Ars Technica reported in September 2026 that Relapse works on PS5 firmware up to version 13.6. That compatibility claim is the concrete development; the AI attribution and the scale of any “surge” remain unverified.
What is the reported PS5 exploit?
Ars Technica reported in September 2026 that Relapse works on PS5 firmware through version 13.6. This is a reported compatibility range, not an independent account of every exploit stage or proof that all consoles on those versions are affected. The available report does not establish broader compatibility. Ars Technica

Did AI find the PS5 jailbreak?
That has not been established. The reporting on Relapse does not identify AI as its origin, and the available material does not quantify an increase in PS5 jailbreak activity. There is therefore no substantiated basis here for treating AI as the cause of a “surge.”

There is relevant general context, but it is not event-specific evidence. OpenAI said on September 1, 2026, that its Astra model can, with appropriate tools and access, find previously unknown security flaws and develop exploits across protected systems. That vendor-reported capability makes AI assistance in cybersecurity plausible in general; it does not show Astra, or any AI system, was used to develop Relapse. OpenAI: “Path to Astra”

A technical paper on the PS5 security landscape published by Hardwear.io in April 2026 is also background, not confirmation of AI involvement. Its indexed text did not return matches for “AI” or “artificial intelligence”; that search result alone cannot prove the full paper contains no relevant discussion. Hardwear.io
What does “works through firmware 13.6” mean?
It means the report attributes Relapse compatibility to PS5 system software versions up to 13.6. It does not, by itself, explain what conditions or steps are required, establish that every console on that firmware is vulnerable, or guarantee that a particular system can be jailbroken. The reported version range should not be read as a promise of compatibility beyond 13.6.

What has Sony said about security and reporting flaws?
Sony says it accepts product vulnerability reports and addresses them responsibly. Its product-security information also describes a security development lifecycle and links to a PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. These are official channels and practices; the available information does not show that the researchers behind Relapse used the bug bounty program. What do Sony’s PS5 software terms say?
Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement for Iceland says users may not use tools to bypass, disable, or circumvent PS5 encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms.
