Budget Direct offers a renters contents policy for Australian tenants who want to insure their belongings, not the building they rent. Its published summary includes legal liability, temporary accommodation and limited cover for contents away from home; flood cover is described as optional. Whether it suits you depends on your belongings, the applicable limits and excess, and the terms on your quote and policy documents—not on the advertised discount alone.

Do I need contents insurance as a renter?

You may want contents insurance if you would struggle to replace your belongings after an insured loss. Budget Direct says renters do not need to insure the building they rent; that is the landlord’s responsibility. The policy is intended for a tenant’s own contents, including furniture and furnishings, electrical appliances, kitchenware, clothing and shoes, and some valuables subject to limits. It also lists fitted carpets and rugs, and internal blinds, curtains and window coverings.

It may be relevant whether you have just moved into a rental, live with a partner, are house-sitting long-term or are renting temporarily while your home is renovated. The deciding question is what it would cost to replace the contents you own and whether the policy’s covered events and limits match your circumstances. Budget Direct’s renters insurance page explains its intended audience and cover summary.

Does renters insurance cover my landlord’s building?

No: Budget Direct describes this as contents insurance for renters, not insurance for the rental building. The landlord is responsible for insuring the building. Check your lease and speak with your landlord or property manager if you are unsure who is responsible for a particular fixture or item; do not assume that the contents policy covers the building.

What does Budget Direct contents insurance cover?

Budget Direct’s live renters page lists the following benefits. These are headline summaries, not a substitute for the policy wording, any applicable Supplementary PDS (SPDS), and your certificate of insurance, which set the operative terms and limits.

Benefit What Budget Direct’s summary says
Temporary accommodation If an insured event makes the rental unliveable, it may pay additional accommodation costs above your usual rent for your family and pets, up to 10% of the contents sum insured. The benefit is capped at a maximum of one year or until the limit is reached.
Legal liability Up to $20 million for death or physical injury to other people, or loss or damage to another person’s property caused by an accident.
Contents away from home Contents may be covered for up to 90 days away from the insured home, subject to covered-event conditions in the PDS and a limit of up to 20% of the sum insured.
Replacement of locks Up to $1,000 for stolen keys, locks and key codes.
Unattached equipment Up to $500 for loss or damage to unattached equipment or accessories, with examples relating to vehicles, watercraft, trailers and caravans.
Debris removal and storage The summary describes removal and disposal of damaged contents and storage of undamaged contents while the rented home is repaired.

Budget Direct’s general contents cover explainer notes that categories of contents can have item or total limits, and some items may need to be specified. Check the current wording and your certificate for the limit that applies to each valuable or category you own; do not assume the headline sum insured overrides sub-limits.

Which events are covered, and what is optional?

Budget Direct’s general coverage explainer lists storm, including cyclone, and rainwater; fire; theft or attempted theft; escape of liquid; lightning; impact; breakage of specified glass, ceramic or sanitary fixtures; malicious damage, vandalism, riot or civil commotion; explosion; and earthquake or tsunami. The explainer presents flood cover as optional, so do not assume it is part of a quote unless the quote and policy documents confirm it.

The renters page names three optional extensions:

  • Accidental Damage Cover: described as cover for sudden, unintended and unexpected damage, with examples including spilling wine on a couch or dropping a vase.
  • Motor Burnout Cover: described as applying to electric motors under ten years old damaged by electric current or a power surge.
  • Commercial Storage Cover: listed as an optional extension; check the policy documents for its scope and conditions.

Eligibility, exclusions and limits for these options are governed by the applicable PDS or SPDS. Budget Direct’s coverage explainer gives examples of common exclusions, including pre-existing damage, leaking showers, lack of maintenance, vermin and insect damage, faulty workmanship and chemical damage. It also warns that tenant-caused loss may be excluded unless relevant optional cover applies. These are examples from a general explainer, not a definitive interpretation of every renters contents claim; confirm the wording that applies to your policy.

How much contents insurance do I need?

Estimate what it would cost to replace your belongings now, rather than adding up what you originally paid. Budget Direct recommends using replacement cost and provides a contents calculator on its renters page. Work room by room and include everyday items as well as furniture and appliances: smaller possessions can add up. A written inventory with replacement estimates can help you avoid overlooking items; keep it for your own records, not as a substitute for checking policy limits.

After estimating the total, check whether valuables or other categories have individual or combined limits, and whether any item needs to be specified. A sum insured that looks adequate in aggregate may not cover a particular high-value item in full if a sub-limit applies.

What excess will I have to pay?

The exact excess is not established by Budget Direct’s public summary. Check the quote and certificate for the excess that applies to your chosen cover, and confirm whether different excesses or conditions apply to particular claims. The renters page says choosing a higher excess or paying annually may reduce the cost, but the saving depends on your quote. A higher excess lowers the amount you pay for the policy only if the quoted premium changes; it also means you would pay more yourself when making a claim.

How much does it cost, and is it good value?

Budget Direct advertises a 15% discount on the first year for a new policy bought online, subject to conditions. That is an introductory discount, not a quote or evidence that the policy is cheaper than alternatives. Premiums depend on the applicant and selected cover, and the available published information does not establish that this policy is the cheapest or best option.

Compare like for like, including the contents sum insured, insured events and treatment of flood, category limits, away-from-home cover, temporary accommodation, optional extensions, excess and premium. Read the renewal price and discount conditions as well as the first-year figure before deciding.

Which policy documents should I check?

Auto & General’s official document index identifies a Budget Direct Home Insurance PDS applying to new policies quoted on or after 21 September 2023 and renewals on or after 29 October 2023. It also lists a June 2026 SPDS applying to new quotes on or after 25 June 2026 and renewals on or after 2 August 2026. Those dates determine which documents the index says may apply; check your own quote date, certificate and policy documents to identify the wording relevant to you. Confirm cover, exclusions, limits and excess in those documents rather than relying on a web-page summary.
