Did Meta Decline Anthropic’s Request for More Compute? What’s Confirmed

The alleged earlier request from Dario Amodei to Meta’s Alexandr Wang is unverified. Later reports describe preliminary talks about a possible compute lease, not a confirmed deal or refusal.

The reported conversation between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Meta AI chief Alexandr Wang—and an alleged refusal by Meta—are not confirmed by the sources reviewed. Separate reports published in July 2026 said Anthropic had proposed a possible compute lease to Meta in June, but the talks were preliminary and no agreement was confirmed. Those reports do not establish that the earlier conversation happened.

What is known about the alleged conversation?

The claim that Amodei spoke with Wang earlier in 2026 seeking computing capacity, and that Meta declined, is not corroborated by the reports available here. A later report about lease discussions between Anthropic and Meta is a separate account; it cannot confirm the alleged private exchange or an earlier refusal.

That distinction matters: the reported June proposal concerned a potential lease, while the title’s claim describes an earlier conversation and a direct request. Neither company publicly confirmed the later talks in the accounts published July 17, 2026.

What did the July 2026 reports say?

Reuters: a possible lease, not a confirmed deal

Reuters reported that Anthropic proposed a potential compute lease to Meta in June and that Meta was considering it. The discussions were early and complicated, and Reuters cautioned that they might not result in an agreement. Its report said a possible arrangement could be worth up to $10 billion over two years; that was a reported potential value, not a signed contract or confirmed price. Reuters also said Anthropic declined to comment and Meta did not immediately respond. Reuters

Reuters described the talks as complicated in part because Meta did not already have a business selling its computing power. The report also mentioned proposed monthly payments and a possible early-exit provision, with terms still subject to change. Those details describe reported negotiations, not final terms. Reuters

CNN Newsource: discussions remained early

CNN Newsource also reported early discussions on July 17 and said a source characterized specific reported deal figures as speculative. CNN said both companies declined to comment. The account reported that Meta planned capital expenditures of $125 billion to $145 billion for 2026, with much of the spending directed toward infrastructure. That company-wide spending plan is context, not the value of a possible Anthropic lease. CNN Newsource

Why would Anthropic seek more compute?

Computing capacity supports two different needs: running models for customers and training new models. Axios reported on April 2, 2026, that Anthropic faced capacity constraints as customer demand rose. It also described a tension in the market: compute costs were falling while usage was increasing rapidly. That context helps explain why a company might seek additional capacity, but it is not evidence of a specific request to Wang. Axios

What had Meta said about leasing compute?

At Meta’s May 2026 annual shareholder meeting, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said companies were approaching Meta about buying access to its AI models or computing power. He said Meta had not sold capacity because it expected to use it itself, while adding that leasing could be an option if the company overbuilt. His remarks establish that Meta viewed leasing as a possibility; they do not show that Meta rejected Amodei or Anthropic. CNN Newsource

How to read the reports

  • Established in the cited accounts: Reuters reported a potential lease proposal in June and early talks; CNN Newsource separately described early discussions.
  • Not established: that Amodei spoke with Wang earlier in the year, that the alleged conversation was a request for compute, or that Meta declined such a request.
  • Still uncertain: whether the separate lease talks would produce a deal, and what any final terms would be.

The most accurate conclusion is therefore narrower than the headline claim: Anthropic and Meta were reportedly in preliminary discussions about a possible compute lease, but the alleged earlier Amodei–Wang exchange and refusal remain unverified.
