If your desktop shows no lights, makes no sound, and its fans do not spin when you press the power button, start by checking the external power path: the cable, outlet, and any power strip or UPS. If lights or fans do come on, it is not a straightforward no-power symptom; use the signs on screen and any beeps or blinking lights to distinguish a startup, boot, or display problem.
First, identify what happens when you press the power button
Watch and listen for signs of life: indicator lights, fans, beeps, keyboard lights, a manufacturer logo, or an error message. Dell’s troubleshooting guidance separates four conditions that can look similar at first: no power, failure to complete POST (the computer’s startup self-test), failure to load the operating system after POST, and a display problem. The distinction matters because a PC that powers up but cannot show an image needs different checks from one that has no visible response at all. Dell explains these symptom categories.

- No lights, fans, or other response: follow the external power checks below.
- Lights or fans, but no successful startup: note any beeps, blinking lights, logo, or error. These may indicate a POST or boot issue.
- Computer appears to run, but the screen is blank: check the monitor and video connection rather than treating it as a no-power fault.
Check the cable, outlet, and power strip or UPS
Before opening the case or replacing parts, rule out the simplest part of the power path. Turn the desktop off if it is responding, then check that its power cable is firmly seated at both the computer and the wall. Try an outlet you know works; you can test the outlet with another device. If the desktop is connected through a surge protector, extension cord, or UPS, temporarily bypass it and connect directly to a known-working outlet.

Some desktop and monitor cords may be the same type and suitable to swap for diagnosis, but do not assume that all cords are interchangeable. Dell’s desktop power troubleshooting guide recommends checking the cable and trying a known-good compatible one.

Inspect the cord, plug, and computer’s power inlet for cuts, exposed wires, heat damage, bent pins, or other visible damage. Do not use a damaged cable or adapter. Contact the computer manufacturer or a qualified repair provider for advice on repair or replacement.
Use a reset only if it is documented for your model
A model-specific power reset can help in some cases, but the procedure and timing are not universal. Dell’s instructions for its desktops and all-in-ones describe disconnecting power and external devices, then holding the power button for 30–35 seconds before reconnecting and testing. Treat that as a Dell-documented step, not a timing rule for every desktop. Check your manufacturer’s guide for the exact make and model before trying a reset.

Do not assume every desktop has a PSU self-test
Some Dell desktop models include a built-in self-test (BIST) for the power supply unit (PSU). The test’s indicator light and fan response can help assess whether the supply is delivering power, but its availability and procedure vary by model. Consult the system manual or support page to see whether your desktop supports it and how to use it.

A failed self-test does not by itself prove that the PSU is the only faulty component; a connected component may also be involved. Dell’s PSU troubleshooting guidance describes the test and its limits. Do not replace a PSU based only on a symptom or a test result without checking the model-specific diagnosis and compatibility requirements.

If the computer powers on, follow the right symptom path
Lights or fans come on, but startup stops
Record exactly what happens: whether the manufacturer logo appears, where startup stops, and any beep sequence or blinking-light pattern. These clues may help identify a POST or boot failure. Look up the pattern in the manual or support information for your specific computer model; do not apply another model’s diagnostic codes.
The computer seems to run, but the screen stays black
Check that the monitor has power, that its cable is seated at both ends, that it is connected to the correct video port, and that the monitor is set to the correct input. If available, try a known-good compatible display cable or another monitor. Dell’s symptom guide treats no-video issues separately from no-power, POST, and boot problems.

The computer passes startup but cannot load the operating system
If the machine gets through its startup checks but then fails to load the operating system, use boot-recovery guidance for your computer and operating system. That is a boot problem, not the same as a desktop that receives no power.
When to contact support or arrange repair
If a known-working outlet, correctly seated compatible cable, and any model-documented checks do not resolve a true no-power symptom, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Have the computer’s make and model available so support can direct you to relevant diagnostics and confirm warranty coverage. Repair options depend on the location, warranty, diagnosed fault, and parts compatible with that system; there is no universal replacement part or repair choice that applies to every desktop.
