The GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS is a compact cinema camera for shooters who want to put a small camera in an unusual spot and choose their own lens—not a conventional waterproof action camera. Its 1-inch-type sensor, high-frame-rate recording and native Micro Four Thirds mount make it unusually flexible for its size, but the ILS demands manual focus, compatible glass and more care with stabilization and weather protection. It makes the most sense for deliberate, rigged shots; for grab-and-go action footage, the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro is the more practical choice.
What kind of camera is the Mission 1 Pro ILS?
Think of the ILS as a small, mountable cinema camera rather than a traditional GoPro. Its interchangeable lens system opens up framing and close-focus options, but it also transfers work normally handled by a camera’s autofocus and fixed-lens design to the operator. You need to choose a suitable lens, set focus yourself and plan how to protect and support the assembled camera.

The camera has a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mount, but its sensor is a 1-inch-type sensor—not an MFT-sized sensor. The mount describes the lens interface, not the sensor dimensions. That distinction matters when you are estimating the field of view you will get from a familiar MFT lens.

GoPro lists a 50-megapixel 1-inch-type sensor and GP3 processor, shared with the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro. The advertised capture modes reach 8K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 240 fps and 1440p at 480 fps. Open Gate recording is listed up to 8K30 and 4K120, and the camera can also record short 1080p960 burst slow-motion clips.

These are advertised maximum modes, not a promise that every resolution and frame rate has the same crop, heat behavior or recording duration. Treat the high-frame-rate figures as creative options to investigate for your intended shoot, rather than assuming they are interchangeable with routine recording modes.
For color and production workflows, GoPro lists 10-bit color, GP-Log2, HLG HDR, timecode sync and stock bitrates up to 240 Mbps. GoPro Labs adds experimental options, including higher bitrate and custom stabilization; those Labs features should not be confused with the camera’s standard capabilities.
Which MFT lenses work with the GoPro ILS?
The mount alone does not make every MFT lens a good match. GoPro says the body has no electronic lens contacts, does not support autofocus, and requires a lens with manual focus and manual or fixed aperture. A lens that depends on electronic focus or aperture control is therefore not a suitable choice for this body.

Before buying a lens, check GoPro’s current compatibility recommendations and confirm that the particular lens can be focused and stopped down as required. If you plan to adapt a lens from another mount, the adapter must match that lens; an adapter does not remove the camera’s manual-focus and manual-aperture requirements.

GoPro lists HyperSmooth support for prime rectilinear lenses from 6mm to 500mm, alongside specific supported fisheye lenses. Its listed fisheye examples include the Laowa 4mm, 7Artisans 6mm, Meike 7.5mm, 7Artisans 7.5mm II and Brightin Star 7.5mm. Those examples are not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every lens or shooting setup: check the current supported-lens list and the required camera settings before relying on stabilization.
What does the crop factor mean in practice?
GoPro gives a crop of 2.7× without stabilization and approximately 3× with stabilization. In its example, a 17mm MFT lens gives a field of view roughly equivalent to 50mm on a full-frame camera when stabilization is on. So a lens that feels wide on a conventional MFT camera may look much tighter here.
That crop changes lens selection. If you need a broad view, check the resulting field of view on the ILS rather than choosing by the lens’s MFT focal length alone. Stabilization can narrow the view further, so frame the shot for the mode you intend to use.
How is it to operate?
Manual focus is the central operating compromise. The rear screen offers Focus Assist, which magnifies the view up to 8×, and focus peaking to mark areas that appear in focus. Those tools can help, but a small built-in display is not as comfortable for critical focus as a larger monitor. GoPro also describes a supported iPhone or iPad workflow that can help with monitoring.

There is no autofocus or subject tracking to take over when a subject moves. For a locked-off close-up, a carefully set manual focus can be entirely workable; for unpredictable action or a subject moving quickly toward and away from the camera, keeping focus becomes a greater part of the shoot. TechRadar’s review found that a tested Laowa lens enabled close-focus, detail-style shots that the fixed-lens sibling could not capture in the same way. That is a use-case observation, not a guarantee for every lens.
Is the Mission 1 Pro ILS waterproof?
No waterproof rating is listed for the ILS, and the interchangeable-lens setup is not a drop-in replacement for a sealed fixed-lens action camera. WIRED describes it as a small cinema camera rather than an action camera, while TechRadar highlights the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro’s waterproofing and autofocus. If your routine involves rain, water, mud or a quick grab-and-go mount, the ILS adds protection concerns that the fixed-lens option is designed to avoid.
How small is the camera, and what support does it need?
GoPro lists the body at 197g and 89.6 × 58.7 × 46.1mm, including the mount and without the body cap. The body includes mounting fingers and a 1/4-20 thread, plus magnetic latch compatibility. These figures describe the camera body, not the weight or dimensions of a complete lens-and-adapter rig.

A heavier lens can shift the balance and place more demands on the mount, so plan the support around the complete setup rather than the camera body alone.

WIRED sees a place for the small body as a crash camera or B-camera when mounting space is limited. Those are situations where its compact size can matter more than quick focus or weather resistance. A small body does not automatically make the whole system small: the chosen lens, adapter, support and protection all contribute to the final rig.
What battery and recording media does it use?
The camera uses a 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery and USB-C. GoPro claims more than 3 hours of continuous recording at 4K30 and more than 5 hours at 1080p30. TechRadar reports substantially shorter figures for high-resolution recording modes, underscoring that runtime depends on the mode; do not use the lower-resolution claims to estimate an 8K or high-frame-rate shoot.
GoPro specifies a V30 or UHS-3 microSD card. High-resolution files can consume substantial card capacity, so check GoPro’s current recommended-card list and choose enough storage for the duration and modes you expect to record.

The ILS trades convenience for lens flexibility. It is not automatically the better camera because it accepts interchangeable lenses: the advantage matters only if you have a specific framing, close-focus or placement need that justifies operating around manual focus and lens compatibility.

Is the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS worth it?
GoPro announced a US MSRP of $699.99 for the body, or $599.99 for existing GoPro subscribers, on August 26, 2026. The lens is sold separately, so those launch prices are not the cost of a ready-to-shoot lens system. They are announcement prices, not a guarantee of current price or availability; check the current local price, stock and lens availability where you live.
To judge the real outlay, include a compatible lens and microSD card, and consider whether the shoot also calls for spare batteries, a monitor, protection or lens support. The ILS offers its strongest value when interchangeable optics solve a concrete problem—such as getting a close-focus shot or fitting a camera into a tight rig—not simply because a mount is present.
Buy it if
- You specifically need a very small camera body for a rig, crash-camera position or B-camera role.
- You are comfortable setting focus and aperture yourself and have a lens that meets GoPro’s requirements.
- You want to choose specialty, vintage or manual lenses and are prepared to check crop and stabilization compatibility.
Choose another camera if
- You need reliable autofocus or subject tracking for fast, unpredictable movement.
- You want waterproof, uncomplicated action-camera use.
- You expect familiar MFT lenses to retain their usual field of view, or you do not want to budget for a separate lens and the rest of the recording setup.
The ILS is a distinctive and capable small-body concept, but its potential depends on the operator and lens. For the right planned shot, that trade can be worthwhile; for the usual action-camera job, the extra decisions are a liability rather than an upgrade.
