Yes—Walmart was listed on a 2018 U.S. patent application for an unmanned vehicle system designed to pollinate crops. It describes a vehicle that transfers pollen and uses a sensor to check whether pollen reached a target flower. The published application is listed as abandoned, and it does not show that Walmart built or deployed the system.
What did Walmart patent?
The application, US20180065749A1, is titled “Systems and methods for pollinating crops via unmanned vehicles.” Its record lists Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. as the original assignee and Walmart Apollo LLC as the current assignee, while cautioning that listed assignee information may be inaccurate.

The detailed description includes unmanned aerial vehicles as well as other embodiments, and discusses applicators such as bristles, pads, cloths, or spreaders. It also describes sensors, computing controls, and optional docking or charging arrangements. “Robot bees” is shorthand: the patent title describes crop-pollination vehicles, not necessarily bee-shaped machines.
Does the patent mean Walmart built or deployed robot bees?
No. A patent application documents a proposed invention; by itself, it is not evidence that a company manufactured, tested, or put the system into service. The patent record does not establish a Walmart product or operational deployment. The World Economic Forum reported on March 19, 2018, that Walmart had not publicly commented on the patents as of that date; that is a time-specific account, not a statement about the company’s current position. How does this proposal fit with other pollination robots?
Walmart’s application is one patent disclosure, not evidence that its proposed system was proven in the field. Separately, a 2018 paper by Nicholas Ohi and coauthors described BrambleBee, an autonomous precision-pollination robot designed and under development for bramble plants in a greenhouse. That is research context, not a Walmart project or proof of commercial deployment. (BrambleBee paper)

In a 2018 peer-reviewed commentary, Simon G. Potts and coauthors argued that robotic crop pollination was not then an efficient or economically viable substitute for bees, and raised environmental, ecosystem, biodiversity, and food-security concerns. Their assessment was published in 2018; it was not a field test of Walmart’s design or a current consensus statement. (Potts et al.)

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
- Established: a U.S. patent application was published in 2018, describing unmanned vehicles that transfer pollen and use sensors to check application.
- Not established: that Walmart made, tested, or deployed the proposed system, or that it was a bee-shaped machine.
- Not provided by these sources: comparable cost, throughput, or field-performance measurements for Walmart’s system. The patent disclosure cannot support a numerical ranking against bees or other pollination methods.
