Digital side mirrors use exterior cameras and cabin displays to show a driver the view normally provided by exterior mirrors. They can replace required mirrors only where local vehicle rules permit and the specific vehicle is approved for that use; a camera that merely supplements a conventional mirror is a different feature. In the United States, conventional exterior mirrors remain the baseline in the federal regulatory sources cited here, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2026 statement about planned rulemaking is not itself a change in the rules.
What a digital side mirror is—and what it is not
A camera-monitor system (CMS) for mirror replacement uses exterior cameras to capture prescribed side or rear views and sends the images to displays inside the cabin. A display may sit near an A-pillar, on the dashboard, or elsewhere; unlike a conventional mirror, it does not need to lie along a direct optical path from the driver’s eyes to the reflected scene.

That is different from a backup camera, an interior rearview display, or a supplemental blind-spot camera. For example, NHTSA described Honda LaneWatch as a passenger-side camera whose image appeared on the center display when activated. It supplemented the exterior mirror rather than replacing a required mirror. NHTSA’s 2019 Federal Register notice discusses this distinction.

Why automakers are exploring camera mirrors
Smaller exterior hardware
Replacing a bulky mirror assembly with a smaller camera housing may give vehicle designers more freedom around the doors and windows. Manufacturers have also cited potential aerodynamic benefits. Those are design aims, not proof that every CMS-equipped vehicle uses less energy or gains a measurable amount of range. Such claims need vehicle-specific official data.

View and display flexibility
A camera and display can be designed to show a wider field than a conventional mirror, and the screen can be placed to suit a cabin layout. But a wider view compressed onto a similarly sized display can make vehicles and other objects look smaller or narrower. A screen in a new location may also require drivers to change where and how often they glance.
Image adjustments
Image processing and display brightness can affect visibility in changing light. In one tested prototype, NHTSA observed brighter displayed areas at dawn and dusk and minimal sunlight glare. That finding applies to the prototype in the study, not to all commercial systems or all conditions.

What NHTSA’s prototype evaluation found
NHTSA examined a prototype CMS installed on a 2016 Audi A4 and compared it with a 2017 Audi A4 fitted with production mirrors. The report says the prototype exceeded FMVSS No. 111 field-of-view requirements and had image clarity comparable to exterior mirrors. It also found a tradeoff: showing a wider view on a display with an area similar to a mirror made objects appear narrower and more difficult to discern.

This is a finding about one prototype system, not evidence that every production camera mirror offers a wider or safer view than a conventional mirror. The study assessed visibility and image quality; it did not establish crash reduction, and it did not evaluate component durability or reliability. NHTSA also identified environmental conditions such as rain, darkness, and lens obstruction as issues for evaluation. Read NHTSA’s prototype report.

Are digital side mirrors legal in the US?
The answer depends on whether the camera supplements a mirror or replaces one. NHTSA’s 2019 advance notice described Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111 as requiring rearview mirrors on new vehicles and asked for comment on allowing camera-monitor systems as an alternative. An advance notice of proposed rulemaking is not a final rule permitting replacement.

In a July 2026 keynote, NHTSA said it planned to amend FMVSS No. 111 requirements concerning mirrors and rearview displays as part of its automated-vehicle work. That statement describes agency plans; it does not itself amend the standard or establish general permission for human-driven vehicles to replace required side mirrors with CMS. Check the current federal rule and the specific vehicle’s approval before treating a camera as a legal mirror substitute. The 2019 Federal Register notice and NHTSA’s 2026 keynote provide the cited regulatory context.
How international standards fit
ISO 16505:2019 specifies minimum safety, ergonomic, and performance requirements for CMS that replace mandatory mirrors within its scope. ISO’s page notes a 2021 amendment and that the standard is under revision. NHTSA’s 2019 notice also describes UNECE Regulation No. 46 as amended to permit CMS in applicable jurisdictions. These standards and regulatory pathways are not blanket approval in every country: legality depends on local rules and vehicle approval. See ISO 16505:2019 and its status.

What happens if a camera mirror fails—or the lens gets dirty?
A CMS relies on cameras, displays, connections, and power to deliver its view. A fault in any part of that chain could interrupt or degrade the image. The NHTSA prototype evaluation did not test component durability or reliability, so it does not establish how often failures occur or what backup behavior a particular production vehicle provides.
Rain, darkness, glare, and lens contamination can also affect the camera’s view. The cited evaluation identifies these conditions as matters that require consideration; it does not show that every system handles them equally. Before relying on a vehicle’s CMS, consult its owner’s manual for warnings, cleaning guidance, fault indicators, and what view remains available if a component fails.
Do camera mirrors improve fuel economy or electric range?
Smaller external housings may reduce aerodynamic drag, which is why manufacturers have presented efficiency as a possible benefit. The NHTSA prototype study was not a fleet-wide energy, fuel-economy, or range test, and the cited sources provide no general improvement figure. A meaningful number would need to come from official data for a particular vehicle and configuration.
Which vehicles offer mirror-replacement CMS?
Availability is specific to the vehicle, model year, and market. The examples in NHTSA’s 2019 notice—a Lexus ES version commercialized only in Japan at the time, a 250-vehicle Volkswagen XL1 production run in Europe, and an expected Audi e-tron option in Europe—are historical, not a current shopping list. To confirm a present-day offering, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact market and verify that the vehicle’s camera system is approved as a mirror replacement there.
What is still unknown about safety and adoption?
The cited primary sources do not establish representative crash-outcome evidence or a current market adoption rate for mirror-replacement CMS. NHTSA’s prototype evaluation can describe performance for the system it tested, but it cannot answer whether the technology reduces crashes across a fleet. A broader safety verdict would require evidence beyond that prototype assessment.
