Does Denuvo cause stutter? There is no reliable evidence that it always does—or that every game using it is unaffected. A detailed test of Final Fantasy XV found no meaningful frame-rate difference in its best-matched scene, while other scene and loading comparisons showed small differences that could not confidently be attributed to Denuvo. The practical answer depends on the game, its build, and how the comparison is made.
What is Denuvo Anti-Piracy?
Denuvo Anti-Piracy is a protection layer that a game publisher integrates into a game. Irdeto, its vendor, describes it as reinforcing the digital-rights-management (DRM) provided by a distribution platform: the game validates ownership through that platform, then uses a hardware-bound token to authorize play on a device. Irdeto says its protection is designed to stay out of gameplay-critical paths, but that is the vendor’s product description, not independent proof that every game has no performance cost. Irdeto’s product overview lists Windows 10 and 11, Linux through Proton, and ARM on Windows, subject to the game and compatibility layer meeting their own requirements.

“Denuvo” can also refer to different security tools or techniques. Anti-Piracy DRM, code obfuscation, and anti-cheat are not interchangeable. A statement about one mode in one game does not establish how another Denuvo product performs.
Examples of other Denuvo-related uses
- MADFINGER Games said Gray Zone Warfare began using code obfuscation with update 0.3.0.0 to make code harder for cheat engines to read and deter cheats such as ESP and aimbots. The developer said this use did not authenticate with Denuvo servers and reported no discernible performance difference in its own benchmarks. That statement applies to the game and protection mode it described, not to all Denuvo Anti-Piracy implementations. MADFINGER Games’ explanation
- James Rowbotham of Small Impact Games described optimizing a Denuvo anti-cheat tool and said performance was the same afterward. That is a customer statement about an anti-cheat tool after optimization, not a general benchmark of Anti-Piracy DRM. Game Developer’s report
Does Denuvo cause stutter or lower FPS?
The strongest detailed comparison in the available evidence is a 2018 test by Peter “Durante” Thoman of the Final Fantasy XV retail release and a free demo executable without Denuvo. It does not support a universal claim either way. In the most consistently reproducible scene, the two builds showed no statistically meaningful frame-rate difference. Two less directly matched scenes produced small results in opposite directions, and loading tests showed a difference that could have come from code changes beyond Denuvo.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Thoman tested three recreated scenes on an Intel Core i7-5820K with a GeForce GTX 1080. He tested CPU clocks of 4.1 GHz and 3.1 GHz, with 12, 6, 4, 2, or 1 hardware threads available. GPU load was deliberately constrained to focus on possible CPU-side effects. Because save files could not be moved between the builds, he manually recreated scene positions—an important limit on how directly the scenes could be compared. Read Thoman’s test and methodology.
What the Final Fantasy XV numbers mean
- In scene 2, the retail build was 3.5% slower in geometric mean across the tested core counts. Thoman cautioned that the recreated scenes might not have been equivalent.
- In scene 3, the retail build was 5.6% faster in geometric mean across those core counts. The opposite direction is a reason not to treat either isolated scene as proof of a Denuvo effect.
- For loading tests, the demo had a 6.7% geometric-mean improvement over the retail release. Thoman described this as small and repeatable, but noted that other differences between the builds could explain it.
These are results from one game comparison published in 2018, not estimates of Denuvo’s average effect across games or current versions. The evidence does not establish an independently measured cross-game average for stutter or frame rate.

Why is Denuvo blamed for stuttering?
Protection software is one possible difference between two game builds, so it can attract attention when players compare performance. But a stutter or FPS change after a game update or Denuvo removal does not, by itself, identify the cause. A patch may change other code, settings, or content at the same time. The Final Fantasy XV test illustrates the attribution problem: its less directly matched scenes moved in opposite directions, while its loading result could have reflected other build differences.
Stutter and average FPS are also different measurements. Average FPS can conceal uneven frame delivery; a useful comparison should report repeatable frame-time results as well as averages, and explain whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance. Without matched builds and repeatable conditions, a difference is an association—not proof that Denuvo caused it.

How to judge a Denuvo on/off performance comparison
For a comparison to say something meaningful about Denuvo, the builds need to be as equivalent as possible. Check whether the test controls the following:
- Game version and patch: Confirm both builds use the same game version and patch state.
- Protection mode: Establish whether the comparison concerns Anti-Piracy DRM, code obfuscation, anti-cheat, or another feature.
- Scene and game state: Use the same repeatable scene, save state, route, and actions. If the builds cannot share a save, disclose how the scene was recreated.
- Hardware and settings: Match the hardware, resolution, graphics settings, and background conditions.
- Measurements: Repeat the test and report frame times and loading results as well as average FPS.
- Bottleneck and other changes: Identify whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance and disclose other code or content differences between builds.
If a comparison fails these checks, it may still show that two particular versions perform differently, but it cannot isolate Denuvo as the cause.

Does removing Denuvo make a game run better?
Not necessarily. Removal may happen alongside a game patch, and other protection features can remain. In a notice dated December 4, 2025, KRAFTON said Denuvo support for the PC version of Hi-Fi RUSH was scheduled to end on January 16, 2026. The notice required players to install the latest patch to continue playing and said the game’s own anti-tampering features would remain. KRAFTON described the change as intended to provide a more stable and efficient service environment, but did not report a measured performance gain or establish that Denuvo had caused a specific stutter problem.
