Disc games are easier to lend or pass on, but ordinary play requires the disc and a console with an optical drive. Neither format guarantees that every game works offline or that every bonus and online feature is available. The better fit depends on whether you value convenience and digital-only hardware, or physical media and the ability to hand a copy to someone else.
Digital vs. disc: the key differences
| What matters | Digital game | Disc game |
|---|---|---|
| What grants access | Microsoft documents a user license associated with your Microsoft account and a device license assigned to your Home Xbox. | The disc is ordinarily required as the play entitlement. Installing the game does not remove the need for the disc. |
| Sharing | Other people can use games licensed to your Home Xbox. On another console, your account generally must be signed in and online. | You can lend or transfer the physical copy, but the person playing needs the disc and a compatible console with a drive. |
| Offline play | The Home Xbox is the principal offline location for the device license. Individual games may still require connectivity. | The disc can serve as the play entitlement without relying on the purchaser’s account license, but a game may still require online access. |
| Console compatibility | Digital games work on digital-only consoles, subject to game compatibility. | Requires an optical drive. Xbox Series S and all-digital Series X configurations cannot read discs. |
| Passing a copy on | The account license is governed by Microsoft’s digital-goods rules; do not assume it can be transferred independently. | Physical media can be retained or transferred, subject to title terms. A disc-to-digital license, where available, remains tied to possession of the qualifying disc. |
These are differences in access and use, not a claim that either format gives absolute ownership in the legal sense. Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules describe the digital licenses; hardware and feature limitations are covered in the Xbox console compatibility FAQ.

How digital Xbox game licenses and sharing work
For Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games, Microsoft describes two licenses: a user license associated with your Microsoft account and a device license attached to the designated Home Xbox. Other people signed in on that Home Xbox can use games licensed to the device without the purchaser remaining signed in.
On a different, roaming console, access generally depends on the purchaser signing in and being connected. Microsoft’s developer guidance explains that when the purchaser signs out, roaming licenses become invalid for other accounts on that console. Its rules also state that a game can be played on only one console at a time, with an allowed Home-console scenario when a different user is playing there. See Microsoft’s Xbox developer licensing guidance for the account and device distinction.

Changing your Home Xbox
Microsoft allows up to five Home console changes during a rolling one-year period, measured from the first assignment or change in that period. Changing the Home Xbox moves the device licenses to the new console. This can be useful when replacing a console, but the limit means it is not a setting to switch casually whenever you want to share a game elsewhere. Current terms are in Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules.
Game sharing does not include every add-on
Do not assume that add-ons, downloadable content, or in-game purchases share in the same way as a base game. Microsoft warns that some add-ons may be limited to personal use; its developer guidance says consumable add-ons are account-specific and are not shared. A shared base game therefore does not guarantee that another player can use all associated content.

Can you play digital Xbox games offline?
Microsoft’s licensing guide identifies the Home Xbox as the principal offline location for digital games: a player can run a game on the Home console while offline, while a roaming session on a friend’s console uses the signed-in account. That describes license behavior, not a guarantee that every game will launch offline or that every mode will work without a connection. Games with their own online requirements remain subject to them. See Microsoft’s open and restrictive licensing guidance.

Prepare before you lose connectivity
- Set the console you expect to use offline as your Home Xbox. The Home assignment is what provides the device-based license to users of that console.
- Install the game while you have a connection. An installed file by itself does not establish that the game will work offline.
- Check the game’s own requirements and test the modes you need. Microsoft’s licensing rules do not provide a complete title-by-title list of offline compatibility.
How disc games work after installation
On a compatible Xbox with an optical drive, inserting a disc may start a download or installation to the console’s storage. The disc still needs to remain in the drive to play: it acts as the ordinary play entitlement, not just as an installer. Microsoft describes this for backward-compatible Xbox One discs in its Xbox Series X compatibility FAQ.

- Step into the Octagon: refined gameplay delivers tighter controls, fluid animations, and authentic MMA action.
- Fight your story: new immersive modes add narrative depth, making every bout feel personal and driven by your choices.
A disc can be lent or handed to another person, but only one person can use that copy at a time. The other player needs the disc and a compatible disc-drive console. A used disc does not necessarily include every bonus, downloadable add-on, online entitlement, or service associated with the original purchase, and a title can still require updates or an internet connection.
Which Xbox consoles can play discs?
- Xbox Series S: all-digital; disc-based games are incompatible.
- Xbox Series X: check the exact configuration. Microsoft lists disc-drive and all-digital versions, and only the disc-drive version can read physical media.
- Xbox One consoles: disc play depends on the specific console having an optical drive.
Do not rely on the Series X name alone when buying a console for physical games. The Xbox compatibility FAQ sets out the disc limitation for Series S and the supported hardware conditions.

Can you convert an Xbox disc to a digital license?
Microsoft announced a disc-to-digital feature on August 26, 2026, with Insider testing scheduled to begin August 31. The announced process lets a player claim an entitlement by inserting a supported Xbox One or Series X disc into a supported console with a disc drive and launching the game. Xbox said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but that does not mean every disc qualifies.
Microsoft’s usage rules describe the resulting license as limited access and conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may revalidate eligibility, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the disc. The license cannot be transferred separately from it. Eligibility can change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons and may vary by market. Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are not supported by this feature, according to the Xbox console FAQ.

To check a specific disc, insert it into a supported console and look for the eligibility prompt. The feature is limited to eligible Xbox One or Series X discs, supported disc-drive consoles, and select markets; the FAQ describes one revokable digital license per game disc. A claimed license is not a way to keep the digital access after giving away the qualifying disc. See the Xbox Wire announcement and Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules for current terms.
Which format should you choose?
- Choose digital if you want to switch games without changing discs, use a digital-only console, or share the Home Xbox device license with other users in your household. Be prepared for account-based access away from that console and check the specific game’s offline requirements.
- Choose discs if lending or passing on physical media matters to you and you have a console with an optical drive. Keep in mind that the disc must be available at play time, and online services or extras may have separate requirements.
Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits depend on individual game support; neither is a universal advantage of buying digital or owning a disc. Microsoft’s disc-to-digital announcement says those benefits apply where supported, not for every title.
