DFMI Explained: How MSI Installer Abuse Works—and How to Defend

DFMI is an open-source toolkit for abusing Windows Installer mechanisms. Here is what its three documented approaches mean and how to defend deployments.

DFMI is an open-source security toolkit that its maintainers describe as a way to deliver covert payloads through Windows Installer packages. It is not a Windows feature. Its documented approaches take advantage of Windows Installer’s legitimate CustomAction and transform mechanisms, which makes installer provenance and deployment controls central to the defense. The project says its intended use is authorized red-team engagements, penetration testing, and security research.

What DFMI is—and what it claims to do

The name expands to “Dont F(ool) My Installer.” The project describes DFMI as a suite for fileless execution or covert payload delivery using MSI files. DEF CON 34’s program listing, for its Aug. 7–8, 2026 session, summarizes the same three general approaches: modifying an MSI, supplying a transform, or creating a package from scratch. These are descriptions by the project and conference listing, not independently verified results. DFMI repository · DEF CON 34 program listing

“Fileless” should not be read as “invisible” or “leaves no artifacts.” The repository documents limitations including no direct AMSI/ETW bypass and no persistence mechanism. Those are project-reported characteristics; they do not establish how any particular security product will detect or handle a given installer.

Why Windows Installer custom actions matter

Windows Installer supports custom actions for legitimate installation tasks. Microsoft says they can launch executables, call DLL functions, execute script text, or defer actions during installation. Microsoft’s Custom Actions documentation notes: “Standard actions are sufficient to execute an installation in most cases.” Custom actions exist for cases where an installation needs behavior beyond the standard actions.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

DFMI’s significance is therefore not that MSI files are inherently malicious, but that a package can include additional behavior that a recipient or deployment system may not expect. The installation context and the trustworthiness of the package and any associated transform both matter.

How the three documented workflows differ

Workflow Project-described behavior Signature and policy caveat
Inject Adds a CustomAction to a copy of an existing MSI. The project says modifying a signed MSI invalidates its Authenticode signature; depending on policy, the changed package may produce an unknown-publisher warning.
Rogue MST Provides a separate transform to be applied alongside an unchanged MSI; Windows Installer merges the transform at installation time. The project says the transform is unsigned and strict transform policies may block it. A valid signature on the original MSI does not vouch for a separate transform.
Stub Creates a standalone MSI package from scratch. The project says the stub is unsigned and may be flagged in environments that enforce MSI signing.

The repository says inject and stub packages can be produced on Windows or Linux, while Rogue MST generation requires Windows because it uses the Windows Installer COM API. These are project documentation claims and could change as the repository evolves. DFMI repository

How to assess whether an MSI deployment is trustworthy

A signature check is useful, but it is not a complete provenance check—especially when a deployment includes a separate transform. Treat the package, its source, and any companion files as parts of one deployment decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Verify provenance. Obtain installers from an approved vendor or controlled internal repository. Confirm that the package is the expected release and that its signature and publisher match your organization’s requirements.
  • Protect internal distribution points. Restrict write access to software shares, package repositories, and deployment staging areas. Review who can publish or replace installers, and preserve an auditable change history.
  • Account for transforms. Identify whether an MST or other transform is being supplied with an MSI, who created it, and whether policy permits it. Do not infer that a separately supplied transform is trusted merely because the base MSI is signed.
  • Review installation behavior. For packages that warrant scrutiny, inspect their custom actions and compare them with the vendor’s documented installation behavior. Investigate unexpected executable, script, or DLL activity during deployment.
  • Control deployment paths and policy. Apply organizational policy to which users and systems may install MSI packages or transforms. Monitor software deployment locations and investigate unexpected installer execution or changes to approved packages.

These are defensive implications of the Windows Installer mechanism and DFMI’s documented workflows, not claims that a specific configuration or product was tested. Microsoft’s overview of custom actions is available in its Windows Installer documentation.
