A 2026 study reports magnetic evidence preserved in ancient inclusions inside the Antarctic meteorite DOM 08006. The findings suggest a magnetic field existed in the solar nebula while material was still accreting onto the young Sun. That field may have helped move gas through the disk, alongside gravity; it does not show that magnetism alone formed the Sun or planets.
What the new meteorite evidence suggests
The evidence comes from calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions, or CAIs, in DOM 08006. These inclusions formed very early in solar-system history and can preserve clues about the conditions around them. The study’s paleomagnetic analysis interprets their magnetic record as evidence that a field existed in the nascent solar nebula during an accretion stage, when the disk was feeding material toward the protostar. The primary study record describes the inferred field as consistent with magnetic fields capable of playing a key role in disk accretion.

Paleomagnetism works by measuring magnetic signals retained in rocks or minerals. Researchers use those signals to infer the magnetic field present when the material formed or cooled. Because no one can directly observe the environment in which the Sun was born, primitive meteorites offer a surviving record that can help constrain early nebular conditions. A review of meteorite paleomagnetism explains how such measurements help trace field strengths and the solar nebula’s evolution. Read the 2020 review.
The available primary-study record does not establish an exact field-strength value and uncertainty that can be safely quoted here. The result is therefore best understood qualitatively: the researchers report evidence for a nebular field and interpret it as relevant to accretion, rather than providing a number that can be compared directly with other meteorite records.

How this fits the usual account of solar-system formation
The finding adds a magnetic dimension to the standard broad sequence; it does not replace that sequence. NASA describes the solar system as beginning with a collapsing molecular cloud. As the cloud contracted, rotation flattened infalling material into a disk. Most material gathered at the center to form the young Sun, while material left in the disk collided and accumulated into larger bodies, eventually including planets. NASA’s account of solar-system formation explains this overview.
Gravity remains central to the collapse and accumulation of matter. The new result points to magnetism as another possible influence on what happened inside the disk: magnetic forces can help transport angular momentum and gas, potentially aiding the flow of disk material inward toward the young Sun. MIT News coverage of the study describes the interpretation as evidence that magnetism likely played a role in this process. Read MIT News’ report.

What the study does—and does not—establish
- It supports: the presence of a magnetic field in the early solar nebula, as interpreted from preserved magnetic signals in CAIs from DOM 08006.
- It makes plausible: a contribution from magnetic forces to gas transport and disk accretion during the young system’s early evolution.
- It does not prove: that magnetism alone caused the Sun to form, that gravity was unimportant, or that this result supplies a complete explanation for how planets formed.
The distinction matters: evidence that a field existed is not the same as proof that it dominated the system’s formation. The study strengthens the case for including magnetic conditions alongside gravity in models of the early disk, while leaving the overall formation story grounded in cloud collapse, disk formation, and accumulation of material.
Why a meteorite can reveal conditions around the young Sun
Direct observations of the Sun’s birth environment are impossible because that event occurred long before humans could observe it. Researchers instead examine primitive solar-system material that survived from early times. The DOM 08006 CAIs are useful because their retained magnetic record offers a physical clue about the field in the nebula during their formation or cooling. Other evidence, including astronomical observations and models, addresses different aspects or eras of disk evolution; this study’s distinctive contribution is its early-stage meteorite record.
