Common approaches include gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), usually after sample preparation and extraction. There is no established consumer home test in the cited official methods.
A result showing a chemical is present is not, by itself, a finding that the drink is unsafe. The target substance, measured concentration, exposure and toxicological context all matter.

What does “plasticisers in drinks” mean?
Plasticisers are a broad group of substances used to make some materials more flexible. Phthalates are one class of plasticisers, not a synonym for all plasticisers. They have historically been used in PVC and some food-contact applications, but the substances and uses of interest vary. The European Commission’s coordinated control recommendation names both phthalate and non-phthalate plasticisers for migration analysis from selected food-contact materials: Commission Recommendation (EU) 2019/794.
A useful test request therefore names the target compounds and the question being asked: are those compounds present in the drink, or can they migrate from a particular container under specified conditions?

How are plasticisers detected in a drink?
Laboratory testing starts with a defined analyte list and a method suited to the drink’s ingredients and expected concentrations. The sample is prepared and extracted so the target chemicals can be separated from the beverage matrix and measured. A review of beverage and bottle methods describes liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, and microextraction approaches, followed by methods including GC-MS and liquid chromatography with different detectors. It does not establish one universally best method; suitability depends on the analytes, drink matrix and validation results. See the review record, “Phthalates in Beverages and Plastic Bottles: Sample Preparation and Determination”.
Controls that make a result more reliable
Contamination can occur during collection and laboratory handling, so a reliable method needs controls as well as an instrument. Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety describes adding deuterated internal standards before extraction, selecting a solvent according to sample type, and analyzing extracts by LC-MS/MS in multiple-reaction monitoring mode. It also advises avoiding plastic labware to reduce the risk of phthalate contamination. These are laboratory method controls, not instructions for home testing: Centre for Food Safety: testing method of phthalate.

- Quick Detection Time: Delivers accurate results in under two minutes by simply placing a drop of your drink on the test strip's designated areas without the need to stir or dip
For difficult matrices, the same government source notes that standard addition may be useful. A lab should be able to explain how its method performs in the particular beverage being tested, rather than relying only on a method validated for a different kind of sample. The European Commission’s food-contact laboratory guidelines emphasize analytical performance and method validation for migration compliance work: EURL-FCM technical guidelines.

| Test purpose | What is measured | What the result can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Direct beverage analysis | The specified target chemicals in a sample of the drink. | Whether and at what concentration the targets were measured in that sample, subject to the method’s performance and reporting limits. |
| Packaging migration analysis | Substances that migrate from a food-contact article into a food or food simulant under defined conditions. | The migration behavior under the test conditions; it is not a direct measurement of a particular retail drink. |
FDA chemistry guidance describes testing food-contact articles, such as beverage bottles, by filling them with a food simulant and analyzing the result. It also discusses mass spectrometry and gas or liquid chromatography for characterizing extractives: FDA chemistry recommendations for food-contact substances. ISO 177:2016 addresses the tendency of plasticisers to migrate from plastics into other materials or plastics in contact with them; it is not a consumer screening procedure for a drink. ISO says that edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2026 and remains current: ISO 177:2016.
Can you test a drink for phthalates at home?
The official methods described here use sample extraction, instrumental analysis and laboratory performance controls. They do not establish a validated consumer home test for phthalates in drinks. Generic water-quality strips or unspecified home kits should not be treated as phthalate tests.

What does a positive result mean for health?
A detected concentration establishes analytical presence in the tested sample; it does not by itself establish a health risk. Risk evaluation also requires information about exposure and the toxicological properties of the chemical. EFSA describes the role of migration and toxicological data in evaluating substances used in food-contact materials: EFSA: active and intelligent materials.
Regulatory details are jurisdiction-specific. On its U.S. phthalates page, updated May 27, 2026, the FDA reports that it revoked 23 phthalate food-contact authorizations in 2022 after the uses were reported abandoned; the page also says eight phthalates remain authorized as plasticizers for food-contact use. FDA’s May 2026 evaluation supported considering DEHP, DCHP, DIOP and DINP together in a future cumulative risk assessment. That is not a final finding that every amount of those substances, or every detected plasticiser, presents the same risk. The page said comments were accepted through July 26, 2026, a deadline that has passed: FDA: phthalates in food packaging and food-contact applications.
For a legal or compliance question, check the current rules and guidance for the relevant country and intended use. A migration study, a laboratory result from one drink, and a regulatory safety assessment answer different questions.
What historical food-testing studies show
A UK Food Standards Agency project updated on February 8, 2008, developed and validated methods for 17 phthalate diesters, nine phthalate monoesters, phthalic acid and total phthalates in foods. It analyzed 29 retail samples to investigate whether environmental and food-contact sources could be distinguished, and 261 retail food samples to establish concentration ranges. Those are historical project figures for foods—not a current estimate of how often drinks contain phthalates: UK FSA: determination of phthalates in foods.
