Dell PowerStore Alternatives for Enterprise Data Center Storage

A workload-first guide to enterprise alternatives to Dell PowerStore, with vendor positioning, published claims, and a like-for-like RFP checklist.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strongest alternatives to Dell PowerStore to evaluate are Everpure FlashArray, NetApp AFF, HPE Alletra, IBM FlashSystem, Hitachi Vantara VSP, and Huawei OceanStor Dorado. They are candidates, not automatic equivalents: the right choice depends on the workloads, protocols, capacity, resilience, and operating model your data center requires.

Which storage platforms belong on a PowerStore shortlist?

Gartner’s 2026 Enterprise Storage Platforms abstract defines the category as platforms providing file, block, and object services for structured and unstructured workloads, and names Dell, Everpure, Hitachi Vantara, HPE, Huawei, IBM, IEIT Systems, and NetApp among the vendors in the market. Gartner Peer Insights separately lists FlashArray, NetApp AFF A-Series, OceanStor Dorado, and HPE Alletra dHCI among PowerStore alternatives. These lists are useful for discovery; neither establishes that products are interchangeable or ranks their performance.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For a first-pass shortlist, compare the six named platforms below against the specific PowerStore configuration and workloads you intend to replace. Treat positioning statements as vendor descriptions, and validate functions and terms against current model documentation and a written proposal.

Platform Published positioning or evidence What to validate for your environment
Everpure FlashArray Listed among PowerStore alternatives by Gartner Peer Insights. Everpure’s comparison brief is vendor-authored and dated September 2023, so it is not a current independent verdict. Current model, required protocols, usable capacity, replication and clustering design, software licensing, support terms, and benchmark conditions.
NetApp AFF A-Series and C-Series NetApp describes A-Series as performance-oriented and C-Series as capacity-optimized. Both run ONTAP; NetApp describes the family as supporting multiple protocols and mixed workloads. Choose the series for the workload and capacity priorities; verify protocols, recovery design, software scope, and performance under your I/O profile.
HPE Alletra Gartner Peer Insights lists Alletra dHCI as an alternative. That listing does not show technical equivalence to a storage array. Identify the exact current Alletra family and model, and clarify whether the proposal is for an array or a disaggregated HCI solution. Confirm support scope.
IBM FlashSystem IBM positions the 5600 for mixed workloads and smaller OLTP databases, the 7600 for larger mixed and OLTP workloads, and the 9600 for consolidated mixed and critical OLTP workloads. Match model and enclosure to the workload. Check host protocols, expansion, data services, licensing, and measured performance under your I/O profile.
Hitachi Vantara VSP One / VSP Hitachi describes VSP One as spanning block, file, object, and mainframe storage. Its comparison page includes VSP E1090 and PowerStore 9200, among other platforms. Distinguish current VSP One offerings from models in older comparisons; confirm supported functions and test conditions in current documentation.
Huawei OceanStor Dorado Listed among PowerStore alternatives by Gartner Peer Insights. Check procurement eligibility, regulatory requirements, regional availability, support arrangements, and technical fit.

Other products that may fit a different role

Gartner Peer Insights also lists Infinidat InfiniBox, NetApp FAS, Synology DS/FS/HD/RS/SA families, and TrueNAS Enterprise. Screen these against the intended role rather than assuming they are equivalent high-end all-flash primary-storage replacements. The right architecture may depend on whether you need a primary array, another storage tier, or a different deployment model.

Define the workload before comparing vendors

Start with a workload inventory, not a feature checklist copied from a vendor presentation. Gartner’s category spans file, block, and object services, but a particular model or configuration may not provide every service you need in the way you need it.

  • Workloads: Identify transaction databases, virtual machines, VDI, containers, file shares, object/S3 use, backup, or mixed consolidation. Record workload criticality and expected growth.
  • Protocols: Specify the required host and client access methods, such as FC, NVMe/FC, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP, NFS, SMB, and object access. Confirm support on the proposed model and configuration.
  • Capacity: Separate raw capacity from usable capacity after protection and system overhead. State data growth, retention, snapshots, and the capacity you need during rebuild or maintenance scenarios.
  • Performance: Define latency targets and the workload’s block size, read/write mix, queue depth, concurrency, and snapshot activity. Peak IOPS alone does not describe application performance.
  • Resilience and recovery: Set recovery-point and recovery-time objectives. Specify replication mode, failover expectations, snapshot retention, isolation requirements, and how recovery will be tested.
  • Operations and support: Account for administrator workflows, existing skills, analytics and automation, escalation terms, upgrade practices, and the support coverage required in your region.

How to read vendor specifications and guarantees

Published maximums, data-reduction ratios, and availability guarantees describe different things and should not be treated as a common benchmark. Preserve each figure’s source, scope, assumptions, and contractual terms when comparing proposals.

Published figure What it means—and what it does not establish
NetApp AFF A-Series: up to 40 million IOPS and 1 TB/s throughput; 99.9999% availability These are claims on NetApp’s product-family page accessed in 2026. They are not a matched benchmark against PowerStore; ask for the configuration, workload conditions, and availability terms behind the figures.
IBM FlashSystem 5600: up to 2.4 PBe effective maximum capacity within one 1U enclosure IBM’s product page accessed in 2026 gives this enclosure-scoped figure. IBM lists different values for other models and separately shows grid-level capacity; do not compare those scopes as if they were the same.
Dell PowerStore Gen 3: 6:1 average data-reduction guarantee Dell’s current product material cites this guarantee in May 2026 terms and says actual application rates vary. It is Dell’s guarantee, not a normalized result against alternatives.
Hitachi VSP One: 100% Data Availability Guarantee and 4:1 Data Reduction Guarantee These are Hitachi vendor guarantee statements. Confirm qualifying products, definitions, exclusions, and contractual terms before assigning them value in a comparison.

For any performance comparison, request a reproducible test using your workload’s block size, read/write mix, queue depth, concurrency, latency target, and data services. Record host connectivity and any vendor tuning. For capacity, show raw and usable figures separately and state data-reduction assumptions; effective capacity depends on the data set and is not a universal outcome.

Hitachi’s comparison page juxtaposes published specifications from multiple vendors, while Dell and Everpure also publish their own competitive material. These can help identify questions, but vendor-authored comparisons are not neutral, independently controlled tests. Gartner’s public abstracts provide a market definition and vendor lists, not a market-wide ranking of performance, price, or market share. Gartner Peer Insights listings and reviews are user-generated platform content, not controlled product testing.

Build a like-for-like RFP

Ask every bidder to respond to the same workload and deployment assumptions. A proposal that uses a different usable-capacity target, reduction assumption, resilience design, or software edition is not directly comparable on headline price or performance.

  1. Describe the workload and access requirements. Include applications, protocols, I/O profile, capacity, growth, and service-level targets.
  2. Require a configuration-specific response. Name the exact model, controllers or nodes, drives, connectivity, software edition, and expansion path. Ask vendors to distinguish standard features from separately licensed options.
  3. Normalize performance and capacity evidence. Require test conditions and results for the same workload profile, and report raw capacity, usable capacity, and any effective-capacity estimate separately.
  4. Specify failure and recovery behavior. Document replication, snapshots, immutability, isolated recovery, failover, and recovery testing against your stated objectives.
  5. Compare lifecycle and operational costs. Request current region-specific quotes, support terms, licensing, migration effort, power and rack requirements, upgrade path, and expected operational labor over the same period.
  6. Plan migration and acceptance. Define data-migration responsibilities, downtime limits, rollback criteria, application validation, and acceptance tests before selecting a replacement.

The public vendor and analyst material reviewed for this comparison does not establish a neutral current total-cost-of-ownership ranking, regional street prices, independent matched benchmarks, or exact model-to-model equivalents. Use current, configuration-specific proposals and your own acceptance criteria to make the final decision.
