Best Android Emulators for Linux: Which One Should You Choose?

Android Studio’s Emulator is the clearest Linux choice for app development; Waydroid targets container-based desktop integration, while Genymotion offers a separate virtual-device workflow.

For Android development and virtual-device testing on Linux, start with Android Studio’s Emulator. If you want Android apps integrated with a Linux desktop, investigate Waydroid, which runs Android in a Linux container. Genymotion Desktop is another virtual-device option, with QEMU as its default Linux hypervisor. These tools use different runtime models and serve different jobs; there is no single best choice for everyone.

Which Android emulator is best for your Linux use case?

Option Best fit How it runs Key consideration
Android Studio Emulator (AVD) Developing Android apps and testing different virtual devices or API configurations Virtual devices managed through Android Studio Linux hardware acceleration relies on KVM; check virtualization support, permissions, and the published hardware requirements.
Waydroid Investigating Android apps alongside Linux desktop apps Android in a Linux container Check the current project installation guidance for your distribution, kernel, and desktop session; broad compatibility was not established by the project information cited here.
Genymotion Desktop A separate virtual-device environment for testing QEMU by default on Linux The vendor recommends 16 GB RAM and OpenGL 3.3-capable graphics; image architecture can affect app installation.
Anbox No current recommendation established Current status could not be verified from the available official project page Do not assume it is maintained, deprecated, or discontinued without current supporting information.

Choose Android Studio for app development

Google’s Emulator is distributed with Android Studio and is organized around Android Virtual Devices (AVDs). That makes it the most direct choice when you need to test an app against virtual device configurations rather than simply run Android apps alongside desktop software. See Google’s guide to running apps on the Android Emulator.

Investigate Waydroid for desktop integration

Waydroid describes itself as “Android in a Linux container.” That is a different approach from a conventional virtual device and makes it a candidate when the goal is using Android apps in a Linux desktop environment. The description alone does not establish support for every distribution or desktop session, so consult the project’s current instructions for your exact system at Waydroid.

Consider Genymotion for its virtual-device workflow

Genymotion Desktop offers another virtual-device environment. On Linux, QEMU is its default hypervisor; its documentation describes VirtualBox as deprecated for Linux while retaining it for legacy support. Its published requirements and app-architecture notes are worth checking before choosing it.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What Android Studio Emulator requires on Linux

Google’s listed requirements for Android Studio with the Emulator on Linux are not universal requirements for Waydroid or Genymotion. The Android Studio installation requirements list the following baseline and recommended configuration:

Specification Listed baseline Listed recommendation
Linux system 64-bit distribution supporting GNOME, KDE, or Unity; glibc 2.31 or later Not stated separately
Memory 16 GB RAM 32 GB RAM
Free storage 16 GB SSD with at least 32 GB free
Graphics memory GPU with 4 GB VRAM GPU with 8 GB VRAM
Display resolution 1280 × 800 1920 × 1080
CPU Hardware virtualization support Not stated separately

These are vendor-published specifications, not a guarantee of smooth performance on every machine that meets the baseline. Emulator workloads, the virtual device configuration, and other running software can affect how much headroom you need.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Check KVM acceleration before troubleshooting performance

On Linux, the Android Emulator uses KVM for hardware acceleration. The host processor must support and have enabled the appropriate virtualization extensions, and your account needs suitable permissions. Google’s hardware-acceleration guide documents these checks.

  1. Check that the CPU exposes virtualization flags. Run egrep -c '(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo. A positive count indicates that Intel VT-x (vmx) or AMD-V (svm) flags are visible to Linux; it does not by itself prove KVM is usable.
  2. Check emulator acceleration. From the Android SDK’s emulator tools, run emulator -accel-check. Use the result to determine whether the emulator can use acceleration.
  3. Check KVM availability and permissions. Google also suggests installing cpu-checker and running kvm-ok. If the check reports a permissions issue, consult your distribution’s KVM guidance and confirm your user has the required access.
  4. Confirm virtualization is enabled in firmware. If CPU flags or KVM checks fail, verify that Intel VT-x or AMD-V is enabled in the machine’s firmware settings; on a hosted virtual machine, the provider must expose nested virtualization.

For Intel systems, Google specifies VT-x, Intel EM64T, and Execute Disable support enabled. For AMD, AMD-V support is required. A failure at this layer is a host configuration issue, not an Android app compatibility problem.

Genymotion hardware and Android image compatibility

Genymotion’s Linux requirements page recommends an Intel Core i5 (64-bit), AMD Ryzen or higher, an OpenGL 3.3-capable GPU or higher, at least 16 GB RAM, and a 1920 × 1080 or higher display. It lists 120 MB for the application plus 1 GB per virtual device. These are Genymotion’s recommendations, not a performance comparison with Android Studio. See Genymotion Desktop requirements.

Image architecture can affect whether an app installs. Genymotion recommends ARM64 images for better compatibility, noting that more modern apps are available only for ARM64 and that many current apps may not install on x86_64 images. ARM64 is a compatibility measure, not a guarantee that every app or Google Play service will work. Details are in Genymotion’s Deploy Applications documentation.

Common setup problems and what to check

  • The Android Studio Emulator reports acceleration unavailable: check CPU virtualization flags, firmware settings, KVM availability, and user permissions with the checks above.
  • The emulator is slow: first establish whether KVM acceleration is active. Also compare your machine with Google’s Android Studio-plus-Emulator requirements; meeting the baseline does not guarantee a particular speed.
  • An app will not install in Genymotion: check the virtual device’s image architecture. Genymotion recommends ARM64 for compatibility with modern apps, but this does not resolve every app or service dependency.
  • Waydroid installation instructions do not match your machine: do not assume instructions for another Linux distribution or session apply. Recheck the project’s live guide for your distribution, kernel, and desktop setup.
  • You are considering Anbox based on an old recommendation: its current status is not established by the accessible official project page, so verify with current authoritative project information before relying on it.

ScreenshotNeo is a companion for capturing web pages, not an Android emulator

If your Android development workflow also needs website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server—not a replacement for an Android emulator. Its one-request API returns a screenshot or PDF, and its clean-shot options can accept consent banners and remove supported popups or chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, then paid options starting at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details and the free sign-up to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
