove particles from the trapped sample. For molecules, the collision can also form an intermediate complex before products emerge.

A 2022 review discusses KRb + KRb → K2 + Rb2 reactions initiated below 1 μK, direct observation of a long-lived collision complex, and control of product rotational states linked to conserved nuclear spins. It also reviews tests of statistical predictions for product states. These findings show why molecular collisions involve chemical pathways as well as scattering between intact particles; they should not be mistaken for a general reaction outcome for all molecules. See Liu and Ni’s 2022 review in the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry.

A separate example: cold ammonia

A 2026 study of cold ammonia reports dipole-dipole collision dynamics. Its authors say their scattering calculations reproduce a maximum and explain scaling in relation to molecular parity-splitting energies. This is a distinct cold-ammonia result, not a direct extension of the ultracold KRb gas experiment. The study abstract does not establish exact collision energies or numerical cross sections, so those values should not be inferred from it. Read the 2026 Nature study of cold-ammonia collisions.

How to make a fair comparison

When comparing two collision experiments, check the actual conditions rather than relying only on whether the particles are called atoms or molecules:

With those details attached, the central contrast is clear without overstating it: dipolar molecular interactions add long-range anisotropy and field-tunable pathways to collision physics, while many dilute ultracold atomic gases are well described by isotropic contact-like interactions. The specific collision outcome remains a property of the system and regime being measured.
