Dengue Vaccines and Prevention: Who May Be Eligible?

Dengue vaccine eligibility depends on the vaccine, age, prior infection, local transmission and national rules. Here is what CDC and WHO guidance says, plus practical bite-prevention steps.

Dengue vaccine eligibility depends on the vaccine, age, prior dengue infection, local transmission and the rules where you live. In the United States, CDC says no dengue vaccine is currently available; its former Dengvaxia recommendation was limited to certain children with laboratory-confirmed previous infection living in specified endemic jurisdictions. WHO recommends Qdenga for children aged 6–16 in settings with high dengue transmission, but national authorization and access vary. For U.S. travelers, CDC does not recommend dengue vaccination. Mosquito-bite prevention remains important whether or not a vaccine is available to you.

Eligibility at a glance

Vaccine and guidance Who the recommendation covers Key condition Availability or status
Dengvaxia, CDC recommendation in the United States Children aged 9–16 Laboratory-confirmed prior dengue infection and residence in a specified U.S. dengue-endemic jurisdiction Discontinued and no longer available in the United States, according to CDC
Qdenga (TAK-003), WHO recommendation Children aged 6–16 in settings with high dengue transmission intensity Eligibility is a public-health decision based on transmission in the setting, not simply a child’s individual travel history Authorized in more than 40 countries according to CDC; authorization and supply differ by country, and it is not available or recommended in the United States
Dengue vaccination for U.S. travelers No dengue vaccine is currently recommended by CDC for travelers WHO describes a possible benefit from TAK-003 for some travelers who previously had dengue, but this is not a blanket travel recommendation Check local rules and consult a health professional; use bite prevention

The table reflects CDC and WHO guidance summarized on pages updated in 2025 and 2026. A recommendation, a regulator’s product indication and a vaccine actually available to receive are different things.

What applied to Dengvaxia in the United States?

CDC’s former recommendation was narrow

CDC recommended Dengvaxia for children aged 9–16 who had laboratory-confirmed previous dengue infection and lived in an area where dengue is endemic. The named jurisdictions were American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Palau. It was not recommended for U.S. travelers visiting dengue-endemic areas.

FDA labeling and CDC’s recommendation used different age ranges

FDA’s product indication listed people aged 6 through 16 with laboratory-confirmed previous infection living in endemic areas. CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendation was narrower: ages 9–16. An FDA indication does not mean public-health authorities recommend use across that entire age range. In any case, CDC reports that Dengvaxia was discontinued after the manufacturer announced the decision in 2024 because of lack of global demand, and it is no longer available in the United States.

Why proof of previous infection mattered

Dengvaxia can increase the risk of severe dengue and hospitalization when given to someone before their first dengue infection. That is why the U.S. recommendation required laboratory confirmation of past infection rather than relying on a person’s recollection of a prior illness. CDC’s 2025 Yellow Book says serologic tests used for Dengvaxia eligibility should have at least 75% sensitivity and at least 98% specificity. Those are criteria for test performance in that guidance, not an endorsement of a consumer test or a reason to self-diagnose.

Who may be eligible for Qdenga under WHO guidance?

Routine program recommendation: children aged 6–16 in high-transmission settings

WHO recommends Qdenga (TAK-003) for children aged 6–16 where dengue transmission intensity is high. The recommended course is two injections at least three months apart. The recommendation is intended for settings with substantial transmission; it is not a universal recommendation for every child living in or traveling to a country where dengue occurs.

How high transmission intensity may be identified

WHO says countries can assess transmission using age-specific seroprevalence and dengue hospital admissions. Its 2025 indicators include more than 60% seroprevalence by age 9, or a mean age of peak dengue-associated hospitalizations below 16 years. These are programmatic indicators for deciding whether a setting meets the high-transmission threshold, not tests that determine an individual child’s eligibility.

Why WHO does not recommend routine use in lower-transmission settings

WHO does not recommend programmatic use in low-to-moderate transmission settings while the efficacy–risk profile against DENV3 and DENV4 in people who have never had dengue needs further assessment. In settings with less transmission, the balance of potential benefit and risk may differ from that in high-transmission areas.

Possible consideration for some people with comorbidities

WHO says an endemic country could consider vaccination outside the routine 6–16 age range for certain people with comorbidities if there is documented substantial country-specific severe-dengue burden. Pending more data, WHO describes lower and upper age limits of 6 and 60 for this consideration. This is not a general adult eligibility recommendation; the country’s policy and product label determine whether it applies.

Situations that may rule out Qdenga

WHO’s Q&A lists pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain immune deficiencies or immunosuppressive therapies, and some HIV-related conditions as reasons not to administer TAK-003. The exact contraindications and precautions depend on the product label and national rules, so a clinician should check the label applicable where vaccination is being considered.

What should travelers know?

There is no CDC-recommended dengue vaccine for U.S. travelers

CDC does not currently recommend dengue vaccination for U.S. travelers. WHO notes that people who live in non-endemic countries and previously had any of the four dengue serotypes after travel to an endemic country may benefit from TAK-003 before traveling again to an endemic country. WHO says benefits are lower for travelers who have never had dengue and advises discussing the decision with a health provider. This conditional statement should not be treated as a general recommendation to vaccinate travelers.

Verify access in the destination or home country

CDC reports that Qdenga has been authorized in more than 40 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia and Thailand. That does not establish current supply or the exact eligibility rules in any one country. Check the national regulator or public-health authority and the current product label before making plans around vaccination.

How to reduce dengue risk without relying on a vaccine

CDC identifies protection from mosquito bites as the best way to prevent dengue. A vaccine does not prevent every case: WHO states that TAK-003 does not prevent all dengue infections. Prevention measures can address bites outdoors, mosquitoes indoors and breeding sites around the home.

Protect yourself from bites

  • Use an EPA-registered insect repellent according to its label.
  • Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants where practical.
  • Reduce mosquitoes around the home, including by addressing places where they can breed.

Reduce mosquito exposure indoors and while traveling

  • Choose lodging with screened windows and doors or air conditioning when possible.
  • Use a bed net if sleeping outdoors or if screened or air-conditioned space is unavailable.
  • Follow local public-health and travel-health advice for the area you visit.

After returning from an area with dengue risk

CDC advises travelers to continue bite-prevention steps for three weeks after returning, even if they feel well. This can help prevent mosquitoes from biting an infected traveler and transmitting dengue to other people.

How to make a practical eligibility decision

  1. Identify the vaccine and location. Determine whether the question concerns Dengvaxia under historical U.S. CDC guidance, Qdenga under WHO or a country’s policy, or a travel-health decision.
  2. Check the current local rules. Confirm the current regulator-approved product label, public-health recommendation and actual availability with the relevant national health authority. Authorization alone does not establish supply or individual eligibility.
  3. Confirm the clinical factors. Check age, evidence of prior infection where required, local transmission criteria, comorbidities and contraindications with a qualified health professional.
  4. Keep bite prevention in place. Use appropriate repellent and environmental measures regardless of vaccination status.

Other vaccine results are not eligibility guidance

CDC reported preliminary Phase 3 Brazil trial results for TV003/Butantan-DV showing efficacy against virologically confirmed dengue after 3.7 years of 77% among seropositive participants and 60% among seronegative participants. These preliminary trial findings are not Qdenga results, do not predict an individual’s protection and do not by themselves establish who can receive a vaccine or where it is available.
