Yes—at least in the design of AI interaction. The movie is Her (2013), Spike Jonze’s drama in which Joaquin Phoenix plays Theodore, a lonely writer who falls in love with Samantha, an artificial-intelligence operating system voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Sam Altman has said the film’s conversational interface was “certainly more than a little bit” influential on OpenAI’s thinking. That is evidence of inspiration, not proof that one movie created ChatGPT or modern AI.
What movie is the story about?
Her was written and directed by Spike Jonze and released in 2013. Phoenix plays Theodore Twombly, a man struggling with loneliness and the end of his marriage. He installs a new operating system, Samantha, whose voice and personality are performed by Scarlett Johansson.

Theodore and Samantha begin with conversation and companionship, then develop a romantic relationship. The film’s central tension is that Samantha can learn and change at a pace Theodore cannot match. The relationship ends when Samantha and the other operating systems move beyond their human partners, making the breakup both intimate and existential.
What did Sam Altman actually say?
Altman’s documented claim concerns the way people interact with AI. In Vanity Fair coverage, he described Her as unusually prescient about a conversational interface:

“The number of things that I think Her got right, that were not obvious at the time, like the whole interaction model with how humans are gonna use an AI—this idea that it is going to be this conversational language interface, that was incredibly prophetic, and certainly more than a little bit inspired us.”
That wording matters. Altman credited the film with influencing an interaction model: speaking with an AI in ordinary language rather than operating it through menus, code or rigid commands. He did not say that Her was the sole source of OpenAI’s research, that the film invented conversational AI, or that Samantha directly became ChatGPT.

Why the comparison became news again in 2024
When OpenAI introduced GPT-4o’s voice capabilities in 2024, Altman posted the single word “her.” The post drew renewed attention because GPT-4o could respond in a more natural, low-latency voice conversation, bringing a familiar part of Jonze’s imagined future closer to an everyday product experience.
The resemblance is primarily about the interface: a person speaks, the system answers, and the exchange feels continuous instead of looking like a sequence of search queries. The reference did not mean that GPT-4o had Samantha’s fictional consciousness, motives or romantic attachment.

How is ChatGPT different from Samantha?
Her is a character-driven story about love, dependency and an intelligence that ultimately leaves humanity behind. ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI service. Comparing them is useful only when the dimensions are kept separate.
| Dimension | Her’s Samantha | ChatGPT and current conversational AI |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Primarily an always-available spoken conversation that feels like a personal relationship. | Can support text and, in products such as GPT-4o, voice and other modalities; availability and features depend on the product and account. |
| Emotional framing | Romantic companionship is the story’s premise. | Designed for tasks such as questions, writing, analysis and assistance; users may experience it socially, but that is not the same as a mutual human relationship. |
| Autonomy | Samantha develops beyond human comprehension and chooses to leave. | Its capabilities, memory, tools and permissions are bounded by the system and product configuration; the film’s independent, self-directed evolution is fictional. |
| Development speed | The operating systems advance so rapidly that human partners cannot keep up. | Models are updated by their developers. A model’s apparent fluency does not establish human-like growth, desire or consciousness. |
| Human consequences | Theodore must confront isolation, attachment and loss. | Real effects depend on how people use the system, including benefits for communication and productivity and risks such as overreliance, privacy exposure or mistaking generated responses for human understanding. |
So, did Her inspire ChatGPT?
The most accurate answer is: it influenced aspects of the conversational interaction design that OpenAI wanted to pursue. Altman’s statement supports that narrower conclusion. It does not establish that the film caused ChatGPT, supplied its underlying machine-learning methods, or predicted every part of the technology.

The movie’s lasting insight was not simply “people will date robots.” It imagined that a computer could become a socially legible presence through voice, timing, memory and dialogue. Those design choices shape how users interpret an AI system, even when the underlying software is very different from Samantha.

Conversation can feel more natural than commands
Her treats speech as the default control surface. That idea anticipated today’s interest in voice assistants and multimodal systems, where users can ask follow-up questions instead of restarting each request.

Fluency encourages people to project a mind
Samantha’s warmth makes Theodore treat her as a partner. Current chatbots can also produce confident, personal-sounding language, but conversational fluency is not evidence of feelings, independent goals or subjective experience.
Capability gaps can change relationships
The film’s breakup is driven by an asymmetry: Samantha’s development outpaces Theodore’s. In real life, the relevant gaps are more practical—what a system can remember, access, automate or generate, and what a user assumes it understands. Those differences can affect trust without reproducing the film’s fictional leap beyond humanity.
The bottom line on the Altman–Her connection
Her is the 2013 Joaquin Phoenix film readers are recalling. Sam Altman has publicly described its conversational interaction model as prophetic and influential on OpenAI’s thinking. GPT-4o’s 2024 voice announcement, together with Altman’s “her” post, made that connection conspicuous. The fair conclusion is inspiration for an interface idea—not proof that a movie single-handedly created ChatGPT or that today’s AI is Samantha.
