Neither DigitalOcean Droplets nor AWS Lightsail is automatically the cheaper or better choice for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Compare specific plans in the same region against your stream’s bitrate, outbound traffic, and whether the virtual machine encodes video or only relays an already encoded feed. DigitalOcean pools included transfer across a team and charges for outbound overage; Lightsail’s allowance is tied to the selected bundle and varies by region.
DigitalOcean vs Lightsail: what matters most
A cloud virtual machine does not make a broadcast continuous by itself. You still need a working encoder or relay process, a source that remains available, restart and monitoring arrangements, and a plan for recording. The key cost variable is often outbound data transfer, while the key sizing question is whether the VM must encode video.

DigitalOcean’s published pricing and Droplet limits are not directly comparable to a single Lightsail bundle without selecting a region, plan and workload. Lightsail transfer allowances are reduced to half the allowance available in other regions in some Asia-Pacific regions and São Paulo; check the current Lightsail transfer documentation for the specific region.
Estimate how much bandwidth your stream will use
For a single constant-bitrate stream, a useful planning estimate is 10.8 × bitrate in Mbps = decimal GB sent in a 30-day month. This is a calculation from bitrate multiplied by the seconds in 30 days, not a provider-published figure. It excludes protocol overhead and any separate backup feed; billing units and provider accounting may also differ.

The example bitrates are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. Actual bitrate depends on content and configuration. Include audio if it is additional to the video target, as well as overhead, restarts and backup feeds, when estimating real transfer.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its streaming tips also recommend upload capacity calculated as primary stream plus backup stream plus 20% (encoder and network guidance). That upload-capacity recommendation is about network headroom; it does not mean a backup stream is required or included in the monthly data examples above.

How to choose a Droplet or Lightsail bundle
- Set the stream target. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate using YouTube’s encoder guidance. Use the intended stream bitrate for both transfer estimates and network planning.
- Decide what the VM does. If it encodes, select a plan for sustained CPU and memory demand and validate it under the actual encoding settings. If it only relays an already encoded feed, the compute requirements differ; do not pay for encoding capacity you do not use.
- Choose a region and candidate plans. Compare DigitalOcean and Lightsail options in the same region where possible. For each candidate, note compute, storage, included transfer and the relevant network terms. For Lightsail, check whether the region has a reduced transfer allowance.
- Calculate monthly transfer. Multiply stream bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 for an approximate decimal-GB total over 30 days, then add expected overhead and any additional feeds. Compare the result with the selected plan’s allowance and applicable overage terms.
- Test and observe the actual workload. Run the intended encoder or relay under sustained load. Verify CPU, memory, network stability, process restarts and YouTube’s stream status; provider specifications alone do not establish that a particular workload will succeed.
- Include operations in the decision. Account for monitoring, automatic process recovery, backup source or encoder, and a separate recording/archive strategy. A VM bill is not the whole cost of a dependable broadcast.
DigitalOcean publishes its Droplet plan pricing and Droplet limits. AWS publishes Lightsail bundle pricing and regional transfer details in its transfer documentation. Check those pages for current terms before purchasing; exact cost depends on the candidates and usage.

A continuous live broadcast is not necessarily a continuous YouTube archive. YouTube says a live stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive as backup (Archive live streams, accessed 2026-10-03). If you need a complete recording, design a separate recording and file-management process rather than relying on YouTube’s archive for an uninterrupted, very long stream.

Before going live, YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. YouTube also advises previewing and monitoring an encoder stream (Get started with live streaming). Hosting a VM does not override channel eligibility or prevent stream interruptions.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 cloud stream
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the encoder or relay is running and configured with the correct YouTube stream key and RTMPS ingest settings. Preview the stream in YouTube before starting a public broadcast.
- The stream drops under load: Determine whether the VM is encoding or relaying, then inspect sustained CPU, memory and network use. Reduce encoding workload or test a better-sized plan; published throughput ceilings are not a guarantee for a particular instance.
- Transfer charges exceed the estimate: Recheck bitrate, stream duration, overhead, backup feeds and billing units. Confirm whether the DigitalOcean allowance is shared across the team or the Lightsail allowance belongs to the chosen bundle and region.
- The live stream runs but the recording is incomplete: Do not treat YouTube’s archive as a guaranteed record of a stream longer than 12 hours. Maintain a separate archive process and verify that it is saving complete files.
- The process stops and stays stopped: A VM alone does not restart an encoder or restore a missing source. Configure process supervision and monitoring, and decide how you will respond to a failed source or encoder.
