A desktop thin client is an endpoint computer that connects over a network to a centrally hosted desktop or application. The endpoint handles the user’s display and input, while most computing happens on the remote system. The exact split varies: a thin client may still perform some processing or use local storage.
How a desktop thin client works
The user signs in on the endpoint and connects through a local network or the internet to a hosted computing environment. The endpoint sends keyboard and pointer input to that environment and displays the returned interface. In a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployment, operating systems, applications, and user data are hosted centrally. Other remote desktop setups can provide shared sessions, individual virtual desktops, or specific applications. The endpoint’s local role depends on the implementation. AWS explains the thin-client model, while Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services overview describes the available delivery models.

Thin client, VDI, and remote desktop services are different things
| Term | What it refers to | How it relates to a thin client |
|---|---|---|
| Thin client | An endpoint device or software client that relies substantially on centrally hosted computing. | It is the user’s access point, not the server or hosting architecture. |
| VDI | A way to host virtual desktops centrally. | VDI is a common environment that a thin client can access. |
| Remote Desktop Services (RDS) | Services that deliver session-based desktops, virtual desktops, or individual applications such as RemoteApp. | A thin client can connect to an RDS environment; RDS describes the delivery service, not the endpoint. |
These distinctions matter when evaluating a deployment: choosing a thin client does not by itself determine how desktops are hosted or which applications are delivered.
How it compares with a conventional PC
A conventional PC generally runs more of its operating system and applications locally. A thin client depends more on remote computing, so its usefulness is tied to the hosted environment and the connection to it. The boundary is not absolute: modern endpoints vary in local processing, storage, and software, and some combine local and remote work.

Where thin clients may fit—and what to weigh
Organizations may consider thin clients when they want centrally managed desktops for distributed or hybrid teams, or standardized endpoints for a facility. AWS identifies remote work and manufacturing as examples; Cisco describes VDI contexts that include healthcare, education, and public-sector work. These examples do not establish that the approach suits every organization in those fields. Cisco’s VDI overview provides additional context.
- Network dependency: Access and responsiveness depend on network availability and latency.
- Central-service requirements: The hosted environment must be properly provisioned and administered; central hosting also brings service and licensing costs.
- Application and peripheral support: Confirm that required applications, specialist devices, audio, video, and other peripherals work with the chosen endpoint and remote environment.
- Independent use: If the hosted environment is unavailable, a thin client may have less ability to work independently than a conventional PC.
- Security controls: Centralization can support consistent administration, but does not guarantee security; outcomes depend on configuration and policy.
What to check before selecting endpoint hardware
There is no universally best thin-client device. Check the specific remote desktop provider and protocol, the endpoint’s operating system and management lifecycle, network resilience and expected latency, display outputs and number of screens, and support for required applications and peripherals. Also assess central hosting and licensing costs, local-data controls, and the expected experience for graphics, video, and audio.

Compatibility can be provider-specific. For example, AWS documents its WorkSpaces Thin Client for supported AWS desktop services and describes its architecture in the AWS architecture documentation. AWS states that support for the device ends on March 31, 2027; that date applies to this product, not to thin clients as a category. AWS’s product documentation gives the end-of-support notice.
