On TVs and audio equipment, the label often refers to an optical or digital coaxial S/PDIF connection. These ports use different cables, so check both the label and the shape of the port before connecting anything.
What does “digital audio socket” mean?
It is a general term for a device’s digital audio input or output—not one specific connector. Consumer devices may label a port S/PDIF, Digital Audio, Optical Audio, TOSLINK or Digital Coaxial. Philips lists these labels for S/PDIF jacks on TVs and external audio devices in its support guidance.

S/PDIF refers to the digital audio interface; TOSLINK refers to the optical connection used to carry it. They are related terms, but they are not interchangeable: a device can have an S/PDIF connection over optical fiber or over coaxial cable.
How to identify the socket
Optical (TOSLINK)
An optical port carries the digital audio signal through a fiber-optic cable. Sony describes this connection as using a fiber-optic cable in its digital optical audio guidance. Look for an optical or TOSLINK label and a port shaped for an optical cable plug. Use an optical/TOSLINK cable when both devices have matching optical ports.
#1 Best Overall
- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
Digital coaxial
A digital coaxial port uses an RCA-type connector and a suitable coaxial cable. Look for a “Digital Coaxial” label; do not assume that every RCA-shaped jack is a digital audio port, since the label and device manual matter. Use a digital coaxial cable when both devices have matching digital coaxial ports.
How to connect two devices
- Check the source device. Find its digital audio output and note whether it is labeled optical/TOSLINK or digital coaxial.
- Check the receiving device. Find a matching digital audio input. A port’s shape alone is not enough to establish what audio formats or functions it supports.
- Choose the matching cable. Use an optical/TOSLINK cable for optical ports, or a digital coaxial cable for digital coaxial ports.
- Set the audio output if needed. Consult both devices’ manuals for model-specific connection steps, output settings and supported formats.
If one device has optical output and the other has digital coaxial input, or the reverse, a cable alone will not make them compatible. You need an optical-to-coaxial or coaxial-to-optical signal converter appropriate to the direction of the connection. Philips also describes using a digital-to-analog converter when connecting a digital output to equipment with analog-only inputs; that is a different conversion task.

- Please REMOVE the end protective caps before using the cable.
- IN THE BOX: 6-foot digital optical audio Toslink cable.
- CLEAR AUDIO: Multi-channel, fiber-optic digital audio output; corrosion resistant gold-plated connectors and buffer tubing for optimal signal transfer.
- DURABLE: Lightweight, flexible cable with a rugged PVC exterior and removable rubber tips that protect the cable when not plugged in; remove before using.
- CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.
Optical or coaxial: which should you use?
| Consideration | Optical | Digital coaxial |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Fiber-optic cable and optical/TOSLINK ports | RCA-type connector and suitable coaxial cable |
| Cable to use | Optical/TOSLINK cable | Digital coaxial cable |
| Best first check | Confirm that both devices have matching optical ports | Confirm that both devices have matching digital coaxial ports |
| Formats and settings | Check the manuals for both devices | Check the manuals for both devices |
Choose based on the ports both devices actually have, practical cable routing and the formats those particular devices support. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that one connection universally sounds better, or that every digital audio socket supports the same formats.

Why device labels and manuals matter
Labels are useful clues, but product behavior varies by model. Philips’ connection advice is presented for specific listed TV models, and Sony’s comparison article was last modified on May 25, 2022. For a specific TV, receiver, soundbar or other device, use its manual to confirm whether the port is an input or output, which formats it supports and which settings to select.

As broader standards context, ISO/IEC 16500-4:1999 covers physical delivery media including coaxial cable and fiber in generic digital audiovisual systems; ISO says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2021. That standard is not a consumer definition of “digital audio socket.” An IEC 60958-1:2021 catalog excerpt also describes digital audio interface requirements and equipment labeling, but the accessible page is a secondary catalog rather than an IEC source.
