Did High-School Students Really Develop an Antivenom? What the 2013 Lab Study Found

In 2013, Laguna Beach High School students helped test toxin-binding nanoparticles against Mozambique spitting cobra venom. The lab results pointed to a possible synthetic antivenom, not a patient-ready treatment.

Laguna Beach High School students helped create and test nanoparticles that bound toxins from Mozambique spitting cobra venom in laboratory experiments. The 2013 results suggested a possible synthetic antivenom approach—but did not establish a treatment tested in patients or approved for medical use.

What did the students make?

In a project led by chemistry teacher Steven Sogo, nine students at Laguna Beach High School in California worked on molecularly imprinted polyacrylamide nanoparticles. The work was reported in 2013 by Chemistry World.

The particles were designed to bind cytotoxins in Mozambique spitting cobra venom, from Naja mossambica mossambica. The underlying paper, published in Chemical Communications, is titled “Molecularly-imprinted nanoparticles that recognize Naja mossambica cytotoxins: binding studies and biological effects.” Its abstract reports avid and specific binding and neutralization of cytotoxin activity. The PubMed abstract concludes that the findings “hold promise for the development of a synthetic antivenom”—a statement about research potential, not proof of a usable medicine.

How did molecular imprinting work?

Molecular imprinting uses a target molecule as a temporary template while a polymer forms around it. Once the template is removed, the polymer is left with spaces shaped to bind molecules like the original target.

Helps prevent hypothermia and shock by retaining of a user's body heat. our blankets can help block rain, snow, and moisture to keep you dry in damp, wet, cold, rainy environments
  1. Choose the target: The project focused on cobra venom cytotoxins.
  2. Form the polymer: Students designed mixtures of acrylamide monomers intended to interact with the toxins while the material polymerized.
  3. Remove the templates: Dialysis removed the toxins, leaving nanoparticles with complementary binding cavities.
  4. Test binding and biological activity: The paper abstract reports toxin binding and neutralization; the contemporary account describes in-vitro tests in which the particles prevented toxin-associated cellular damage.

The accessible abstract and report do not establish detailed concentrations, an efficacy rate, comprehensive safety results, or performance in animals or people. Those details should not be inferred from the reported laboratory finding.

Why is this not a patient-ready antivenom?

The students tested a candidate toxin-binding material in vitro: that is, in laboratory experiments outside a living patient. The reported results do not show that the particles safely treat snakebite in animals or humans, and the reviewed sources do not report clinical trials or regulatory approval for them.

That distinction matters because a material that binds a toxin in a lab is not automatically a safe, effective treatment. A medical antivenom must work in the body and meet the relevant requirements for clinical use. A 2026 review describes plasma-derived immunoglobulins and derivatives, including antibody fragments, as the established approved antivenom treatment approach; it discusses nanoparticle strategies as research. The review does not make the student-developed particles an available alternative.

How does the nanoparticle idea compare with established antivenom?

Approach What binds venom toxins Evidence and status Target breadth
Established plasma-derived antivenom Immunoglobulins or their derivatives, such as antibody fragments Described in the 2026 review as the established approved treatment approach Depends on the antivenom; the reviewed sources do not provide a directly comparable breadth measure
Laguna Beach student nanoparticle project Engineered cavities in molecularly imprinted polyacrylamide 2013 in-vitro research; the reviewed sources do not report clinical trials or regulatory approval Focused on cytotoxins from Mozambique spitting cobra venom

Conventional antivenoms are commonly made by immunizing animals with venom and collecting antibodies from serum, as the 2013 report explains. The sources do not establish comparative efficacy or cost figures for that approach and the student particles, so a numerical comparison would be unwarranted.

What does the project show about student research?

The project is a notable example of high-school students contributing to a defined research question: whether an engineered polymer could recognize and neutralize particular venom toxins. It is not evidence that students produced a clinical antivenom.

Other student and university projects illustrate the range of work in this field, but they are separate efforts. The University of Costa Rica and Instituto Clodomiro Picado describe university thesis projects contributing to antivenom production research. The institution reports average production of 8,000 vials per year in the 1970s and production of 110,000 vials in 2016; those are historical institutional figures, not current output. Its history page provides that account.

In a different line of research, Southern Illinois University Carbondale reported in 2018 on undergraduate Helen Mihm’s work with faculty member Keith Gagnon exploring synthetic DNA aptamers as possible binders for snake venom toxins. That work does not establish aptamers as clinical antivenom. The university’s report describes the project.

Antivenom research also has a longer history outside snakebite treatment. Arizona State University’s 2026 feature says professor Herbert Stahnke had developed a scorpion antivenom by 1948, that supplies of the historical product were depleted around 2004, and that a private-company product is used today. This is separate from the 2013 high-school nanoparticle study. ASU’s historical feature covers that work.
