Compare the exact plan’s included outbound transfer and overage terms against your stream’s bitrate and uptime, then confirm that its CPU can handle your encoder workload. DigitalOcean pools Droplet transfer at team level and documents a charge of $0.01/GiB for additional outbound transfer; Vultr describes a 2 TB monthly account allowance alongside instance allocations that accrue hourly while running. Those billing mechanics can matter more than headline CPU counts for a stream that sends data around the clock.
Start by calculating the stream’s outbound data
A live encoder sends a sustained stream of data to YouTube. Estimate that traffic before choosing a Droplet or Vultr instance; a bandwidth allowance is not a promise of unlimited streaming.

- Choose the output settings. Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Its encoder settings provide the relevant guidance.
- Multiply bitrate by planned uptime. Convert the resulting data volume into the units used by the provider’s plan. Allow some margin for protocol overhead, restarts and variation in actual operation.
- Compare against the specific plan’s terms. Account for DigitalOcean’s team-level transfer pool or Vultr’s account and instance allocation rules, and check what happens if you exceed the allowance.
- Recheck the current plan. Price, included transfer and configuration availability depend on the selected plan and may change.
For a simple illustration of the calculation, 1 megabit per second sustained for 30 days represents about 324 GB of decimal data before overhead. Use your actual bitrate and uptime rather than treating that illustration as a plan requirement.

The allowances and billing systems are not directly interchangeable: one provider’s pooled team transfer and another’s account/instance mechanics require separate calculations. Do not declare one cheaper without a like-for-like estimate for your region, selected plans, bitrate, uptime and expected encoder load.

Compute: relay an encoded file or encode a live scene?
Bandwidth is only one constraint. Work out whether the server will send an already encoded video or perform encoding/transcoding. Encoding a scene at a chosen resolution, frame rate and codec can place a very different load on a VM than relaying a prepared stream. Check CPU load and YouTube stream health with the actual source and settings before relying on a configuration.
Vultr’s documented starting point
Vultr’s OBS and FFmpeg streaming-server guide gives a starting baseline of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage and 3 TB bandwidth for its Ubuntu setup. This is the guide’s stated prerequisite, not an independent performance benchmark or a guarantee of reliable 24/7 operation.

DigitalOcean plan choice
DigitalOcean offers different Droplet CPU classes and configurations. Its documentation lists a maximum network throughput limit of 2 Gbps for ordinary non-GPU Droplets, with a higher limit for Premium CPU configurations. That is a network ceiling, not a promise of sustained application-level encoder performance. Review the specific configuration and current Droplet features, limits and pricing.

Compare the full monthly cost for the same workload, not just the listed VM price. Include compute, storage, any applicable public IP or other line items, outbound overage, and the period the instance remains billable.

- DigitalOcean billing detail: Droplets are billed per second under the published pricing documentation; powering off a bundled CPU Droplet does not stop billing. Destruction is required to end billing for that Droplet.
- Transfer: estimate outbound usage from the planned bitrate and uptime, then apply each provider’s own allowance and overage rules.
- Current quote: use the provider’s current plan page or calculator for your selected region and configuration. Published rates and availability can change.
DigitalOcean’s current billing details are on its Droplet pricing page; verify Vultr’s selected plan and billing terms directly before purchase. The available documentation does not establish a like-for-like monthly bill for a defined continuous-stream workload.
Configure YouTube Live independently of the host
The cloud provider supplies the server; YouTube’s ingest details and channel rules still apply. The encoder needs YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts and logs, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is compromised.

- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review the current live-stream tips.
- Use YouTube’s encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate using its encoder settings guidance.
- Connect and test. Add the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder, then use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators. Test with representative audio and motion before depending on the setup; YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring for live events in its live-stream tips.
- Plan long sessions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a broadcast may exceed that duration, plan session and archive behavior deliberately and check current Live Control Room behavior rather than assuming one indefinitely archived stream.
You remain responsible for the rights to the material you broadcast, including music rights, and for following YouTube’s live-stream terms. Monetization features such as ads and Super Chat depend on channel eligibility and available features; they are not guaranteed by the choice of hosting provider. Keep the broadcast recoverable
A VM is not, by itself, an unbroken broadcast. Test what happens when the encoder stops, the source becomes unavailable, or YouTube drops the connection. Arrange monitoring, restart behavior, secure key handling and backups appropriate to the importance of the channel. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing failover for events in its live-stream tips.
