A pause at the October Federal Reserve meeting would stop one rate decision, not reverse the direction of policy. That distinction helps explain why Bitcoin fell below $81,000 on Oct. 8, 2026, even though investors were reported to expect no hike that month. CryptoSlate put the intraday low near $80,800 and listed several pressures on the market that day. None has been established as the cause of the drop, and the reporting does not reconstruct the intraday sequence.
What happened to Bitcoin on Oct. 8
CryptoSlate reported that Bitcoin broke below $81,000 on Oct. 8, 2026, with an intraday low near $80,800. That is one timestamped report, not a live or closing price. The same report gave market readings for the day that frame the pressure around the move.

A pause is one meeting, not a change in direction
A hold at the October meeting would leave rates unchanged for that decision. It would not, by itself, remove the expectation that policy stays restrictive. For markets, the more important question is the path: whether officials are finished raising rates or expect more increases.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
AP’s Oct. 7 account of the September minutes reported that most officials expected another rate increase would likely be needed this year to deal with persistent inflation. Investors were reported to expect an October hold and a possible increase in December. Reuters reported on Sept. 30 that futures put the chance of an October hike at about one in three, while still pricing a December hike. That is a Sept. 30 snapshot, and pricing can change quickly.
The tone of the Fed’s messaging is equally important. AP quoted Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the news conference after the Sept. 15–16, 2026 meeting: “The plain fact is that inflation is too high and has been for too long.”

Inflation came in softer than expected but stayed above target
Reuters reported that August PCE inflation ran at 3.4% year over year, below the 3.7% economists had expected. That softer reading is the data that made an October pause look more likely. The figure remained above the Fed’s 2% target. AP’s account of August inflation put the overall rate at 3.4% and core at 3%, and described inflation as still elevated against that target.

How the Oct. 8 pressures reached Bitcoin
CryptoSlate linked the decline to several pressures. Each is a mechanism that can weigh on Bitcoin; none has been shown to be the trigger.
Treasury yields
When government bonds pay more, investors can earn a higher return without taking crypto risk, which makes holding an asset that pays no yield more costly. The 2-year yield at 4.821% and the 10-year at 5.305% on Oct. 8 show that yields were high across the curve. Coinbase Institutional had already noted in September that the 10-year yield was above 5%, so this pressure was not new that week.

Oil and inflation expectations
Brent crude at $104.87 on Oct. 8 raises the risk that energy costs push inflation back up. In this framing, oil matters mainly through the rate outlook: higher energy prices can revive inflation concern and extend the period in which officials keep policy tight.
Thin spot demand
Glassnode data, as reported by CryptoSlate, put combined spot-exchange and U.S. spot ETF volume near $6.8 billion per day as of Oct. 7, 2026. That was below roughly 90% of the readings recorded since January 2024. When volume is that light, the market has less capacity to absorb sellers without a larger price move. The comparison describes relative thinness, not a forecast.

Forced long liquidations
CoinGlass data, as reported by CryptoSlate on Oct. 8, showed more than $1 billion in liquidations over 24 hours, including $930 million in long positions. A liquidation is a forced close of a leveraged position. When traders betting on higher prices are closed out automatically, their forced sales add to downward pressure. That total is a 24-hour figure, not a timed breakdown of the move below $81,000.

Coinbase Institutional’s weekly note of Sept. 18, 2026, titled “Weekly: FOMC Fallout,” described Bitcoin initially outperforming after the FOMC statement, then lagging once energy-market developments changed the macro response. The same note reported that spot ETF flows had turned to outflows after a strong early-September stretch. These are September observations, not Oct. 8 data. They show that a policy announcement can be followed by a different market story within days, which is why one decision rarely settles the direction for crypto.
Three axes that explain why a hold may not be enough
Three comparisons separate what a pause changes from what it leaves unresolved.

What the reporting does not establish
- The intraday sequence. Whether liquidations led the drop below $81,000 or followed it cannot be settled from the reporting. CryptoSlate itself said that would require intraday spot-flow and liquidation data.
- Liquidation zones. The zones CryptoSlate discussed are modeled positioning estimates, not observed liquidation levels.
- Vendor measures. The Glassnode and CoinGlass figures are cited through CryptoSlate and have not been checked against the underlying vendor reports.
- Fed text. This article relies on press accounts of the September minutes and the Sept. 15–16 news conference, not the Federal Reserve’s published documents.
- Timing. Yields, crude, futures odds, and the Bitcoin level are dated snapshots. As of this writing, the outcome of the October meeting has not been reported in the sources cited.
Levels and signals to watch
CryptoSlate’s technical framing names a $85,500 reclaim level and a $75,000 liquidation zone. These are conditional scenario thresholds in that report, not forecasts of where Bitcoin will trade.
The following signals would show whether the pressure is easing or widening:
Quick Recap
- The October statement and press conference. Look for whether officials keep a December increase open or describe the hold as the end of tightening.
- The 2-year yield. It tends to track the expected policy path more closely than the 10-year. A decline from its Oct. 8 level would suggest markets are pricing fewer increases.
- Brent crude. A sustained move below its Oct. 8 level would ease the oil-inflation channel.
- Spot and ETF volume. A rise in combined spot-exchange and ETF volume would indicate better absorption of selling.
- ETF flows. Whether the outflows reported in September reverse.
- Daily liquidations. Whether long liquidations fall back from the Oct. 8 total.
