It is designed for cabin emergencies, not for spacewalks. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program press kit now includes a SpaceX suit section and image captions, so “photos are coming soon” is historical headline language rather than a current promise.
What does Elon Musk’s SpaceX spacesuit look like?
The suit has a streamlined, close-fitting design intended for use inside Dragon, rather than the bulky appearance associated with suits built for work outside a spacecraft. Elon Musk described the design challenge in an Instagram post quoted by WIRED’s 2017 reveal coverage: “Was incredibly hard to balance aesthetics and function,” followed by “Easy to do either separately.”

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program Press Kit describes the suit’s purpose and connection to Dragon, while its suit section and captions provide current NASA imagery. The available descriptions do not establish a full technical specification or make the suit’s appearance evidence of its performance.
What is the SpaceX suit for?
SpaceX designed the suit for astronauts to wear inside Dragon during travel to and from the ISS. NASA says each passenger’s suit is custom-made and is intended to protect against potential cabin depressurization. It is therefore flight safety equipment for the spacecraft’s cabin environment, not a suit for working in open space.

NASA describes the interface this way: “A single connection point on the suit’s thigh attaches life support systems, including air and power connections.” That connection links the wearer to Dragon’s systems; it should not be confused with an independent backpack life-support system.
Is the SpaceX suit for spacewalks?
No. The suit revealed in 2017 is an intravehicular suit, meaning it is worn inside the spacecraft. It is not the extravehicular activity (EVA) suit astronauts need to leave a vehicle and work in space.

SpaceX later developed a separate EVA suit by upgrading its Dragon cabin suit. NASA’s Office of Inspector General reports that an umbilical to Dragon provided life-support features for a spacewalk demonstration during Polaris Dawn in September 2024. The report describes an intended path toward future planetary surface operations; that intention is not evidence that the suit is qualified for lunar or Mars surface missions. See the NASA OIG report IG-26-006 for that later development.
How did NASA and SpaceX work together on the suit?
NASA did not design the suit. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program contracted with SpaceX to provide crew transportation, and NASA’s account identifies SpaceX as the suit’s designer. In 2014, NASA awarded Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contracts to SpaceX and Boeing. Dragon was developed in collaboration with the program; after the Demo-2 flight test and agency certification, SpaceX began regular crew rotations. Crew-1 launched on November 15, 2020.

NASA says Dragon can carry up to seven passengers, while NASA missions carry up to four astronauts. Those are spacecraft capacity figures, not suit specifications. The distinction matters: the cabin suit is custom-made for its wearer, but the number of people Dragon can carry says nothing about the suit’s capabilities.
