A digital home hub is a central point for setting up or controlling compatible smart-home devices. Depending on the product, it may be a Matter controller, a bridge for certain devices that do not support Matter natively, a Thread border router—or a combination. The label “hub” alone does not tell you which functions it provides.
What does a digital home hub do?
A hub gives a household a place to connect and manage compatible devices. Its exact role depends on the product and the smart-home platform it supports. A hub may be a standalone device, or its functions may be built into a speaker, display, router, or another product.

For a Matter setup, the usual pieces are a Matter-certified device, a compatible controller, and an app. The app and controller must support the ecosystem and setup you intend to use; check the manufacturer’s current compatibility details and firmware requirements. TP-Link’s Matter setup guide outlines its product compatibility and setup considerations.

These terms describe related functions, but they are not interchangeable. A single product can perform more than one of them.

- Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.
- Matter controller: Discovers, pairs, and controls Matter-certified devices. The controller may be a dedicated hub or a feature built into another device.
- Bridge: Connects certain devices that do not natively support Matter to a Matter ecosystem. Bridge support does not mean every non-Matter device can be integrated.
- Thread border router: Connects a Thread network to other IP networks. Matter controller support does not, by itself, mean a product can serve as a Thread border router.
For an overview of these Matter-related roles, see TP-Link UK’s Matter guide.
Does a digital home hub work with devices from different brands?
Sometimes, but compatibility depends on the specific devices, controller, app, and platform—not just on the word “hub” or the presence of Matter. Confirm that the exact device models are supported by your chosen platform and that the features you need are included. Matter support does not guarantee that every device works with every platform or that every feature is available across ecosystems.

As one manufacturer-documented example, TP-Link describes its Tapo H500 as both a Matter controller for Matter-certified products and a Matter bridge for integrating certain TP-Link non-Matter devices with third-party Matter ecosystems. That describes the documented product roles, not a guarantee of compatibility with every device or region. Check the hardware version, regional availability, supported devices, and current firmware in the manufacturer’s documentation.
Do you need a separate hub?
Not necessarily. A compatible controller may already be built into a speaker, display, router, or other device. You need a separate hub only if your existing equipment does not provide the controller or other function your setup requires. For Thread devices, check specifically for a Thread-capable border router; for devices that do not natively support Matter, check whether a compatible bridge is needed.

Can a hub control devices without the internet?
Some Matter commands can be handled locally in applicable setups, without routing commands through Nest or the device maker’s cloud, according to Google Home’s Matter guidance. That does not establish that every device feature, automation, app function, or remote-control feature will work offline. Local control, cloud-dependent services, remote access, and internet service are separate considerations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check before choosing one?
- Choose the platform: Verify that the hub, app, and devices support the smart-home ecosystem you plan to use, such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings.
- Check device protocols and radios: Confirm support for the connections your devices actually use, such as Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or a device-specific link. Do not assume a hub supports every protocol.
- Verify Thread support separately: If you have Thread devices, check whether the product is a Thread border router, not merely a Matter controller.
- Check bridge needs: If you want to keep non-Matter devices, confirm that the hub bridges those exact devices into your intended ecosystem.
- Review local and remote features: Find out which controls work locally and which depend on cloud services, internet access, or a remote-access feature.
- Confirm the exact model and setup: Check regional compatibility, hardware version, firmware requirements, and the manufacturer’s current list of supported devices.
Compatibility and supported features can change as manufacturers update products and firmware, so verify the current documentation for your region before buying or changing your setup. TP-Link’s Matter product information is one example of vendor documentation that identifies supported products and considerations.
