Akshat Raj’s proposal calls this Minimum Viable Context (MVC): filter information by authority and validity, retrieve and rerank candidates, then synthesize a compact context. It is a design approach, not a proven universal upgrade; the article provides illustrative examples rather than comparative performance results.
Big data and model context solve different problems
Big data describes the scale and complexity of datasets that can exceed traditional processing tools. A common framing uses volume, velocity and variety. Data hubs, in turn, aggregate or exchange information across sources. Those capabilities address how an organization brings data together; they do not determine which pieces should inform a specific model response. A 2022 Springer Nature chapter on emerging technologies provides that broader context, but does not validate Raj’s retrieval design.

Raj frames enterprise AI confusion as an information distillation and routing problem. A large unindexed dump may contain relevant facts, but it can also include obsolete, conflicting or irrelevant material. MVC therefore treats context selection as a separate engineering task: identify what applies to the query, establish which sources should govern, and pass a concise evidence set to the model.
What Minimum Viable Context means
Raj’s design law is: “Feed the absolute minimum number of tokens required to complete the objective with mathematical certainty.” This is the author’s formulation, not an established engineering law. In practical terms, MVC means aiming for the fewest, most accurate tokens that still let the model answer the question—with a way to acknowledge when the available evidence is insufficient.
#1 Best Overall
The proposal’s four stages are best understood as linked controls. Metadata helps decide what remains eligible; structured relationships can expose connections; retrieval finds possible evidence; reranking prioritizes it; and synthesis turns the selected material into a model-ready context. Each stage depends on the quality of the underlying documents and the rules governing them.
How the proposed pipeline works
1. Attach validity and authority metadata
At ingestion, record more than a text chunk and its identifier. Raj’s example includes validity dates, authority level and document status. A retrieval system can use those fields to exclude expired or lower-authority material before presenting candidates to a model.
Rank #2
This control is only as useful as the policy behind it. Teams must define what “authoritative” means for each information domain, how conflicting sources are resolved, and what happens when validity dates or status are missing. The sample travel allowance and dates in Raj’s code are illustrative data, not a real policy or statistic.
2. Represent relationships where they matter
For questions involving organizational structure or other explicit relationships, Raj proposes representing entities, relationships and hierarchies in a knowledge graph. Rather than relying only on passages that happen to mention related terms, a system can traverse the modeled links. The article names Neo4j as an example tool.
Rank #3
A graph is not automatically better than text retrieval: relationships have to be identified, maintained and kept current. Raj’s article does not report a benchmark comparing graph traversal with flat retrieval, so the case for this stage is strongest when a workload depends on relationships that are difficult to recover reliably from isolated passages.
3. Retrieve broadly, then rerank
The proposed retrieval pattern uses vector search to produce a broad set of candidate passages, followed by a cross-encoder that scores how relevant each candidate is to the particular query. Raj gives Cohere Rerank and BGE-Reranker as examples. The article’s top-20-to-top-3 illustration describes the intended narrowing, not a measured evaluation.
Rank #4
Reranking adds another processing step and does not correct inaccurate source material or weak authority rules. Its usefulness should be judged against the actual workload, including answer quality and operational constraints; the article reports no measured accuracy, latency or cost results for its example pipeline.

4. Synthesize a concise, bounded context
After filtering and ranking, the system can assemble selected chunks into a compact prompt. Raj’s example instructs the model to answer from the supplied context and state when the data is insufficient. The article also sketches version handling and expiry checks in Python.
Best Value
These are illustrative patterns, not a tested production implementation. A production system still needs to ensure that the selected material supports the answer, that version and expiry logic reflect real policy, and that the model does not present unsupported details as fact.

MVC is a useful design lens when an organization has many sources but only a subset should govern a given answer. It is not a universal architecture prescription. Fit depends on the query workload, source quality, update frequency, governance requirements and operating constraints.
- Check source governance: Can you define authority levels, document status and validity periods in ways your team can consistently apply?
- Check the query type: Do important questions depend on explicit hierarchies or relationships that a graph could represent?
- Check retrieval quality: Does a broad candidate search find relevant evidence, and does reranking improve selection for your own queries?
- Check failure handling: Can the system detect missing, stale or conflicting evidence and return an appropriately limited answer?
- Measure the trade-offs: Evaluate answer quality alongside latency, cost and maintenance burden before adopting the pipeline.
The proposal’s central distinction remains useful: retaining and integrating large volumes of data is not the same problem as selecting trustworthy context for a specific answer. Its stages offer a way to reason about that selection, while their value in a particular deployment must be established on that deployment’s data and queries.
