Dell Pro 7 Keyboard Not Connecting? Fix Bluetooth and USB Receiver Problems

A Dell Pro 7 KB726 may seem disconnected when it is set to the wrong mode. Use these steps to troubleshoot its USB receiver or Bluetooth connection.

If your Dell Pro 7 keyboard will not connect, first check its power and connection mode: KB726 can connect either through the bundled USB-A receiver or Bluetooth, and it must be set to the path you want to use. Confirm the model printed on the keyboard or box before following these steps—Dell also uses “Pro 7” for other keyboards, including KB746.

Confirm your keyboard model and connection method

The steps below are for the Dell Pro 7 Slim Keyboard KB726, which is included in the KM726 keyboard-and-mouse set. Dell lists Bluetooth 6.0 and a Dell Secure Link USB-A receiver as its connection options. The KB726 supports up to three device connections: two Bluetooth connections and one receiver connection. These are separate saved connections; select the matching mode or Bluetooth channel to use the intended device. See Dell’s KM726 product listing for the product details.

Use the receiver if it is available and your computer has USB-A; choose Bluetooth if the receiver is unavailable or you want to use a Bluetooth slot. The receiver uses a USB port, while Bluetooth requires pairing and selecting the correct saved channel.

Check power and mode first

  1. Check that the keyboard’s two AAA batteries are installed with the correct polarity. Replace them if they are depleted.
  2. Turn the keyboard off, then back on.
  3. Select the connection mode that matches your computer: USB receiver or the Bluetooth channel paired with that computer. A keyboard may appear disconnected simply because it is set to another saved device or mode.

Fix a USB receiver connection

  1. Find the Dell Secure Link receiver. In the KM726 set, the receiver is shared by the keyboard and mouse and is stored in the mouse, according to the KM726 guide.
  2. Connect the receiver directly to the computer, rather than through a USB hub or port replicator while troubleshooting.
  3. Select USB mode on the keyboard. If the mouse is also not connecting, select USB mode on it as well.
  4. If the keyboard still does not connect, try another USB port and keep the keyboard within the guide’s stated 10-meter range while testing.
  5. If the keyboard or mouse may have been unpaired, use Dell Display and Peripheral Manager to initiate pairing again.

If the bundled receiver is lost or appears defective, do not assume a generic receiver will work. Ask Dell support to verify a compatible replacement part for KB726.

Fix Bluetooth pairing

  1. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in the computer’s settings.
  2. Select an available Bluetooth channel on the keyboard and use its connection-mode control to start pairing. Dell’s KM726 setup materials describe holding the connection-mode control for about three seconds to begin pairing; a blinking channel indicator signals pairing mode.
  3. In the computer’s Bluetooth settings, choose the option to add a device and select Dell KB726. If the computer displays a code, type the digits on the keyboard and press Enter.
  4. If an old pairing for the same device is interfering, remove the inactive Bluetooth entry and try again. Dell’s KM726 guide recommends updating the Bluetooth driver on a Dell computer before pairing.
  5. On Windows, Swift Pair can be used if enabled. Turn on “Show notifications to connect using Swift Pair” in Windows Bluetooth settings first. If no Swift Pair prompt appears, use the manual Add device flow instead.

Dell’s setup video covers receiver setup, switching modes, and both Swift Pair and manual Bluetooth pairing: KM726 setup guide.

When basic checks do not help

As general wireless checks—not KB726-specific diagnosis—try toggling the computer’s Bluetooth off and on, restarting the computer, and testing away from nearby Wi-Fi equipment or USB 3.0 devices that could cause interference. Dell describes these steps in its guide for a different model, the KB900, so its model-specific instructions and receiver-distance advice should not be treated as KB726 requirements.
