What does the lawsuit allege?
Jane Doe’s September 2026 civil lawsuit alleges that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple men at Cornell’s Chi Phi house on October 19–20, 2024. The Associated Press reported that records filed in court described a university inquiry involving 50 interviews with 32 witnesses and 12 days of hearings. Those figures describe the inquiry’s scope, not proof of criminal guilt. Cornell’s FAQ, as quoted by The Cornell Daily Sun, says the university process uses university policies and standards and is distinct from the criminal justice system. Reporting on the FAQ says the Chi Phi chapter remains barred from campus; Cornell has not publicly provided a person-by-person account of findings or sanctions, citing privacy laws.

Criminal investigation
As of October 3, 2026, the Tompkins County district attorney had reopened the criminal investigation after the lawsuit was filed, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul had appointed state Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor. That is a status update, not a decision on charges or guilt.
