Dione begins crossing Saturn just after 11:40 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and takes about 90 minutes to cross. The transit continues past midnight in UTC, ending on October 4. It is a challenging event: Dione is faint, and its shadow is expected to be all but impossible to see by eye.

When does Dione transit Saturn?

The crossing starts just after 11:40 p.m. EDT on October 3 and lasts about an hour and a half, according to Astronomy magazine’s October 3 event guide. Because EDT is four hours behind UTC, that is approximately 3:40–5:10 a.m. UTC on October 4. The Instituto Geográfico Nacional de España’s October 2026 astronomical-events atlas lists the transit from 03:39 to 05:12 UT on October 4. The times differ slightly because the magazine gives an approximate start and duration.

What happens during the transit?

From our line of sight, Dione passes across Saturn’s far northern region, with its shadow nearby and north-northwest of the moon. This is an apparent crossing over the planet’s disk, not a collision and not a transit across the Sun.

Astronomy magazine describes Dione as tenth magnitude. Saturn’s bright disk and the moon’s small apparent size make the crossing difficult to resolve visually; the magazine says Dione’s shadow will be all but impossible to pick up by eye.

Can you see Dione or its shadow?

There is no supported telescope size or tested setup that guarantees a view of Dione crossing Saturn. Ordinary visual observing is not a reliable way to catch the shadow. Treat the event as a difficult observing target rather than a spectacle that will be obvious in any telescope.

Approach What it involves What the sources support
Visual telescopic observing Watch Saturn live through a telescope. The event guide calls Dione tenth magnitude and says its shadow will be all but impossible to see visually; it does not specify an aperture threshold or guarantee detection.
Planetary video imaging Experienced astrophotographers record high-speed video and inspect the footage. A detection may be possible under the best conditions, but the October guide gives no camera specifications or likelihood of success.

If you are attempting the video-imaging route, the monthly observing guide says recording under the best conditions is needed for an event this difficult. It does not recommend a particular camera or accessory. A telescope is the relevant broad equipment category for observing Saturn, but no specific model or performance claim is established.

Where will Saturn’s other moons appear?

For this event, the guide places Tethys and Rhea west of Saturn, with Tethys closer to the planet. Titan is 3.3 arcminutes east and is reported to be about 1.5 magnitudes brighter than Dione. These are positions for the event, not a general map of Saturn’s moons.

What are the local sky conditions?

The event guide’s daily sky figures are for its reference location, 40° N, 90° W: sunrise at 6:58 a.m., sunset at 6:39 p.m., moonset at 2:50 p.m., and a 44% waning-crescent Moon at 10 p.m. local time. These figures do not describe every observer’s sky. Check a local ephemeris or sky app for Saturn’s altitude, horizon conditions, and event timing at your location.
