DevVault: A Local Secret Manager and Runtime Environment Injector in Go

DevVault is described as a local Go CLI that stores development secrets in an encrypted SQLite vault and injects them into launched processes instead of writing a plaintext .env file. Its features and cryptographic settings are author-reported, not independently verified.

DevVault is described by its author as a local command-line tool for keeping development secrets out of plaintext .env files. Its advertised workflow stores values in a local SQLite vault, then injects them into a program launched with devvault run. That makes it a potentially useful local-development approach, but the available information is an author announcement—not an independent code review or security audit.

What DevVault is—and what it is meant to replace

In a September 23, 2026 announcement, Saravanakumar G described DevVault as an open-source Go CLI for managing local development secrets. Rather than writing API keys or database credentials to a plaintext .env file, the advertised approach is to save them in a local SQLite vault and supply them to a child process when launching a development command. This is a local workflow, not a hosted secrets service: the announcement describes local storage and process injection, not a central service for sharing secrets across a team. The announcement does not establish what happens to vault data in every operating-system or backup scenario.

How the advertised workflow works

  1. Set a secret: The author says devvault set KEY accepts the value through hidden terminal input, so the value is not displayed as ordinary typed text while entering it.
  2. Choose a profile: Profiles such as default, staging, and production are described as separate environments with independent salts.
  3. Run a program: With devvault run, the tool is said to decrypt values in memory and pass them to the launched child process as environment variables. The stated goal is to avoid generating a .env file for that run.

The announcement does not provide enough detail to establish exact command syntax for selecting profiles, handling an existing shell environment, or launching particular applications. Check the project documentation before relying on those details.

What security properties are reported

The announcement reports AES-256-GCM encryption and an Argon2id key-derivation configuration of 64 MB of memory, three iterations, and four threads. These are reported implementation settings, not evidence by themselves that the full system is secure. The repository and release page were not available for code inspection, and no independent audit or security review is established by the announcement.

Likewise, hidden input can reduce accidental exposure on screen, and avoiding a persistent plaintext .env file can remove one copy of a secret. Neither detail establishes protection against every way credentials may be exposed, such as a compromised device, a process with access to the child environment, or an insecure backup. The announcement does not document a complete threat model or recovery procedure.

Password Keeper Stick with Type-C Port, Password Storage Device, Offline Password Manager, Portable Password Organizer for Accounts, Banking & Login Information
  • Offline Local Storage for Privacy:This Password Keeper stores all your login credentials directly on the device, with no cloud or internet connection, helping reduce exposure to hacking and data breaches.
  • Full Control of Your Sensitive Data:Unlike cloud-based managers, this physical device keeps your passwords entirely under your control. Your information never leaves the device, and you won’t share it with third-party servers.
  • Built-in Device Password Protection:Add an extra layer of security with optional device password protection, helping prevent unauthorized access to your stored records if the device is misplaced.
  • Compact Hardware Vault for Credentials:A secure alternative to handwritten notes or spreadsheets, this portable device lets you store unique, complex passwords for all your accounts in one place.
  • Simple USB Type-C Access:Connect via the included USB Type-C cable to your laptop, phone, or standard 5V charger to view and navigate your passwords on the built-in screen, no internet required.

Other features the author lists

  • Git entropy scanner and pre-commit hook: Intended to flag likely secrets in staged files. The announcement does not specify detection coverage or false-positive rates; a scanner should not be treated as proof that a repository contains no credentials.
  • Encrypted export and import: The author describes a .dv format for moving or backing up vault data. The announcement does not establish recovery guarantees or the precise protections around exported files.
  • Operating systems: Windows, Linux, and macOS are listed as supported. Platform-specific behavior was not verified against the repository.

What to verify before adopting it

The announcement links to a GitHub repository and a v1.0.1 release, but those pages were not retrievable for verification. Therefore, v1.0.1 should not be assumed to be the current release, and the announced go install github.com/Saravanakumar2602/DevVault/cmd/devvault@latest command should be checked against current project instructions before use.

Is DevVault a fit for local development?

DevVault’s described purpose is clear: store secrets locally and inject them into a launched development process instead of keeping them in a plaintext .env file. That could suit an individual developer seeking this workflow, provided they first verify the current project, installation steps, and security behavior. The available announcement does not support treating DevVault as audited, currently maintained, or suitable for centralized team secrets management.
