Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described a Gen-10 “family of devices,” said the company would have a “great console first,” and noted that many players are on the go. Those comments make a portable device a reasonable possibility, but they do not confirm one. Microsoft officially describes Project Helix as its next-generation console, with alpha hardware planned for developers beginning in 2027—not as a handheld with a retail release date.
What prompted the Xbox handheld headlines?
In remarks from an October 2026 internal town hall reported by Windows Central, Sharma outlined a broader hardware strategy: “We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10. There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go. There are some things that we are the best in the world to manufacture, and there are other things that we will partner on.” She added that Xbox would share more as its plans develop. Windows Central reported the comments on October 6, 2026, saying its transcript was shared with the outlet and verified by trusted sources; this was not an official public transcript.

The wording is suggestive, not a product announcement. “Players on the go” could refer to portable hardware, and Sharma said Xbox expects to manufacture some devices and partner on others. But she did not name a handheld, manufacturer, or product. ComicBook.com’s October 8, 2026 coverage likewise notes that no handheld was officially announced.

Is Project Helix a handheld?
No. In its March 11, 2026 announcement, Microsoft described Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console. Xbox VP Jason Ronald said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” The official description does not identify Helix as a handheld or provide handheld specifications. Xbox Wire’s Project Helix announcement is the clearest official statement of what the name refers to.

When is the next Xbox coming out?
Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date for Project Helix in the cited official material. Xbox says it plans to begin shipping alpha versions of the hardware to developers in 2027. That is a development milestone, not a date when consumers can buy the console. The announcement also does not state a price.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally the new Xbox handheld?
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is a real handheld gaming device in the Xbox ecosystem, but it is not identified as Project Helix. Xbox says an early version of its Windows gaming experience debuted on ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. That places the device in the existing portable Xbox experience; it does not establish a new first-party Xbox handheld or confirm ASUS as a future Helix hardware partner. Details such as current regional availability and pricing depend on the model and market.
