Destiny 2 crashes do not have one universal cause. The right fix depends on whether you play on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, whether the game closes or merely slows down, and any error code shown. Start by recording those details, check Bungie’s current issue notices, then follow the matching troubleshooting steps below—beginning with reversible checks rather than reinstalling.
First, identify what is actually happening
Before changing settings, note your platform and what occurred immediately before the problem: Did Destiny 2 close to the desktop or console menu, freeze, or keep running with frame hitches or performance drops? Record any error code and whether the issue began after a game update, graphics-driver change, or settings change. Those distinctions matter: Bungie associates different codes with different types of problems, and a performance drop is not necessarily a crash.

These codes point to different troubleshooting branches; none alone proves the precise cause of every player’s problem.

Look at Destiny 2 Known Issues and Vital Information before making system changes. The page is a targeted list, not a complete inventory of possible faults. Last updated July 7, 2026, it says some laptops with Intel 12th-generation Iris integrated graphics may crash in high-demand situations. Bungie suggests setting Windows graphics preferences so Destiny 2 uses the laptop’s discrete GPU. The same page says Bungie is investigating Steam frame hitches or performance drops since Update 9.7.0.2; that notice does not establish the cause of any particular player’s crash.

If you play on PC, check drivers and system fit
For BROCCOLI
Bungie describes BROCCOLI as a GPU detection issue commonly caused by a driver crash. Its recommended checks are to update Windows and the graphics drivers. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that an update will resolve the problem. See Bungie’s BROCCOLI guidance.
For RUTABAGA or unexplained performance-related failures
Close background applications, update the operating system and GPU firmware, and compare your PC with Bungie’s published PC system requirements. The requirements list CPU, GPU, and memory specifications and requires 64-bit Windows 10. Bungie also says Destiny 2 PC is not officially supported on laptop configurations, even when they meet or exceed the listed minimum specifications. Meeting the listed requirements does not identify the cause of a crash by itself, and the guidance does not justify buying a replacement component without a diagnosis.

For CAT or an update problem
CAT means an update is available. Update Destiny 2 through the platform where you play. If the update does not complete on PC, Bungie’s CAT guidance includes restarting the relevant launcher and, if needed, verifying the game files. It also describes clearing launcher cache for update issues. Follow the instructions for your specific launcher in Bungie’s CAT guide.

For MARMOT
Because Bungie links MARMOT to corrupted game files, use the platform’s verification or repair procedure first. Its instructions differ between PC launchers and consoles; the console steps include quitting the game, clearing cache, and restarting. Try the relevant repair steps before a full reinstall. Follow Bungie’s MARMOT instructions for your platform.
Reset PC settings only if settings may be involved
If the issue concerns graphics, key bindings, or other in-game settings, Bungie’s first troubleshooting step is to delete CVARS.xml. The game creates a fresh file when launched again, resetting custom settings to their defaults. Expect to configure your preferences again. Use the steps in Bungie’s CVARS troubleshooting guide; do not treat this as a universal fix for unrelated crashes.

Use console steps on consoles
Do not apply PC driver or launcher instructions to a console. For console-specific cache and restart steps, use Bungie’s guidance for the error you see. For NIGHTINGALE, Bungie says to retry and relaunch first, then provides console cache steps and PC file-verification options; reinstalling comes after earlier troubleshooting. Follow Bungie’s NIGHTINGALE guide and select the instructions that match your platform.

Reinstalling is an escalation step in Bungie’s relevant instructions, not the first fix for every crash. If a problem persists after the applicable update, restart, cache, and file-repair steps—and after reinstalling where Bungie recommends it—check whether other games also fail. Bungie’s NIGHTINGALE guidance notes that persistent issues may involve damaged or malfunctioning hardware. If other titles fail too, contact the relevant platform or hardware support service; the available evidence does not identify a specific part to replace.
