A useful website screenshot review starts with a specific question and a reproducible page state. Capture the relevant screen, annotate what is wrong and what should happen instead, compare the updated version against the same goal, and use browser inspection when the question cannot be answered from pixels alone.
Choose the question before taking screenshots
Decide what the review needs to establish. A screenshot set meant to check visual fidelity should not be expected to answer every question about content, responsive behavior, implementation quality, and user flows at once. Where possible, keep each capture set focused on one review goal.

- Visual fidelity: Does the implementation match the relevant design in spacing, typography, color, imagery, and alignment?
- Content hierarchy: Can a reviewer identify the primary action and understand the order of information?
- Responsive behavior: Does the page remain usable and coherent at the viewport sizes that matter to the project?
- Implementation defects: Are there visible clipping, overlap, missing assets, or unexpected states?
- User flow: Does the interface communicate what happens at a particular step, such as an open menu, validation error, or confirmation?
These are practical review categories, not a universal formal protocol. Agree on the question and expected outcome before collecting comments; otherwise, reviewers may judge the same image against different assumptions.
Capture a page state someone else can reproduce
A screenshot is evidence of one page at one moment, not a complete record of the site. Include enough context in the review record for another person to recreate the state and understand what they are seeing.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Record the essentials
- Page or URL: Identify the page, including a route or environment when relevant.
- Viewport: Record the browser viewport dimensions. If a particular device or breakpoint matters, state it rather than labeling an image only “mobile.”
- State: Note anything deliberately opened or triggered, such as a navigation menu, selected tab, form error, or confirmation.
- Capture date: Add the date so the image can be distinguished from later iterations.
- Review goal: Label the capture with the question it is intended to answer.
Use a viewport capture when the issue concerns a particular visible state; use a full-page capture when the page’s overall sequence and context matter. A full-page image may be helpful for orientation, but it does not replace focused captures of responsive or interactive states.
Before capture, make sure the page has reached the intended state. Dynamic content, delayed images, or a collapsed menu can change what the screenshot records. If a state cannot be reliably recreated, describe that limitation in the review rather than treating the image as definitive.
Annotate so feedback leads to a decision
For each comment, identify the location, describe the observed issue, and state the expected result or ask a specific open question. A circle or arrow by itself marks an area but does not tell the implementer what decision is needed.

- Point to the relevant area. Keep the marker close enough that its target is unambiguous.
- Describe what is visible. For example: “The heading wraps to three lines at this viewport.”
- Explain the expectation. For example: “The approved design shows two lines; should the text width match the design, or is this wrap intentional?”
- Separate defects from questions. A confirmed mismatch and a request for design clarification need different decisions.
When dimensions or implementation details matter, connect the screenshot to the design context. Figma describes adding annotations and measurements to design files as part of communicating design intent. Treat that as a product capability, not evidence that a particular team will avoid misunderstandings.
Compare iterations against the right reference
If the question is what changed, compare the current implementation or design frame with the relevant previous version. Asking reviewers to rely on memory makes it harder to isolate changed details from unchanged ones.
Figma describes frame comparison and Dev Mode as support for inspection, comparison, and handoff. Its published access guidance says Dev Mode is available on paid plans and requires a Full or Dev seat; check Figma’s current plan and seat terms before relying on that access. Those feature descriptions explain what the vendor says its tools support, not a guaranteed review outcome.

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
For a useful comparison, keep the review goal, viewport, and page state consistent between versions. If one of them differs, call out the difference so reviewers do not mistake it for an implementation change.
Keep comments attached to the work
Where practical, keep the screenshot, annotation, related design context, and implementation iteration together. Figma describes its handoff approach as supporting annotated design files, status information, and developer collaboration. A separate screenshot-and-comment record can also work, provided the page, state, owner, and decision remain identifiable.
For each actionable item, record who will address it and what decision was made. For an open design question, record the answer rather than leaving a marker that future reviewers must reinterpret.

Use browser inspection when pixels are not enough
A screenshot cannot establish every property exposed to users or assistive technology. For accessibility questions, inspect the page in the browser as well as reviewing its appearance. Chrome DevTools documents accessibility inspection features and notes that some accessibility properties are dynamically calculated by the browser.
Use the screenshot to identify visible concerns, such as text that appears too small or a control whose purpose is unclear. Then use browser inspection and appropriate accessibility evaluation to investigate properties that an image cannot show. Do not treat a visually accurate screenshot as an accessibility audit.

Close the loop on every review
- Assign each actionable issue to an owner.
- Record the decision for questions that required clarification.
- Capture the updated page state with the review goal and relevant viewport documented.
- Verify the change against the original question, not a newly introduced one.
- Close, defer, or reopen each item so the review record reflects its current status.
This closure process is a practical workflow recommendation rather than a formal standard. It makes the final capture meaningful: reviewers can see whether the requested change addressed the intended issue.
Common review problems and fixes
- Comments say only “looks off.” Identify the element, describe the observable mismatch, and state the intended result or question.
- Reviewers disagree about what the image shows. Add the URL or page identifier, viewport dimensions, page state, date, and review goal.
- The comparison seems to show many unrelated changes. Confirm that both captures use the same viewport and state; otherwise document what differs.
- A screenshot looks correct but an accessibility concern remains. Inspect browser accessibility information and evaluate the page beyond the static image.
- A capture misses a menu, error, or delayed content. Recreate the required state before capture and record how it was triggered. For automated captures, use an appropriate wait or interaction setting.
- A team cannot tell whether an item is a defect or a design question. Label the distinction and record the decision needed before implementation proceeds.
What screenshots can and cannot establish
Screenshots make visual observations concrete and comparable when the page state is documented. They do not by themselves establish why a layout rendered as it did, whether an interactive flow works in every state, or whether browser-exposed accessibility properties are correct. Use them as a focused review artifact, connect them to the design and implementation, and bring in browser inspection when the question requires information beyond visible pixels.
