Measure both the room and the exact area where the sofa and chairs will sit, then check each piece’s full dimensions against the layout and the entire delivery route. A furniture arrangement can fit the room but still fail to pass through a doorway, around a stair turn, or into an elevator.
What to measure before you shop
Start with the usable space, not just the room’s overall size. A simple sketch with measurements helps you compare candidate furniture against real constraints.

- Room: Measure the length and width. Note ceiling height if it may affect access or placement.
- Proposed furniture zone: Measure the usable sofa wall or area and the space intended for each chair. Account for corners, alcoves, and existing furniture.
- Fixed features: Mark doors and their swing, windows, fireplace, radiators, vents, outlets, built-ins, and other features that could be blocked or limit placement.
- Existing layout: Include tables or other pieces that need to remain, plus the routes people use to enter and cross the room.

Which sofa and chair dimensions matter?
Use the dimensions published for the exact product you are considering; a photo or seat count cannot establish its size. Compare each item’s overall width, depth, and height with the intended space.

- Sofa: Record overall width, depth, and height. For a sectional, include the full chaise or return projection.
- Each chair: Record its overall width, depth, and height, and allow for its position in relation to the sofa and nearby pieces.
- Comfort: Check seat depth and seat height separately if they matter to the people who will use the furniture. These describe the seating experience; they do not replace overall dimensions for placement.
- Delivery: Note any diagonal or other fit measurements and instructions the manufacturer provides. Those may matter for passing through a constrained opening.

Mock up the full layout on the floor
- Measure the footprint of the sofa from the product specifications. Include the complete projection of a chaise or sectional return.
- Use painter’s or masking tape to outline that footprint on the floor. Pottery Barn recommends tape for marking floor dimensions, and Costco describes outlining a rectangular footprint.
- Tape out each chair and any nearby tables or pieces that must fit in the same arrangement.
- Walk through the room as you normally would. Check whether the layout blocks a door, window, natural path, or access to nearby furniture.

Check circulation and everyday use
There is no single clearance figure that works for every room, furniture shape, household, and mobility need. Retailers publish spacing suggestions, but those are starting points rather than universal standards or building-code requirements. Judge the taped arrangement in the actual room: make sure doors can open, people can move through their usual routes, and nearby windows or furniture remain usable. Costco discusses scale and circulation in its room-planning guidance; Furnish NC also offers placement advice in its room-measuring guide.
Measure the delivery route separately
Trace the route the delivery team will use from the building entrance to the furniture’s final position. Pottery Barn says proper measurements are needed both for the space and for all passageways during delivery. Check every constrained point, not just the front door.

- Measure the clear width and height of exterior and interior doorways.
- Measure narrow hallways and passages along the route.
- For stairs, check the usable width, landings, ceiling height, and any tight turns. Include banisters and other projections.
- For elevators, check the door opening and interior dimensions if the furniture must travel in one.
- Look for lights, fixtures, rails, or other obstructions that reduce usable clearance.
A metal tape measure is useful for recording these dimensions. Pottery Barn’s delivery measuring guide and CB2’s delivery FAQ both advise checking passageways and obstacles along the route.
Compare the measurements with the retailer’s fit instructions
Furniture can be maneuvered at an angle, so a product’s overall width alone may not answer whether it can pass through an opening. Use the exact item’s manufacturer-provided fit dimensions and method for the relevant doorway, hallway, stair, or turn.

For example, CB2’s delivery guidance describes comparing a sofa’s diagonal depth with doorway width. Pottery Barn’s measuring instructions distinguish sofa width and diagonal depth and give a separate instruction for armless items. These methods are product- and retailer-specific; a single diagonal measurement does not guarantee that a sofa will clear a complicated turn. If any point is close or uncertain, ask the retailer or delivery service to confirm the fit before ordering.

Keep a measurement checklist
- Room length and width, plus a sketch of doors, windows, fixtures, and existing furniture.
- Usable placement dimensions for the sofa and each chair.
- Exact product width, depth, and height; sectional projections; and any relevant seat or delivery dimensions.
- A taped floor plan with the sofa, chairs, and nearby pieces outlined.
- Clear widths and heights for each doorway and narrow passage, plus measurements for stairs, turns, landings, and elevators as applicable.
- The manufacturer’s fit instructions and confirmation from the retailer or delivery service if access is uncertain.
Use a metal tape measure for room and route dimensions, and painter’s tape or masking tape for floor footprints. Those two simple tools address different checks: one records clearance, the other helps you judge the layout.
