A Bioresorbable Battery Could Power Ingestible Medical Devices—But It Won’t Replace Pacemaker Batteries

A new bioresorbable battery prototype from MIT is designed to power temporary devices swallowed for use in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, then break down. It may offer an alternative to conventional coin batteries in some ingestible electronics, but the reported research does not show that it can replace long-lasting batteries in pacemakers or other permanent medical implants.

What the MIT battery is and how it works

The prototype uses a magnesium anode, a molybdenum trioxide cathode and an ionic-liquid gel electrolyte. Its materials are intended to break down and be absorbed by the body after the battery has served its purpose. MIT reported two forms: a disc 7.5 millimeters in diameter and a rectangular bar 24 millimeters long. The research team reported an output of 1.84 volts. These are prototype specifications reported by MIT, not product specifications for a commercially available battery. (MIT News, September 21, 2026)

The design addresses a particular challenge with ingestible electronics: conventional coin batteries can pose a safety risk if their protective coating is damaged in the GI tract. A power source designed to break down could also reduce the amount of battery material that passes into wastewater after excretion. That rationale applies to temporary swallowed devices; it is not evidence that conventional batteries in medical devices generally are unsafe.

How long did the prototype last?

In a highly acidic solution intended to resemble gastric juice, the batteries functioned normally for about three days. Their performance then began to decline, and they broke down completely within a few weeks under the reported test conditions. These measurements describe laboratory testing, not a guaranteed operating time or breakdown schedule in a person. MIT’s account does not provide enough detail to establish how performance would vary among people or real-world uses.

What did the battery power?

An ingestible RFID tag

One demonstration paired the battery with an RFID tag that transmitted from the GI tract. MIT reported continuous transmission and a range of up to 1.5 meters in the animal tests. The demonstration points to possible medication-adherence signaling, but it does not establish an approved product or clinical performance in people.

A capsule for electrical stimulation

A second demonstration used a capsule to deliver a small electrical current intended to stimulate ghrelin production in the stomach. In animal tests reported by MIT, the battery-powered device operated for up to three days. A 20-minute stimulation session raised ghrelin levels by about 50 percent in those tests. This is an animal-study result, not evidence that the device treats a condition or produces the same effect in human patients.

Could it replace batteries in pacemakers or other implants?

No such replacement is demonstrated. The work focuses on temporary ingestible GI devices, which have different power needs and operating periods from permanent implants. A device intended to dissolve after a short time is not shown to provide the reliable power needed over years by a pacemaker. The evidence supports a research direction for some transient ingestible electronics—not a general replacement for medical batteries.

Is the battery available or tested in people?

MIT describes prototype development and animal testing, not a battery available to patients. Its September 2026 account says the researchers plan a clinical trial for the SAFARI system, expected to begin in about two years. That is a reported plan, not a confirmed trial start, regulatory clearance or proof of human safety and efficacy. The account does not establish commercial availability.

What could come next?

The researchers propose using bioresorbable batteries in ingestible sensing and therapeutic devices. The RFID and electrical-stimulation capsules illustrate two possibilities, while other applications remain prospective. Whether the approach proves useful will depend on evidence about safety, performance and clinical value in people, as well as the needs of each device. MIT News identifies the study as published in Nature Chemical Engineering; its report alone does not establish those broader clinical or regulatory outcomes.
